How free are free range chickens? I have been paying extra for free range chickens. I dont mind doing this but someone told me at the weekend that free range chickens are only let out for an hour a week. Is this true? Where can I get a truly free free range chicken? I have been buying the free range chickens in M&S. Are they any better or worse than others?
How much freedom do free-range chickens have? Free-range chickens must have some barriers, for example they cannot leave the farm or a certain section of the farm. How free are free-range chickens in either (or both) absolute terms or in terms relative to non-free-range chickens. Thank you.
Why do free-range chickens cost more to keep? Boiler chickens have food in front of them for 23+ hours each day, the sheds are using fuel almost non stop for lighting and warmth and more workers are needed to carry out inspections twice each day. Free range chickens are only kept 17 days longer, but they will eat less because they do not have interferance from artificial lighting and I assume that their shed are not heated. There must logically be other costs, but would that make them more expensive to keep than Boiler chickens?
comparing free range chickens with butter intensive farms? this is for science. as i was searching on the internet i couldn't find anything about this subject. if anyone knows can you please tell me. just in case here is the question: "compare free range chicken farms with buttery (intensive) farms. why do farmers and costumers choose one or the other? which is the cheapest - why? which is the best for the chickens - why?

Does Claxton Poultry use free range chickens? I am wondering how the chickens are raised at Claxton Poultry(www.claxtonpoultry.com). Are they free-range chickens? Or are they stuck in a factories all their lives squished in a tiny cage surrounded by their own waste? I would like to know what I am consuming. Thank you.
How do you feel about people owning their own free range chickens and cattle? Raising them on their property (again, with free run) with some living out their lives on the farm but others being used for consumption (and knowing that the slaughter was quick and humane). Are you against this also or just the inhumane slaughter houses? I was just curious on vegan/vegetarian views on this.
Raw whole milk, free-range chickens, raw milk cheese, whole milk yogurt benefits? I was reading a friend's book about getting rid of sugar, fructose products, soy milk products which seems self-explanatory. Free-Range chickens eating healthier and living healthier and the eggs produced make sense. But he suggests the above items and I don't want to follow a suggestion and find out raw milk products and cheeses may have more health risks than benefits. Right now I'm sticking with Pasterized Homogenized Milk but wondering if there are any real studies on Raw Milk products?

For those people who don't know a Warren chicken is a cross breed chicken, between a Rhode Island Red and a White Leghorn chicken, this is a URGENT request from any users on here, i would appreciate any help, i have searched myself but haven't came across anything apart from welfare issues relating to chickens. Also it does need to be about free range, but if no-one can find any decent info on Warren chickens or free range, then generally would be ok. Thanks

Free range chickens? Has anyone changed their buying habits since seeing the "chicken-out" campaign on TV? I went to the supermarket this morning determined to buy a free-range bird, but they only had standard birds on display. I bought one that looked like it didn't have any hock burns. It was the CO-OP by the way. Are they naughty? Am I a hipocrit? Find out in the next exciting installment of " I'm am intensively farmed chicken, get me out of here" (preferably into my oven with a bit of sage and onion)

Questions about egg-laying in free-range chickens ? For anybody who has free-range hens without roosters, or knows about free-range hens: Do the hens care whether their eggs are collected? Do they try to incubate unfertilized eggs? Also, will hens lay unfertilized eggs at the same rate whether their eggs are collected or left in the nest? And will hens only lay quality unfertilized eggs if fed a special/commercial diet? Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Does organic, free range chicken lead a more normal, content life? I am lacto-ovo vegetarian (eat eggs & dairy). I want to know if free range, organic chickens for eggs have a more normal, content life. Are they laying eggs for us their whole life? Will they get kill some point in their life for their meat? I hope animals lovers answer my question. Or those that know about farming. No joke please. Because I eat an egg everyday and wonder how the chicken are treated. Or do I have to give up eggs, also.
If KFC did a free range chicken option would you eat it again? I love the taste of KFC but i feel bad for those neglected chickens so i've stopped eating it. Well apart from when i'm wasted and loose all my morals! But if KFC offered a free range option for the people with guilt issues would you go back? or even pick it over the normal chicken? and would premium would you be prepared to pay?

