inhumane treatment towards poultry animals can lead to food-borne diseases in manufactured meat? I like meat but what can I do to help fight against abuse of poultry animals in factories? I'm not a vegan, vegetarian, nor extreme animal activist. I eat meat, and I want to continue eating it. But how can I help prevent poultry abuse at slaughtering plants, prior to being slaughtered? Effects of discomfort in birds and feeding them antibiotics prior to slaughtering can lead to food-borne diseases and salmonella which affect consumers directly. any suggestions? 10 pts
Black tongue in poultry what is your opinion? Poultry these days seem to suffer more disease's than thought and some not cured like other disease's .What your opinion on poultry disease's and black tongue that affects poultry.
What poultry disease could this be? I found mass amounts of chickens in three houses, the majority of them lying face down and in small groups. I've never seen this before so it causes me to believe its some sort of poultry disease. Its not much information but its all i have at this point in the grow out.
Is it safe for rabbits and poultry to live by each other? At our fair poultry and rabbits are having to live extremely close together. What I'm trying to find out is if it is safe? Are there any diseases that can be transferred? Is this situation at all compromising their health? Thanks in advance.

What do you think Illegal immigrants bring diseases into States ? As our nation slowly is overrun by illegal immigrants, we must realize there are not just societal and economic issues, but medical concerns as well. It has become second nature for people to sit back and make justifications for allowing illegal immigration. However, unless they acknowledge the consequences they are not likely to understand its full implications. Investor's Business Daily reported on Aug. 29, that Francisco Santos, an illegal immigrant, was arrested at Gwinnett Medical Center on Aug. 24 when he refused treatment for an active case of contagious tuberculosis and threatened to leave the hospital and return to Mexico. Santos will get his wish when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents deport him back home to receive medical help there, instead of taxing our services. Unfortunately, cases like Santos' are not random occurrences. A tuberculosis outbreak involving 131 immigrants occurred at a South Carolina poultry plant just a few weeks ago. According to webmd.com, tuberculosis is a highly contagious viral infection spread through air particles by an infected person when he or she sneezes, coughs or spits. Frontpagemagazine.com reported Aug. 17, "It is estimated that each person infected with TB will infect 10 others." This is a huge biological threat to the citizens of the United States. New strains of tuberculosis that are resistant to drug treatment have developed, and research by the Indiana University of Medicine affirmed it was introduced into the United States by Mexican Nationals. http://media.www.kstatecollegian.com/media/storage/paper1022/news/2007/09/11/Opinion/Illegal.Immigrants.Bring.Diseases.Into.States-2960741.shtml
Avian Influenza and treatment towards poultry plague's .Is the answer Vaccines from insects and plant matter.? There are many different diseases in poultry from avian encephalomyelitis to ascites and these many disease's have to be addressed to provide good meats and layer production in poultry today .Do you think that a large range of world lands with poultry placed on the land consuming different plant matter and insect groups to combat disease should be tested as different bacteria's in soils as well play a large part in the health of poultry .Some species of bird in the amazon eat clay or soil for gut health .Can mineral testing on commercial poultry be tested to improve flock health?.
Protecting the Australian meat industry from imported meats? There is a number of diseases that cattle carry and australia is free of disease but by importing meats from other countries with introduce these diseases .The Australian government cannot allow imports or regulations on imports to change as disease control in cattle and poultry is a main factor.
i am concerned about animal protein and meat as part of my diet? firstly; how much protein does my body require on a daily basis? and does exercise contribute to the amount i should be consuming. i think that usually 3 proportions a day is adequate enough for a female (20 something, 5feet7 and 8stones) and this wouldnt change as i get older? should i be consuming less red meat than poultry or seafood, and why is this? farming?... diseases in animals; ie: blue tongue etc. a huge concern is animal hormones. What are the existing and long term effects this can have over my health? is organic produce a better option, how much better and why? finally, vegetarian protein. how much vegetarian protein should i be consuming compared to protein from meat, and why? is being a vegetarian a good idea. if so, than how will it benefit my health? vegetarians: can i have some insight regarding your dietry lifestyle and beliefs. no, the point is i am asking. questions.

Is foul smelling breath symptom of histoplasmosis and psittacosis ? My husband worked in a poultry house as a teen, he started feeling really sick about a year ago. His breath is just foul, it smells like chicken poop? It stinks real bad. I found these two diseases that fall under farmers disease. he cleaned chicken houses out so he was exposed to many gases and chicken droppings. Please only answer if my question if you a competent person with a real answer. Thanks
'Feral ring neck dove problem? What should I do about them trying to join my caged ringnecks.I'm worried about poultry diseases and consiter killing them but my wife would kill me if I did!
How does one keep track of mutants on yahoo board? Ok guys. We saw it all in movies, mutants that change their features according to their will. We saw how a particular virus created SARS by mutation and now we see the same thing over here in China section of yahoo answers. The first victim was "Mr Hex Vision" and now another one "Say No to 50 cents party". Have you any antivirus to cure the disease. You remember what havoc did SARS create to the poultry industry?
Have you heard of Narasin and Monensin, two horses dead, learn from my horrible experience? Narasin is added to poultry food to help prevent disease in intensive production, Monensin is also used for this, as well as in catle feed as a growth promotor. If you read the label it will tell you that it is toxic to horses, but did you know a few mouthfuls is all it will take? We lost 2 horses this week, and the necropsy showed that they had been poisoned by one of these agents. We were originally looking for medicated cattle feed as we keep cows and that was assumed to be the cause, the fact that we've never had it on the farm was confusing. Eventually we found a very small bag, less than 1/2 lb, with the remains of some poultry starter food in it. It been brought home by my son when he rescued 3 chickens. We still don't know how it got from the barn to the paddock, but I so wish that we had got rid of it. If you want to know more check out the following: http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/english/livestock/horses/news/jun06.htm http://www.alpharma.com/newahd/pages/getfile.aspx?id=AC1C899A-8030-4AF0-BC0A-78CD0BB49061
Questions about using a Hazmat-type coverall suit to avoid transmitting diseases between separate animal cages? I have several coops/shelters/runs in my backyard for poultry and game birds as well as a brooder with chicks in my house. In the last 3 weeks there have been several unexplained deaths amongst each group of birds as well as strange health problems and I'm worried that the reason may be some airborne disease or bacteria that I've been unknowingly spreading from the infected group to the next when I go from one coop to another coop to feed them. If that was the case, would wearing a Hazmat-type coverall suit help any in preventing this? I know that sounds extreme but I'm sick of watching my birds die as well as showering and changing clothes every 15 minutes just to go from one coop to the next. It would be a lot easier if I just had something I could put on over my clothes when I go into each coop instead. I would buy several of them (the cheap $5 kind), one for each coop, so I wouldn't transfer anything from one coop to the next. But would this be effective? Or would it transmit anyway if that's what the problem really is?
Where can I buy edible bugs in mass quantities? I'm doing a thesis on the potential for bugs to become a substitute for meat (beef, pork) while providing numerous benefits (leaner, healthier, etc). To do this I need to go through a month in which I substitute bugs where I would otherwise eat beef/pork/poultry. Is there a website I could order from that's relatively inexpensive? Also please don't suggest that I go outside to find bugs. Part of this assignment involves the necessity for bug farms to raise insects without disease. Thanks!
