Live Poultry For Sale Chickens Knowledge Base
Starting a Chicken Farm? I have just graduated high school I have very little money, and or experience. I have been doing a lot of research and have found many different perspectives and opinions on the matter of chicken farming. I would really like to start a chicken farm, mainly because I like raising chickens since we have raised them here at my parents home, but also because I really enjoy the simple life. I have found an ad online for a farm for sale with house, 1 poultry barn, stables, and much more for $385,000 in Taylorsville, NC. Here is a link if you would like to view it and give me some feed back http://www.landandfarm.com/property/20_Acre_Poultry_Horse_Cattle_Farm-318529/ Im not looking to make a fortune, I just want to make a comfortable living all I have is just me anyway, no children or wife, and at the moment no girlfriend. I want to know what would to income for a place like this be? Is it affordable with that morgage as well as all other possible expenses? Someone to help out and I can ask some more questions to without typing a book here would be great. Thank you all for your time.
A question (or two) about Zoning Ordinances? I want to get chickens, so I looked up our zoning info. This is what the Zoning guide says for the "Estate" Zone, where I live (in a list of allowed activities): g. Agriculture, which in this district shall mean the cultivation of the soil principally for the production of food products, but shall not include the following: (1) The feeding or other disposal of community or collected garbage. (2) The raising or dealing in poultry, or any animals for business or commercial purposes, except as incidental to a bona fide general farming operation. Said animals or poultry shall not be housed, stabled, kenneled or yarded closer than one hundred (100) feet from any residence other than that of the owner or user of the property. (3) Buildings or structures, and the sale of agricultural products produced soley on the premises, are considered agricultural if located on a lot containing not less than five (5) acres of land area. The general interpretation (by my friends) on this was that I could have chickens, but not for commercial purposes. However, in the guidelines for the "Residential" zone (I see no difference between my zone and this one, I live in a normal neighborhood, not a subdivision) they say right in there that chickens are allowed. What's your opinion on all this? Should I call for clarification? The only problem is, I'm worried that I'll get a no, and they'll close the loophole. Should I go ahead with the chickens? (I know my neighbors wouldn't complain)
Is there a loophole in this Zoning Ordinance? I want to get 3 hens in my backyard. Here's what the Zoning Map says for where I live (in a list of what's allowed): g. (3) Buildings or structures, and the sale of agricultural products produced soley on the premises, are considered agricultural if located on a lot containing not less than five (5) acres of land area From what I can tell, you can't raise chickens for commercial purposes. But mine would be pets, and I wouldn't sell them or their eggs. Can I get away with that?