Free Range Chickens As Pets? I want chickens that can be free range on my property. I will provide food and water, but i don't want them in a coop. When I was young we had chickens running around like this. They slept in a tree to be safe from animals. What would the best breed be?
free range? i can buy free range chicken, free range eggs, but cannot buy free range chicken livers why?
Why should we buy free-range chicken? Regardless of how well we treat them, the chickens on our free-range farms would not even exist if it were not for the fact that we breed them to kill them. Jamie Oliver's TV show was excellent, but how can we furrow our brows and worry about the welfare of chickens when the sole purpose of their existence is to grow big enough for us to slaughter them?
Battery Chickens or Free range? Can you afford to buy free range and do you feel guilty purchasing cheap chickens, like 2 for a fiver from Tesco after watching the way the chicks are reared in battery farms? I wonder if it will affect the sales in the big supermarkets since the programmes went out last week? And that thing that was done on Fridays TV when J/Oliver compressed the chicken carcasses and said it was used for sausages etc, that was sick.
Whats the most efficient way to feed free range chickens? I have a flock of chickens on my farm and they roam freely. I want to feed them in a way where feed won't be wasted, it seems wasteful to just spread feed over the ground. I've tried using home made bamboo feeders, but my chickens tend to peck at each other when at close distance, and only the biggest seem to get their fill this way. I just want to feed them all properly without wasting feed. would love suggestions.
Free-Range Chickens, and The Wrongfully Convicted.....? free-range chickens. they have lots of open, outdoor space. they're free to run, peck, scratch, dig....whatever and whenever they'd like. silly little things. eating grasses, grains, bugs, etc... all things they enjoy. the Justice Dept. estimated that, out of the over 2,000,000 (thats 2 MILLION, kids) men and women currently in jails and prisons in the US, get this: 6% to 8% are TRULY INNOCENT. that equals 120,000 to 160,000 people doing time for crimes they never commited. how does that make you feel? lucky chickens. aw, man...i knew it. i knew SOMEBODY was going to bring up the fact that the chickens are going to be eaten. you're missing the point entirely. vick: according to what i read, 'wrongfully convicted' MEANS innocent. good answer, flyindustman. point taken.
Question about free range chickens? I have recently had to start eating meat after being a veggie for many years due to health reasons. I am wanting to buy a chicken to cook for a family meal and want to ensure that it has not been in a battery farm or cooped up in a cage etc. Is there a symbol or something that I have to look for on the label? Will it say free range or freedom to roam on the ticket like eggs do? I have heard that some free range chickens are still kept in cages but the cages are a little bigger, so I want to make sure that I am buying the right thing. Thanks.
The meat from the free range chickens we raised is very tough, need cooking advice and recipies? I raised chickens for the first time this summer. They were free range on the farm. They were a dual purpose breed (not the broiler type). We butchered them at about 20weeks old. I dont know if we let them get too old, maybe we did something during the butchering process, or if they are this way just because they were able to run alot on the farm. What ever the reason, the chicken tastes great! It has great flavour, and it is not dry, but... it is very tough, so much so that my husband wont eat it! Does anyone have any advice on ways that I could cook this chicken to help with the toughness of the meat? Maybe I could cook it in the slow cooker? All of the chickens are 4-6lbs and were frozen whole. We dont like anything too fancy, just a simple recipie that will help. I am also open to any advice about how to avoid this problem when raising them next year.
Free-Range Chickens?!?!??? What is the taste difference(s) between free range and regular range chicken? ---I know regular range isn't a word, but it sounded cool----
How high of a fence for a pet free-range chicken? I am wondering how high of a fence is required to keep a pet free-range chicken in the yard? I don't want to do a new fence, just see if my current one is good enough. Also, does a pet chicken need to go somewhere safe inside at night? (no dogs or predators have access to the yard.)
If you order a free-range chicken from the butchers? Then how do you tell if it really is free range? Would butchers be honest and sell you a genuine one, or just pass anything off as free range, when in fact, it's not? Are butchers able to buy in free range chicken? Is is 'safer' to just go to the supermarket and buy a labelled one?
Can baby chickens live free range? I just got some Rhode Island Red Chicks and they are getting too big. They really have an odor and I need to get them out of the aquarium. I plan to make a spot where they can rome around. They are about 3 weeks old. Any additional Chicken facts will help. Please help! I want them to have a healthy life.
Where in Georgia can I find eggs that are truly free-range? By "truly," I mean that the chickens have been allowed adequate space and live in a humane way. I live in the Atlanta area. Also, I'm interested in finding poultry from truly free-range chickens. The Rock Farm someone suggested closed some time ago.
I have free range chickens but all but 2 chickens refuse to go back to the coop why? and how do i fix it? These chickens have been in the coop for a year and they started out free ranging about 1 month ago. I was pretty sure that all the chickens would know to go ohme to the coop but 2 just sleep on the porch. i am afraid they will soon be eatin. I alos have tried locking them in the coop to see if they would learn that it was home but nothing worked I was thinking maybe they were not as intelligent even though shickens in general are not but i didnt know if they cud be less intelligent