Does the US Humane Society have an opinion about Pokeballs? The EU will soon ratify a law that will ban poultry battery farms by 2013 because cooping chickens in a tiny space is inhumane and can spread disease like H5N1 Avian flu. With that in mind, do you believe that Pokeballs are equally as inhumane and apt for the spread pokemon-borne disease?
I splattered myself with raw chicken in the eye tonight. Will I get salmonella? Really worried. Whilst trying to pull apart raw whole chicken from the string, the juice spluttered up and hit me in the eye. Am always so good about disinfecting the surfaces after preparing poultry so I was mortified that the raw meat got into my own eyeball, and worst still felt there was nothing I could do to rectify the situation. So what are my chances of getting salmonella and in future how much raw meat / cross contamination exposure do you need to give you the disease?
Baby poultry question please help? I have recived my baby chicks from the hatchery and they heave been doing good for the two weeks i have had them. Now recently I have noticed a large growth on their necks and it appears to be full of chick starter. It is like this on all the chicks. I have never seen this before and the hatchery is replacing my order. I had them vaccinated for meariks disease and if this was done incorectly could the food be getting cought up inside their throat? Has anyone ever seen this? Or does anyone have any sugesstions?
Working on a Poultry Farm? Well I would like to first ask you if you have had any experience working on a Poultry Farm.... Is it hard...is there any chance i might catch any kind of disease? Do you think I will throw up every time I eat chicken? I have had 0 experience...do you think I should apply to work there. Second Part...I am taking a break from college to figure out what I want to do...save some money...and not waste anymore of my parents money...Do you think this is a good idea? I would like to find a job that requires using my hand...somewhere they pay you as well give you room and board. I am probably going to take a year off...What do you guys think?
Why isn't poultry banned by Judaism/Islam if health is the reason for banning them? And why not ban all meat? No meat is without its problems, and it seems that far more people get food poisoning from chicken than from pork. Whether this is true or not, badly cooked chicken can make you very very ill. Why hasn't Islam banned chickens? Also, many human diseases originate from birds, all forms of human influenza originate from bird forms. Bird flu is currently a concern for some Muslim countries, Indonesia, for example. People in these countries would be keeping chickens in very similar conditions to the early Islamic days. You can't blame modern farming for this. Why are pigs singled out, surely if avoiding diseases is the prime motivation for religious proscription, vegetarianism would be enforced, like it is in some religions. Donner kebabs, which are Turkish in origin and are theoretically acceptable for Muslim consumption, are one of the least healthy talkaway foods you can get in the UK both in terms of the quality of the food and the diseases they contain. Why doesn't Islam or Judaism ban all meat? And why doesn't Islam ban prawns/shrimp in the same unambiguous way that it bans pork? Plenty of nasty bugs in that seafood and plenty of confusion about whether they can be eaten or not. This doesn't explain why Donner Kebabs are one of the worst possible things that you can eat. They are usually Halal, but that by no means makes them healthy; the meat is terrible, full of fact and heavily laden with microbes. Allah overlooked this one.
What do I feed my sick puppy? We just recently found out that my puppy doesn't have Parvo. He has similar disease called Corona virus. It's not as deadly so that's such a relief. The vet is treating it according, but he didn't tell me what types of food would be good for a puppy with this disease. I know not to give him poultry. But what else can I give him to keep him for get too skinny and malnourished.
Can my Pekin duck catch Trichomoniasis/Trounce disease from a chicken? I recently kept a neighbor's chicken in a cage that I use for my adult Pekin duck. The chicken is no longer in the cage. I found out very recently that the chicken had a severe case of Trichomoniasis poultry disease and sadly it may die because it's had it for a while now. I did a thorough scrubbing down and cleaning of the cage and surrounding area after I found out, and I threw away the food containers. I read that this disease spreads mostly through saliva and it can be deadly to birds. My sister discovered growths in the chicken's mouth and she said it had difficulty swallowing which are typical symptoms of the disease. I fed the rooster using the same plate I feed my duck on. My duck may have fed on the plate after the chicken did before I found out the chicken had a disease. I'm concerned that my duck could have caught the disease also. Is this a disease that is mostly confined to chickens, or can it be passed to ducks also, particularly to Pekin ducks? Please no links to google or other websites. I have four hens who did not come into contact with the strange chicken. Also, if my duck potentially caught the virus but shows no active signs that she has the diease, could she still pass it on to my hens if she shares food or water with them? Kind of like being immune to a disease but still being able to pass it on to someone else if you came into contact with it. Serious answers please, such as from veterinary students or veterinarians. Or someone who knows a lot about backyard birds and poultry/bird biology. Thanks.
Can you name some reasons to go vegetarian? ONE HUNDRED & ONE REASONS TO GO VEGETARIAN People Land Air Water Efficiency Animals Health PEOPLE Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain - enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain) If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India) Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands - eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain - this is continuing today People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday The UK imports £46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation 1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink LAND If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left 1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes 8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares) It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion 6billion tons/year in the USA If everyone went vegetarian upto 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc. 25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960 Between 1966-1983 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing 90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming AIR The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming) Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher) Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide - thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter - CFCs are destroy the ozone layer Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air WATER 25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat 18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow EFFICIENCY To produce 1calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient) Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc 1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!) If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer - the price would be quadrupled (at least) The EC spends œ100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000 Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals 70% of all grain is fed to animals Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford ANIMALS Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally) Chickens are crammed into battery cages with upto 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in - this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors - they can not even turn around Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square - fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water - resulting in stress, injuries & deaths - legal requirements are widely ignored 95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious 4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep - the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf - so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking - their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water - all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt - this is factory farming "Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind" - John Stewart Mill (philosopher) Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood , chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers) Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves - under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day - resulting in swollen & inflamed udders - at this rate they are soon worn out Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals - these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species. HEALTH Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often) Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre - exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths) Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones 80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh - most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine - the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones 50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy) AND I COULD GO ON ! If you've read this far, I hope that you are beginning to see that the Meat & Dairy industry is a major contributor to misery on this planet. It is destroying the health of people in rich countries, starving those in poor countries, it is torturing & killing billions of animals every year and in the meantime it is one of the major factors in the destruction of the environment - so what does the meat & dairy industry have to say in it's defence? Well their only real point is usually "Meat is tasty" - fair enough a lot of people enjoy the taste of meat - but there are plenty of delicious alternatives (just consider the huge range of vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking - one of the oldest & most sophisticated cuisines in the world) and if you really crave meat & dairy, nowadays there are plenty of healthy non animal alternatives - just look in the supermarket & health food shop. So I hope you will agree it's pretty pathetic to consider all the evidence & then say "well I know you're right about the environment & health & the animals - but I just love my meat" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: ARC is @nti-copyright throughout - Copy and distribute any part as you wish. Are most poultry infections & outbreaks of H1N1 in chickens due to migratory birds? Migratory birds travel over long distances, helping to spread diseases like avian flu around the world rapidly. Besides, they are infecting poultry reared in farms , completely disregarding national boundaries and flying wherever they want. They are the cause of most poultry infections. Are they pests in this regard, just like rats and cockroaches?