How do I get my free range chickens to range where I want them to be? I was given a flock of free range chickens, a nice bunch of mixed types. They have taken to ranging into the neighbors' fields, and roosting in their cherry orchard. How can I convince them to roost in my own acreage? There are good conditions here for free-ranging, including lots of places to scratch and hunt for bugs and such, also some trees that would be good for roosting....if I can just get them to come home!
Do you buy natural, organic, free range, and USDA approved products and food? Do you and your family buy things with natural ingredients and that are organic? Do you buy free range chickens? Do you buy USDA approved meat? Do you buy cosmetics that were NOT tested on animals? Do you buy eco-friendly products? Just wondering if people are trying to save the environment and animals! I also use Swheat Scoop, a litter made from shredded wheat!! It is super bio-degradable and landfill-friendly. If anyone has cats, please use it as your litter!
How many people are going to go free range? After watching Hugh's Chicken Run and Jamie's Fowl Dinners this week, how many of you are going to only buy free range chicken and eggs from now on? im tired of vegans saying meat is unhealthy, what about fish and lean cutts, free range chickens may i go on ? i understand if your a vegan due to animal cruelty or doctors orders but anything else i would call it a mental disorder, there is plenty of meat that is not unhealthy fish being a good example, you can abuse any diet even your vegan diet, if i ate donuts and cakes all day i would probably have shorten my life dramatically, and those of you who say fish is full of chemicals and does the enviroment harm are not educated enough about farming practices and the use of chemicals, sprays, and etc. i understand there is organic and the same goes for fish farming, at the crayfish farm i worked at the farmer and us worked together he used our wasted water as fertilizer and we used his rice to feed our crayfish, we both labeled our product as organically grown, also there is the topic of diseases associated with meat, sorry isnt good enough either, all you have to do is cook your food to get rid of this problem or boil it if your really scared " same process to store canned food " my main question is why do vegans say meat is unhealthy? you are; i come to this site to get some good ideas on side dishes and etc. and when i start looking i always see somebody talking about how unhealthy meat is and etc. it makes me sick to see how " vegans bash meat " our crayfish has little or no fat same with most fish it is very tasty and healthy alternative to pork poulty and cow, my body couldnt cope with the grease and etc, but there was no way i could become a vegan, i cant live on side dishes for the rest of my life aleister: i agree with you there some not all meat will raise chlestorol im living prove of that, but my point is there is a lot of other alternatives to greasy meat, some say the oil in fish will lower your count dramatically some types of fish have no fat content at all asleep: ill repost this topic everytime i see what i call is non-sense and no we were not officialy labeled by the fda as organic but however there is several other fish farms in this area that has the official stamp of approval, " fda certified " and also i am not talking about heavy meats and what i think your trying to say is meat heavy in fat or chlestorol your totally missing my point as usual and the term factory farms, what is the definition and how is it harmful, any farm plant or animal is harmful to the enviroment if done improperly with the use of chemicals or pesticides just look what ddt did to the enviroment and not to mention a few others still used today matt: ur another totally missing the point, there is no such thing as prions or mercury in organic fish, fish farms by law have to submit before even becoming a farm samples of water, soil, and stock before selling onto the market, you can get these samples through research of any company that has a liscense to sell food products people this is my main question why do people say meat is unhealthy? i really dont care how enviromentally damaging it can be because this can go both ways, plant or animal, do your research, and if you want to go clean and healthy with no chemicals or hormones buy organic

Help please.. Free range & organic chicken? Hi. As far as I know, there are the following types of chicken available: Battery farmed chicken Free range chicken Organic chicken It's number 3 I am a bit confused about. If a chicken label says "organic" does this automatically mean it is a free range bird as well? Or could it be a battery bird simply fed organic food? Thanks.