Would you put that package in your shopping cart or order that particular entree from the menu? Imagine this: you’re looking at a package of chicken in the meat/poultry section of your local grocery store (or considering ordering the grilled chicken entree on the menu at a local restuarant) and you see a label reading: This chicken was processed by illegal aliens being paid sub-standard wages and without health benefits in order to bring you, the consumer, the best possible value for your food dollar! Would you put that package in your shopping cart or order that particular entree from the menu? Truth be known, and this needs saying, the Koch employees may have been earning sub-standard wages at that Ohio chicken processing plant, but they most certainly were nonetheless enjoying healthcare and many other benefits that millions of Americans do not share in. How is that, you ask? You provide them! For, in point of fact, illegal aliens regularly leverage a vast social safety net of taxpayer-subsidized services, from healthcare to education to food stamps to housing to Medicaid (and on and on it goes). Still skeptical? Well, then, read the following from American Chronicle: Illegals can’t live on illegal pay reported without government subsidies. … illegal immigrants drawn by greed and treasonous wartime profiteering only come here for: Illegal government handouts (provided without determining legal status, identification, residency or need) for: local health department care, emergency health care, prenatal care, catastrophic disease care, tuition, education, food, subsidized housing, public transportation, Medicaid, WIC, food stamps and numerous other social stipends, provide financial incentive to come to this country. And square that reality with the fact that poorly educated, unskilled, low-wage, illegal alien laborers performing marginal jobs in this country were nevertheless able to send $45 billion back to their countries of origin in 2006. From whose pockets do you think that kind of money came from, Folks? They sure didn’t get it from cutting up chicken parts for $8.00 an hour.
Can the bird flu virus H5N1 virus be destroyed and killed by high temperatures like frying, or roasted? If cooking poultry (chickens, ducks etc) like that can kill the virus, why are governments in countries affected by that disease need to cull millions of chickens and ducks world-wide? They can easily sell them off and advise consumers to cook them thoroughly well before eating them.Inspite of offering free chickens, yet consumers are still unwilling to take the risk to buy them. Is it because, they are afraid unscrupulous traders may sell sick chickens to ignorant vendors whom in return sell them to consumers like us? If we happen to touch and clean up sick chickens with that virus, will we be infected by that virus? If so, then that could be the reason for the poor sale of chickens in countires affected.
Rooster's legs tremble and looses balance? My children have a flock of Araucana Chickens (because they lay pretty colored eggs) and I've noticed that the Rooster has recently started walking funny... he usually struts all over the yard ruling over his hens, but lately I notice he stays behind, and when he attempts to walk his legs tremble and he looses balance then falls to the ground. I've been searching online and according to an online poultry disease website I found it says that it's either botulism or Marek's disease. Both have similar symptoms listed (trembling legs, paralysis, etc.) only there is one symptom not listed on either.... Without much effort I noticed his tail feathers come off... he's not moulting so I know it's not that. I've checked them all for lice/mites, and there is nothing. My kids normally eat their eggs, and I've stopped gathering the eggs until I know for sure what is going on. I've also isolated him from his hens until I have a more definative diagnosis. what are good alternative proteins? My mother is alergic to unable to eat most main protein sources including eggs dairy and a lot of meats due to a disease. She can have fish and poultry and some meats like bison/elk but Im looking for other sources of protein for her. Yes she is working with a RD but the meal plans are not always easy to make or find.
can someone help me write a summary on this science article? i need this for tomorrow and im not soo good at ready so can you helo me please Environmental pollution is the release of environmental contaminants, generally resulting from human activity. Carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles are common air pollutants. Arguably the principal source of air pollutants worldwide is motor vehicle emissions, although many other sources have been found to contribute to the ever growing problem. Principal stationary pollution sources include chemical plants, coal-fired power plants, oil refineries, nuclear waste disposal activity, incinerators, large animal farms, PVC factories, metals production factories, plastics factories, and other heavy industry. Pollutants can cause disease, including cancer, lupus, immune diseases, allergies, and asthma. Adverse air quality can kill many organisms including humans. Motor vehicle emissions are one of the leading causes of air pollution. Principal stationary pollution sources include chemical plants, coal-fired power plants, oil refineries, petrochemical plants, nuclear waste disposal activity, incinerators, large livestock farms (dairy cows, pigs, poultry, etc.), PVC factories, metals production factories, plastics factories, and other heavy industry. Some of the more common soil contaminants are chlorinated hydrocarbons (CFH), heavy metals (such as chromium, cadmium--found in rechargeable batteries, and lead -- found in lead paint, aviation fuel and still in some countries, gasoline), MTBE, zinc, arsenic and benzene. Ordinary municipal landfills are the source of many chemical substances entering the soil environment (and often groundwater), emanating from the wide variety of refuse accepted, especially substances illegally discarded there, or from pre-1970 landfills that may have been subject to little control in the U.S. or EU. Pollution can also be the consequence of a natural disaster. For example, hurricanes often involve water contamination from sewage, and petrochemical spills from ruptured boats or automobiles. Larger scale and environmental damage is not uncommon when coastal oil rigs or refineries are involved. Some sources of pollution, such as nuclear power plants or oil tankers, can produce widespread and potentially hazardous releases when accidents occur. Adverse air quality can kill many organisms including humans. Ozone pollution can cause respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, throat inflammation, chest pain, and congestion. Water pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per day, mostly due to contamination of drinking water by untreated sewage in developing countries. Oil spills can cause skin irritations and rashes. Noise pollution induces hearing loss, high blood pressure, stress, and sleep disturbance..
Which one of these is correct? The cells of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (a micro-organism which causes chronic respiratory disease in poultry) resemble animal cells more than plant cells. A) The cells contain ribosomes B) The cells have a flexible cell membrane but no rigid cell wall C) Enzymes necessary for respiration but none of those necessary for photosynthesis have been isolated from the cell. and D) The DNA is not contained within a nuclear membrane.
Eat your meat, is this true? 1. Abscesses and digestive organs are punctured during slaughter, releasing pus, fecal material and ingesta all over carcasses. The law requires that affected meat and poultry be trimmed rather than rinsed. Plants repeatedly skip trimming and merely rinse the meat, which can force bacteria into the porous flesh. Up to 25% of slaughtered chickens on the inspection line are covered with feces, bile and feed. 2. Diseased (cancerous and tuberculoid) animals condemned during ante-mortem inspection are sent to slaughter in violation of the law. 3. Red meat animals and poultry that are dead on arrival or die in the yard while awaiting slaughter are hidden from inspectors doing ante-mortem inspections and hung up to be butchered. Severed heads from "cancer eye" cattle are switched to smaller carcasses, so less meat will be condemned. 4. Chickens and hams are soaked in chlorine baths to remove slime and odor, and red dye is added to beef to make it appear fresh. 5. Rancid meat is smoked to cover foul odor, or marinated and breaded to disguise slime and smell. Blue Sea, are you involved in the Meat and Dairy industry? It sure smells like it... If not, do you have hard cold facts to back up your post? You know you love me here you go http://www.karinya.com/meat.htm
How come? A question about food safety!? According to the CDC ( http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/foodirradiation.htm#whichfoods ) "At higher doses, irradiation could be used on a variety of different foods to eliminate parasites and bacteria that cause foodborne disease. Many foods can be irradiated effectively, including meat, poultry, grains, and many seafoods, fruits and vegetables." They don't mention anything about it not working on Spinach. Perhaps I missed something. Was the process not used or did it not work on the Spinach from California? Have fun but be safe!
What do you think about the "Bird Flu"? First Mad Cow disease, now Bird Flu. Are you avoiding beef or poultry? Do you think now that Mad Cow is undercontroll, more people are eating beef because of the Bird Flu?
What else can you eat if you have GERD (acid reflux disease)? They say I can't eat spicy, tomato sauce, fatty, citrus, etc....but what is left there to eat besides veggies, fruits, and poultry? I don't want to starve myself. Because sometimes it feels that way. My GERD symptoms are somewhat improving, but what else can I eat? Do I need some kind of dietary supplement?
I've just had a thought about bird flu in our food. Can you read this and give your thoughts please?? Right, the food standards agency say "For people, the risk of catching the [bird flu] are from being in close contact with live poultry that have the disease, and not through eating cooked poultry or eggs." But, what about those drinks with raw egg in? I can't remember its name, but there are quite a few. So, is it plausible to think that if I have a drink containing raw egg, then I have an increased chance of catching avian influenza if it entered our shops? Your thoughts please? http://www.food.gov.uk/news/newsarchive/2007/feb/avianflu
i want about bird flue disease? waht i want about this disease is : it's purpose,is there any genetic changes tht have anyresponsibility of this disease,as it can spand through poultry animals could it expand through human themselves, what are the future predecting results about this disease, how many persons till now were killed from it,what is the eceomist predection about the high money damage that is caused by this disease,is it viruse or becterial or genetic disease, when did it first initiate??and where??is the disease has development diagnoses??is there anymedicine tht is discovered for it?? and is there anyway we can use to protect our poultry animals from this disease??????wht are the future bad effects of this disease on the invironment???
Homework Help? I'm doing a take-home test for Zoology and the only question that I'm having trouble with is.. An economically important disease of poultry is a) Trypanosomiasis b) Pebrine c) foul brood d) coccidiosis e) sarcocystitis ...Any help would be great; Thankss!!
Flexitarianism: Can you be a part-time vegetarian? I found this article at http://www.newsweek.com/id/161559/page/1 I've added my thoughts and opinions into the article so when you see UPPERCASE words in (parenthesis), thats me talking. Post your comments about the article For the last 15 years, Dawn Jackson Blatner has been what's now called a "flexitarian" or "almost vegetarian." (CAN YOU SAY OXYMORON?) She eats lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, barbecued tempeh and veggie burgers with guacamole. But she sometimes indulges in a pork chop or her grandma's pot roast. It might seem like being a vegetarian of convenience isn't particularly inspiring, but a growing number of experts and even some famous foodies are fans. They say that cutting back on meat, rather than abstaining completely, may be a practical compromise that benefits our bodies and our environment. "It gives you the health benefits of a vegetarian diet without having to follow the strict rules," (WHY IS IT CONCIDERED STRICKED? YOU CAN EAT JUST BOUT EVERYTHING YOU WANT. EVER HEARD OF MEATLESS MEATS PPL!?!?!) says Blatner, a registered dietitian and author of "The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life" (McGraw-Hill, October 2008). "We know that people live longer and live healthier when they eat vegetarian, but it's just too darn hard to do it 100 percent of the time." Even gourmet food writers, used to nightly courses of filets and pates, are advocating the eat-less-meat movement. In January, Mark Bittman, author of "How to Cook Everything" (Wiley, 1998), is coming out with new book called "Food Matters," (Simon & Schuster) about how our diet affects global warming and "globesity" (global obesity). Bittman has been very critical of what he calls America's "meat guzzling" tendencies. "I am an advocate of what I like to think of as a much saner diet—a largely plant-based diet," he says. A meat-based diet is, he says, "not even close to sustainable." Last year, Bittman published "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian," (Wiley, 2007), though he is not a vegetarian himself. Bittman notes that Americans eat about 200 pounds of meat, poultry and fish a year—twice as much as the global average (YUCK!). He argues that not only is a heavily vegetable diet healthier for us physically, but that it's also true that the industrial production and processing of grain-fed livestock consumes a huge amount energy and has a negative impact on the environment (NEGATIVE IMPACT!!!). It's unclear how many people are official "flexitarian" converts, but nutritionists believe there are a growing number of people who are simply eating fewer meat entrees whether it's for health, or economic reasons or because there are more good meatless dishes on offer. Think how many Americans regularly eat peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, pasta, bean burritos and cheese pizzas as their main courses, says Blatner. "I do feel like that is a shocking thing, when you think about how much vegetarian food we eat without even trying." (THIS IS THE SAME GUY WHO SAID VEGETARIANISM WAS STRICT?!?!) And while only 2 to 3 percent of Americans are traditional vegetarians, who shun anything that ever had a face, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group, vegetarian foods have become increasingly popular among non-vegetarians. "If you look around at every regular, mainstream grocery store, you have soy milk right next to regular milk, you have veggie burgers in the frozen section, and tubs of tofu sitting there in the produce section," says Blatner. She suggests that many of those who buy these products may be flextitarians and not even realize it. Even dedicated vegetarians say they are somewhat flexible. A 2003 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that two out of three vegetarians say they can't stick to a pure veggie diet all the time (DO YOU THINK THIS IS TRUE?). Some vegetarian advocates hope that a movement that begins with eating less meat might lead to more people embracing a no-meat, no-fish and no-fowl lifestyle. Vegetarian Resource Group co-director Charles Stahler, calls it a "step in the right direction." It should also inspire even more restaurants to create veggie options, and more people to realize that it's "easy to be a vegetarian," he says. In fact, it already has become a bit easier for gourmet food lovers to find good meatless entrees. Last year a National Restaurant Association survey found that more than 50 percent of chefs rate vegetarian entries among their top 10 trendiest menu items (I THOUGHT THIS WAS INTERESTING). Still, not everyone agrees that it's a great idea to be mostly vegetarian instead of going whole hog—so to speak. "Given the environmental, cruelty and health impact of a meat-based diet, going vegan is best, going vegetarian is good, and being a flexitarian is like smoking two packs of cigarettes instead of ten, beating one pig down the slaughter ramp instead of two, and pouring a p If you don't care about the article, then I don't bout your response. Mixing Doves With Parrots? Also Wing Clipping/Lorikeet Diet/Training...? For several years I have kept ringneck doves with small parrot species in a large aviary and have not even had a whisper of a problem. Today a bird breeder told me that I should never do that because doves are at high risk of giving parrots diseases due to being poultry. Can someone please tell me your thoughts on this? Thanks. He also told me off because I clip both wings on my lorikeet instead of just one wing and that I am teaching him to "step up" instead of justing saying "up" and also because I don't feed my lorikeet seed as well as the nectar diet, fruit, etc. What the..? :\

The Truth About Commercial Pet Food, by Tina Perry Cow brains. Sheep guts. Chicken heads. Road kill. Rancid grain. These are a few of the so-called nutritionally balanced ingredients found in the commercial pet food served to companion animals every day. More than 95 percent of US companion animals derive their nutritional needs from a single source: processed pet food. When people think of pet food, many envision whole chickens, choice cuts of beef, fresh grains, and all the nutrition that a dog or cat may ever need -- images that pet food manufacturers promote in their advertisements. What these companies do not reveal is that instead of whole chickens they have substituted chicken heads, feet, and intestines. Those choice cuts of beef are really cow brains, tongues, esophagi, fetal tissue dangerously high in hormones, and possibly diseased and even cancerous meat. Those whole grains have had the starch removed for corn starch powder and the oil extracted for corn oil, or they are hulls and other remnants from the milling process. Grains used that are truly whole have usually been deemed unfit for human consumption because of mold, contaminants, poor quality, or poor handling practices. Pet food is one of the world’s most synthetic edible products, containing virtually no whole ingredients. Pet food manufacturers have become masters at inducing companion animals to eat things cat and dogs would normally spurn. Pet food scientists have learned that it's possible to take a mixture of inedible scraps, fortify it with artificial vitamins and minerals, preserve it so that it can sit on the shelf for more than a year, add dyes to make it attractive, and then extrude it into whimsical shapes that appeal to the human consumer. For this, pet food companies can expect to earn $9 billion in sales in 1996. Scraps and Byproducts For years, many care givers have tried to avoid feeding their companion animals people food leftovers, having been warned by veterinarians about the heath problems they can cause. Yet much scrap material from the human food industry is ending up in dogs and cat’s dinner bowls. What the consumer purchases and what the manufacturer advertises are often two entirely different products, and this difference threatens the animals healthy, especially as they age. Learning to read ingredient labels and taking the time to read them carefully is crucial to making an educated choice when purchasing pet food. Ingredients are listed in descending order of weight (heaviest first) under standards established by the Center for Veterinary Medicine for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The name of the product (in most states) is dictated by the regulations of the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). The trouble is, AAFCO standards can lead to deceptive product names due to the weight and volume variations between wet and dry ingredients. Also, the average consumer has no idea what the definitions for the listed ingredients mean. Preservatives, vitamins, minerals, flavorings, and cereal make up most of what the companion animal eats. It is not happenstance that four of the top five major pet food companies in the United States are subsidiaries of major multinational food production companies: Colgate Palmolive (which produces Hills Science Diet), Heinz, Nestle, and Mars )see The Corporate Connection). From a business standpoint, multi-national food companies owning pet food manufacturers is an ideal relationship. The multinationals have captive market in which to dump their waste products, and the pet food manufacturers have a direct source of bulk materials. Both make a profit from selling scraps that originate from places far worse than the dinner table. In his 1986 book Pet Allergies veterinarian Al Plechner sums up what goes into companion animals food: Condemned parts and animals rejected for human consumption are routinely rerouted for commercial pet foods. A similar fate applies to so-called 4-D animals. These are food animals picked up dead, or that are dying, diseased, or disabled, and do not meet human-food qualifications. They are processed straightaway for companion animal consumption. Little goes to waste. Says Plechner, Food processing refuse of all sorts winds up in your animals dinner bowls. Moldy grains. Rancid foods. Meat meal. The latter is ground-up slaughterhouse discards often containing disease-ridden tissue and high levels of hormones and pesticides, the very things that may have contributed to the death of the steer or hog. A decade later, his words still apply. When cattle, swine, chickens, lambs, or other animals meet their ends at a slaughterhouse, the choice cuts -- lean muscle tissue and organs prized by humans -- are trimmed away from the carcass for human consumption. Whatever remains of the carcass (bones, blood, pus, intestines, ligaments, subcutaneous fat, hooves, horns, beaks, and any other parts not normally consumed by humans) is, according to the pet food industry, perfectly fit as a protein source for cat and dog food. The Pet Food Institute, the trade association of pet food manufacturers, acknowledges in its 1994 Fact Sheet the importance of using byproducts in pet foods as additional income for processors and farmers. The purchase and use of these ingredients by the pet food industry not only provides nutritional foods for pets at reasonable costs, but provides an important source of income to American farmers and processors of meat, poultry, and seafood products for human consumption. Many of these remnants are indigestible and provide a questionable source of nutrition. The amount of nutrition provided by meat byproducts, meals, and digests varies from vat to vat of this animal protein soup. A vat filled with chicken feet, beaks, and viscera is going to make available a lower amount of protein than a vat of breast meat. James Morris and Quinton Rogers, professors with Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of California at Davis Veterinary School of Medicine, assert that there is virtually no information on the bio-availability of nutrients for companion animals in many of the common dietary ingredients used in pet foods. These ingredients are generally byproducts of the meat, poultry and fishing industries, with the potential for wide variation in nutrient composition. Claims of nutritional adequacy of pet foods based on the current AAFCO nutrient allowances (profiles) do not give assurances of nutritional adequacy and will not until ingredients are analyzed and bioavailability values are incorporated. Meat byproducts, the catch-all term of the pet food industry, is a misnomer because these byproducts contain little if any meat. Byproducts contain little if any meat. Byproduct are animal parts leftover after the meat has been stripped from the bone. Chicken byproducts include heads, feet, entrails, lungs, spleens, kidneys, brains, livers, stomachs, noses, blood, and intestines free of their contents. What the pet food manufactures fail to mention is that most byproducts, digests and meals are also filled with other substances, such as cancerous tissue cut from the carcass, plastic foam packaging containing spoiled meat from supermarkets, ear tags, spoiled slaughterhouse meat, road kill, and pieces of downer animals. Canned Cannibalism Another source of meat that isn't mentioned on pet food labels is pet byproducts, the bodies of dogs and cats. In 1990 the San Francisco Chronicle reported that euthanized companion animals were found in pet foods. Although pet food company executives and the National Renderers Association vehemently denied the report, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the FDA confirmed the story. The pets serve a viable purpose by providing foodstuff for the animal feed chain, said Lea McGovern, chief of the FDA's animal feed safety branch. Because of the sheer volume of animals rendered and the similarity in protein content between poultry byproducts and processed dogs and cats, rendering plant workers say it would be impossible for purchasers to know the exact contents of what they buy. In fact, Sacramento Rendering cited by inspectors five times in the past two years for product-labeling violations. Grease and Grain The most nutritious dry pet food is no better than the worst if animals will not eat it. Pet food scientists have discovered that spraying the kibble or pellets with a combination of refined animal fat, lard, kitchen grease, and other oils too rancid or deemed inedible for humans makes an otherwise bland or distasteful product palatable. Animal fat is mainly packing house waste or supermarket trimmings from the packaging of meats. Animals love the taste of this sprayed fat, which also acts as a binding agent to which manufacturers may add other flavor enhancers. The pungent odor wafting from an open bag of pet food is created by this concoction. Restaurant grease has become a major component of feed-grade animal fat over the last 15 years. Often held in 50-gallon drums for weeks or months in extreme temperatures, this grease is usually kelp outside with no regard for its safety or further use. The rancid grease is then picked up by fat blenders who mix the animal and vegetable fats together, stabilize them with powerful antioxidants to prevent further spoilage, and then sell the blended products to pet food companies. Rancid, heavily preserved fats are extremely difficult to digest and can lead to a host of animal health problems, including digestive upsets, diarrhea, gas, and bad breath. Once considered filler by the pet food industry, the amount of grain products included in pet food has risen over the last decade as the American population has focused its attention away from consuming beef and toward a healthier diet of grains and vegetables. Commonly two of the top three pet food ingredients are some form of grain products. For instance, Alpo's Beef Flavored Dinner lists ground yellow corn, soybean meal, and poultry byproduct meal as its top three ingredients. 9 Lives Crunchy Meals lists ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, and poultry byproduct meal as its top three ingredients. Of the top four ingredients of Purina's O.N.E. Dog Formula -- chicken, ground yellow corn, ground wheat, and corn gluten meal -- two are corn-based products from the same source. This is an industry practice known as splitting. When components of the same whole ingredient are listed separately (ground yellow corn and corn gluten meal) it appears that there is less corn than chicken, even when the whole ingredient may weigh more than the chicken. Soy is another common ingredient in many pet foods. It is used by the manufacturers to boost the claimed protein content and add bulk so that when animals eat a product containing soy they will fell more sated. Tofu is suitable for humans, but most forms of soybean do not agree with a dog or cat's digestive system. Like many other pet food ingredients, soy is virtually unusable by an animal's body. Being obligate carnivores, cats have little ability to digest any nutrients from soy. The problem is worse for dogs because they lack the essential amino acid to digest soy products. Soy has also been linked to bloat and gas in many dogs. Additives and Processing Pet food industry critics note that many of the ingredients (such as corn syrup and corn gluten meal) used as humectants to prevent oxidation also bind water molecules in such a way that the food actually sticks to the animal's colon and may cause blockage. Blockage of the colon may cause an increased risk of cancer of the colon or rectum. Two-thirds of the pet food manufactured in the United States contains synthetic preservatives added by the manufacturer. Of the remaining third, 90 percent includes ingredients already stabilized by synthetic preservatives. Because most pet food contains large percentages of added fat, a stabilizer is needed to maintain the quality of the food. Sodium nitrite, often used as a coloring agent, fixative, and preservative, has the ability to combine with natural stomach and food chemicals (secondary amends) to create nitrosamines, powerful cancer-causing agents, according to A Consumer's Dictionary of Food Additives. Many pet foods advertised as preservative-free do not contain preservatives. Almost all rendered meats have synthetic preservatives added as stabilizer, but manufacturers aren't required to list preservatives they themselves haven't added. Premixed vitamin additives can also contain preservatives. In the 1003 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, veterinarian Philip Roudebush reported finding low concentrations of synthetic antioxidant preservatives in all analyzed samples of products labeled as chemical free or all-natural. Other types of additives depend on whether the pet food is semi-moist, dry or canned. Because semi-moist food contains 25-50 percent water, antimicrobial preservatives must be used. Propylene glycol was frequently used in cat food until it was pulled in 1992 for causing a variety of health problems. Processing greatly alters the nutritional value of the food ingredients. Veterinarian R. L. Wysong states in Rationale for Animal Nutrition: Processing is the wild card in nutritional value that is, by and large, simply ignored. Heating, freezing, dehydrating, canning, extruding, pelleting, baking and so forth, are so commonplace that they are simply thought of as synonymous with food itself. Because the ingredients that pet food companies use are not wholesome, and harsh manufacturing practices destroy what little nutritional value the food may have had in the first place, the final product must be fortified with vitamins and minerals. Questionable Nutrition How, then, can any pet food be guaranteed to be 100 percent complete or nutritionally adequate? As long as it meets the AAFCO minimum standards, such a guarantee can be on the label. Yet in 1994, feed tests conducted by the New York State Agriculture Department showed 7 percent of all pet foods analyzed failed chemical analyses for guaranteed nutrients. Other states report similar findings, with failure of analyzed feed ranging from to 12 percent. Even if a pet food meets AAFCO standards, certain nutritional requirements (for example, lysine) can vary between species by as much as seven-fold. Although manufacturers clam that millions of companion animals can thrive on a diet consisting of nothing by commercial pet food, research and an increasing number of veterinarians implicate processed pet food as a source of disease or as an exacerbating agent for a number of degenerative diseases. For example, kidney disease is on of the top three killers of companion animals. According to Plechner, the extra protein and harsh ingredients of many pet foods place an overload on the kidneys. Left untreated, the toxic buildup leads to vomiting, loss of appetite, uremic poisoning, and death. Wysong adds, In the last few years, large statistical studies have shown the link between the diet (of processed foods) and a variety of degenerative diseases, including cancer, heart disease, allergies, arthritis, obesity, dental disease, etc. After extensive research, the Animal Protection Institute (API) published a Pet Food Investigative Report to educate companion animal care givers about pet food ingredients, ingredient definitions, labeling, and dietary ailments resulting from processed commercial pet food, including the most commonly know brands. Yet, whether such food is purchased at the supermarket, pet store, or from a veterinarian, it makes little difference in terms of the quality -- only in the cost. Since the report was published earlier this year, API has conducted more research on holistic pet care and pet food alternatives, but still claims that the vast majority of pet foods available on the market today provide less that optimum nutrition for companion animals. It is sad to think that the food provided by animal care givers to their four-legged friends could be hazardous to the animals'; health and longevity. Care givers should assume responsibility for providing as healthful a diet as possible for the animals in the care. Consumers should be informed: speak with a holistic practitioner or herbalist, or consult your veterinarian (but be aware that a veterinarian's knowledge of nutrition may be limited to the two weeks of nutrition he or she had veterinary school 20 years ago). Although the ideal solution would be for companion animals to be fed only wholesome homemade and/or vegetarian diets, this is not an optician for everyone -- the cost and time commitment is sometimes prohibitive. By taking more moderate steps, however, care givers can still greatly improve companion animals' diet and quality of life. EDIT: On Carin Rennings page she lists recommended diets... she really researched them and its really helpful....go check it out..smile EDIT EDIT: sorry but it is still happening to the person that said its not... when I did my research I asked around and found out that the people that picked up the dead pets from the vets offices that did not want a private creamation actually had a company come in and pick the bodies up...really sick...valley protien I think was the name of the company... What do you think of this article?? truth or fiction...? FACTORY FARMED CHICKEN Almost all chicken meat in the United States is produced through the "factory farming" system, in which animals are closely crowded together in filthy, disease-ridden conditions. Because of these unhealthy conditions, many chickens die even before they get to the slaughterhouse. For example, in an operation with 100,000 broiler chickens, approximately 250 birds die per day. Before being caught for the trip to the slaughterhouse, food and water are withdrawn; at the slaughterhouse, birds wait in trucks another 1 to 9 hours to be killed, sometimes in very hot or very cold weather. Chicken is far worse than beef in terms of contamination and bacteria. The Atlanta Constitution reported in 1991: "Every week throughout the South, millions of chickens leaking yellow pus, stained by green feces, contaminated by harmful bacteria, or marred by lung and heart infections, cancerous tumors or skin conditions are shipped to consumers." Salmonella is present in over one-third of all chickens, and many millions of Americans are infected each year. The symptoms of salmonella poisoning are very similar to the flu (though only occasionally fatal), and thus many who are infected may never even be aware of what they have. To prevent these problems, chickens are usually heavily dosed with antibiotics (more than half of all antibiotic use in the U. S. is on factory farms!), but this indiscriminate use of antibiotics in turn helps create resistant strains of salmonella and other disease-causing germs, decreasing the effectiveness of antibiotics to fight human infections. HEART DISEASE, CANCER, AND MEDICAL COSTS And even if bacterial contamination were eliminated, we still have the tremendous problems of heart disease and cancer, the leading causes of death in the United States. Repeated efforts to lower cholesterol levels through switching from beef to chicken have ended in failure. Chicken is somewhat lower in fat than beef, but it still contains quite a bit of fat and even more cholesterol per calorie than does beef or pork. Moreover, meat which is lower in fat is always higher in protein, and excess protein is damaging to health just as is excess fat. Chicken which has 29% of its calories as fat contains 71% of its calories as protein, while ground beef which has 49% of calories of fat has 51% of its calories as protein. In terms of excess protein consumption chicken is worse than beef or pork. Problems caused by or related to excess protein consumption include kidney stones, kidney disease, osteoporosis, bladder cancer, and lymphoma. Chicken meat also completely lacks fiber; lack of fiber is linked to a variety of digestive disorders ranging from constipation to colon cancer. The three basic problems with our American-style diet—too much fat, too much protein, and lack of fiber—are thus all made worse by chicken consumption. Those who switch from beef to chicken are at best trading one set of health hazards for a different set. Chicken has done little for the nation's health. In the past twenty-five years, we have seen a huge increase in poultry consumption; but health care expenditures during the same period showed phenomenal growth, now costing us hundreds of billions of dollars each year in the United States. The "switch" from beef to chicken has evidently had little, if any, effect on rising medical costs. ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS Raising chickens affects the environment as well. Feeding grain to chicken may be somewhat less inefficient than feeding grain to cattle, but it is still wasteful—you must feed at least three times the amount of protein, calories, and other nutrients to the chickens in the form of plant foods than you retrieve in animal flesh at the end. Each year millions of children die due to malnutrition or starvation, and yet the Western countries continue to waste this grain by creating more and more chicken flesh. Moreover, chicken production results in incredible quantities of manure; a one-million hen complex produces 125 tons of wet manure each day. Animal agriculture in the U. S. produces many times more waste products than humans do. In many areas of the country livestock manure causes dangerous contamination of the drinking water due to nitrates. Even when used as a plant fertilizer, chicken manure can cause difficulties, as in Texas several years ago when cantaloupe fertilized with chicken manure caused sickness in human beings. The fault lay not with the cantaloupe but with the disease-ridden chicken manure. COMPASSION FOR ANIMALS And what about the effect of the "factory farming" system on the animals themselves? Over 7.5 billion birds are killed each year in the United States. We would probably like to believe that these animals at least lived fairly comfortable lives until they were taken to the slaughterhouse, and would also like to believe that chickens are then quickly and painlessly killed. Unfortunately, this is not true. Chickens are crowded together in cramped, windowless sheds, and must breathe concentrated excretory ammonia fumes which damage their eyes and lungs. They are mutilated by "debeaking"—the practice of cutting off most of the chicken's beak when the chicken is young. The reason for "debeaking" is that without it, chickens in their cramped circumstances would peck each other and even attack and kill each other. Obviously, a chicken which needs to be "debeaked" in the first place is not a happy chicken; and the process of debeaking (akin to partial amputation of a human finger, without anesthesia) is quite painful in itself. Birds are deliberately bred to gain more weight than their legs and feet can support, leading to more pain. Turkey production is no better than chicken production. Turkeys, like chickens, are kept in intensely overcrowded quarters; they must be heavily dosed with antibiotics, are subject to many diseases, and have their beaks and their toes partially amputated (without anaesthetic, of course). Turkeys over the years have been bred to be fatter and fatter; today's turkey is so overweight that it cannot mate and must be bred through artificial insemination. "Humanely raised" poultry avoids some of the worst abuses, such as debeaking and overcrowding. But chickens and turkeys are still killed long before their natural lifespan has elapsed, and it still is not a healthful food, as meat from any chicken or turkey—no matter how "humanely" raised—is going to be high in fat or protein (or both), and completely lacking in fiber. Chickens do not die easy deaths, either. The "humane slaughter" laws do not cover chicken or any other poultry. Slaughterhouses are operated as mechanical "disassembly" lines with as little human intervention as possible. Stunning devices are not required by law, and even where used only 1/3 of the chickens are effectively stunned. Some chickens have their throats slit and bleed to death while fully conscious. Millions of unfortunate chickens also escape the automatic knives that slit their throats, and thus go into the next stage—the scalding tank—alive and fully conscious.
Tried to kill a weasel/mongoose but it isn't dying? OK this afternoon I recently had a mongoose/weasel coming close to my poultry and it was p****ing me off. I'm terrified of mammals and stuff like that (rabies) and so I waited for it to come close, so I hit it with a heavy 6 inch brickl, it didn't really work and now the mongoose/weasel wailing but still moving a little, I'm too scared to shoot it though because the noise it's making and the wound is making me scared what should I do? I heard they're also pests...mindlessly spreading disease, and killing my poultry

Do you think Disease, Famine and Pestilence is on the rise in the USA? Matthew 24? A flu epidemic is well under way in the United States, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had clear indications that the viruses have mutated, making the current vaccine less effective. http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSN1557212920080215 Arkansas Department of Health has downplayed the importance of the outbreak of leprosy in Northwest Arkansas, stating that 95 percent of the population is genetically resistant to the disease. Leprosy is a major concern in the Marshall Islands and with residents from the Marshall Islands being exempt from immigration laws – including medical requirements – it is no small surprise that Northwest Arkansas, with a large concentration of Marshall Island residents working in the poultry plants, is tracking nine cases of the disease. http://familysecuritymatters.org/challenges.php?id=1386648 Beef Recall USDA: Recalled beef likely already eaten
Should Malaysia ban pork eating? CHICAGO - New studies on food safety have found pork may contain even more dangerous germs than poultry. The findings were presented at the 2001 Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in Chicago. A team of researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested nearly 600 packages of ground pork purchased from different grocery stores in five states. They found high levels of Enterococci bacteria, a common cause of food poisoning that is resistant to antibiotic drugs. Scientists say patients who have antibiotic-resistant enterococcal infections have a death rate of 37 per cent. Enterococci were found on three per cent of ground pork. "With pork chops or steaks, you've got bacteria contamination on the outside," says lead researcher Jennifer McClennan. And with ground meats, the bacteria are found throughout, making them more dangerous. "You've got to make sure to cook (pork) thoroughly." As a result, McClennan says cooks should follow stringent practices when they prepare pork and anything cooked less than medium is probably not a good idea. Another study presented at the symposium raised further concerns about pork. Dutch researchers found the Enterococci bacteria in pigs cause more trouble for humans than the same type of bacteria found in poultry. The researchers recommended farmers use antibiotics sparingly on their animals. About half of the antibiotics given to animals worldwide are used so they can grow bigger and remain disease-free. The continuous exposure to antibiotics can also alter the balance of good to bad germs, promoting the antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria in the animal. Resistant strains can be passed on to humans when they consume the meat of the animal. Researchers found these bacteria in pork seemed to survive and thrive longer in humans than those found in poultry.

is my diet good? Um... ill write down a sort of average day of what i eat: breaky: cereal and milk/ maybe toast << yh thats probly my fav breakys morning snack: sometimes i eat a slice of pizza at school/sometimes skip and eat nothing lunch: could have a sandwich/ a different meal such as pasta/lasagne/potaoes (what my school serves that day) when i get home i have dinner quite early round 5ish- um..i eat different stuff everyday. My mum doesnt deep fry but she does shallow fry some stuff like meat or chicken. A normal dinner is probably some meat/poultry with potatoes/rice/pasta and salad. after dinner i eat fruit mostly but if we have biscuits or something in the house i snack on that. I only drink water. The reason why im asking this is because on my dad's side there a history if heart disease and obesity ( my mums is the opposite, with everyone being skinny and healthy lol) im just worried because i dont want to die young from heart disease or something and wanted to know if my diet was ok. im im 14 5'6"/7" and 110/112 pounds. and if its bad- what should i eat
Do V&V have any "rights" to question? Our diet choice directly and indirectly affect others, like price leverage, govt's unfair distribution of people's tax money to subsidies and compensation to meat industry, control, treatment and research on meat-borne indigenous diseases, contamination and eradication of diseased livestock, etc. Last year the world had spent more than USD6 billion to curb poultries infected by Avian Flu alone (and this is only an example).
Criminal negligence? Charles Bourns, chairman of the National Farmers Union's poultry board, said farmers were worried about the potential impact on sales. He urged shoppers: "Just keep eating chicken and enjoying it. There is no danger from it. This is a disease of chickens and not of humans. Just carry on eating it as per normal." Does anyone in the UK really understand what H5N1 is?
Where can I find an organic diet for my cat that does NOT have some form of chicken in it? My cat has severe food allergies to poultry. She has blown out an eardrum twice because of it. I have had her on Venison and Pea, and Rabbit and Pea dry diets. With both of these I have unfortunately gotten stale food. She now will not eat. I have already started diagnostics on her to see if there is something else going on, but she is ravenous and will not eat her food. It is after hours so I can't find anywhere to get food now. I have bloodwork scheduled for tomorrow. But I believe that all her ills are caused by food. I will not feed her a raw diet. There are too many diseases that go along with that. I had her on solid gold for a couple of years - until they added chicken to their mix. I've had her on IVD and Science diet. I have gotten several stale bags in the last several months because the bags are not sealed properly. Any suggestions would be helpful. I am a former Vet Tech and I am familiar with all the Prescription options. I am looking for something else. I have run out of options there, and am looking at the very real possibility that I cannot feed my cat. Result - euthanasia. I am not willing to go there. Rachel, thanks for the input. I, too am a Former Vet Tech. I am fed up with the Hills and Royal Canin diets. When my cat was first diagnosed with food allergies, we put her on Venison and potato dry. She LOVED it. But then one day I opened a new bag and the food was way darker and smelled different. That was how I learned IVD changed the formula from potato to pea. She absolutly refused to eat it. Long story short, I have had her on Rabbit and pea now for about 3 years. My vet office doesn't take back food that is opened. (at $38 bucks a bag it's killing me). I'm tired of getting stale food from them. They don't stand behind their product. I have an e-mail in to Hills as we speak. Waiting on a reply. But in the mean time, my cat is losing weight. Typically 7# now down to 5.9# I am very worried. I am also in communication with the internist I used to work with. Thank you everyone. I do appreciate your information and help. I believe her problem is totally food related. I am still having the bloodwork done, in case there is some underlying cause. I found a specialty pet food store just a couple of miles from my house. I picked up a couple of cans of Merrick's that has no chicken in it. I also ordered a bag of food (they didn't have it in stock). I prefer to feed dry. And she likes it better.
lice on chickens? I butchered a chicken yesterday, and while plucking, I found it infested with lice. The chicken looked very healthy, was missing no feathers...and all around looked good. So it came as quite a shock. After more research, I see that they have probably had them awhile. The chickens have lost weight and stopped laying, but I thought that was due to the severe cold that we have had around here. So my question is, what is the best way to get rid of the lice? I need something that doesn't have a weaning off time for egg consumption but that is very effective. I also need to know if there are any diseases associated with fowl lice. I was going to apply for NPIP certification in 3-4 months, even though these birds will be gone and I will have 100 new birds (babies from other stocks) have these lice brought diseases on my property that will keep me from participating in the poultry improvement program? Also, is it quite common to have bird lice? Or is it all my fault!?
Is this statement true about cat food??? Stick with poultry (chicken and turkey) and rabbit as the bulk of your cat's diet. Fish and beef are common food allergens in the cat and can cause inflammatory bowel disease and skin allergies. Think feathers and long ears, not horns and fins. I give my kitty one can per day, along with dry. But a couple of the cans have tuna or ocean fish. Should I cut the fish out completely as this states???
OUTBREAK: Leprosy in Arkansas – Brought There by Whom? And should every illegal take a health screening test? In an emergency room in Arkansas, the patient exhibits dark red boils, her skin numb. Another case of leprosy in America. Not far away, a tuberculosis-infected illegal immigrant coughs while on break at the local chicken processing plant – spreading his infectious germs across the break room table. His children, also carrying the disease, which had been all but eradicated from the United States years ago, join hundreds of children at the local public school. Crossing the Mexican border, in a pickup truck filled with “migrant workers” coming to “do the jobs Americans don’t do” in our fields and food processing plants, is the Islamic terrorist who purposefully infected himself with smallpox in order to spread the deadly disease to unsuspecting Americans nationwide. Fact or fiction? Well over 12 million illegal aliens have invaded our country from our southern border, circumventing the strict health requirements that are enforced for those entering legally – requirements that include ensuring the entrants are free from infectious diseases. Our own government continues its push to give them legitimacy, in some cases welcoming them with open arms under the guise of “they are doing the work Americans just don’t do.” However, we don’t know who they are – or what horrific contagions they may have brought with them. In Northwest Arkansas, the state health department has been tracking nine cases of Marshall Island citizens infected with leprosy. According to a report from KFSM, the CBS affiliate in Fayetteville, Northwest Arkansas has a large population of Marshall Island immigrants who have been brought here to work in the poultry plants in the area. Although, according to Dr. Jennifer Bingham in the KFSM report, leprosy is curable with proper attention to treatment, they are not able to enlist compliance from the patients to complete the process. The report also lists 100 cases of tuberculosis in the Springdale area. http://familysecuritymatters.org/challenges.php?id=1386648
