Would anyone be willing to give a tour of a profitable free range chicken farm? I'm looking to start a free range chicken farm. Would anyone be willing to let me tour their chicken farm and give me some pointers? For ex: whats more profitable selling eggs or raising chickens for meat or a little of both? i want to start up a free range chicken farm and need some advice? i want to know if i can house free range chickens on a allotment so i can do the same sort of thing that HUGH did on tv a few weeks ago ?
Why should we buy free-range chicken? Regardless of how well we treat them, the chickens on our free-range farms would not even exist if it were not for the fact that we breed them to kill them. Jamie Oliver's TV show was excellent, but how can we furrow our brows and worry about the welfare of chickens when the sole purpose of their existence is to grow big enough for us to slaughter them?
How much freedom do free-range chickens have? Free-range chickens must have some barriers, for example they cannot leave the farm or a certain section of the farm. How free are free-range chickens in either (or both) absolute terms or in terms relative to non-free-range chickens. Thank you.
What is the expected annual income for a small free range chicken farm? please don't say stupid stuff like how small, just tell me and how could it benefit a community ok I wasn't very clear EGGS not meat
Why do free range chickens form groups when living on the same farm? I think there are different breeds.? I'm doing a report for school and need some details answers. The chikens I'm asking about live on my father's farm. The chickens have made their own groups (3) on their own. Is that because of there breed? I don't think that their all that different. They don't eat, sleep or hang out in the same area.
how to wash my free range chicken's eggs? looking to start a free range chicken farm for egg production and I am wondering how you clean them in preparation to sell? any information would be appreciated!
Free range chickens? Has anyone changed their buying habits since seeing the "chicken-out" campaign on TV? I went to the supermarket this morning determined to buy a free-range bird, but they only had standard birds on display. I bought one that looked like it didn't have any hock burns. It was the CO-OP by the way. Are they naughty? Am I a hipocrit? Find out in the next exciting installment of " I'm am intensively farmed chicken, get me out of here" (preferably into my oven with a bit of sage and onion)
Free range chicken, true or false advertising? The question: Are supermarkets/chicken farms LEGALLY required to be truthful about what they advertise on their product? I.e. if it is sold as 'free range' then it by law has to be farmed at free range standard? Hi all, I've been wondering about this matter for quite sometimes. I cook a lot my self and I always prefer to buy free range chickens because they are supposed to be better than caged chickens, but the amout of fat found on those chickens are still enormous, whihc makes me think whether they are truly free range or simple false advertisement to fool buyers.
The meat from the free range chickens we raised is very tough, need cooking advice and recipies? I raised chickens for the first time this summer. They were free range on the farm. They were a dual purpose breed (not the broiler type). We butchered them at about 20weeks old. I dont know if we let them get too old, maybe we did something during the butchering process, or if they are this way just because they were able to run alot on the farm. What ever the reason, the chicken tastes great! It has great flavour, and it is not dry, but... it is very tough, so much so that my husband wont eat it! Does anyone have any advice on ways that I could cook this chicken to help with the toughness of the meat? Maybe I could cook it in the slow cooker? All of the chickens are 4-6lbs and were frozen whole. We dont like anything too fancy, just a simple recipie that will help. I am also open to any advice about how to avoid this problem when raising them next year.

What's the difference between a free range chicken with a battery farm chicken? i'm doing a piece o work in science and i need to find the difference between them
How do you feel about people owning their own free range chickens and cattle? Raising them on their property (again, with free run) with some living out their lives on the farm but others being used for consumption (and knowing that the slaughter was quick and humane). Are you against this also or just the inhumane slaughter houses? I was just curious on vegan/vegetarian views on this.

Help please.. Free range & organic chicken? Hi. As far as I know, there are the following types of chicken available: Battery farmed chicken Free range chicken Organic chicken It's number 3 I am a bit confused about. If a chicken label says "organic" does this automatically mean it is a free range bird as well? Or could it be a battery bird simply fed organic food? Thanks.
is there a store in San Jose CA that sells Organic Free Range Chicken? I found out that Foster Farms raises their chickens 13000+ in small un movable quarters. And their feed has msg. So, is there a store out here that has free range chicken? Thanks
chickens should not be from factory farms they should be organic or free range? I am writing up a speech on the topic above and am looking for a good end line. The line could be said at the start and at the end, eg a slogan would be awsome websites with good information or/and images would also be great thanks I am not arguing that orgain tastes better i am arguing for the welfare of the chickens
Battery Chickens or Free range? Can you afford to buy free range and do you feel guilty purchasing cheap chickens, like 2 for a fiver from Tesco after watching the way the chicks are reared in battery farms? I wonder if it will affect the sales in the big supermarkets since the programmes went out last week? And that thing that was done on Fridays TV when J/Oliver compressed the chicken carcasses and said it was used for sausages etc, that was sick.
Barn-laid vs free-range eggs, which is better? The RSPCA (my country's main animal welfare group) endorse two free-range egg farms in the south but endorse considerably more farms that employ the barn-laid system. They've received a lot of criticism for this but claim that barn hens are more protected from the elements and predators and are therefore happier overall. One of these farms actually debeak their hens to prevent them hurting each other. The RSPCA claim it is necessary in this particular case due to the behavior of the flock in question; critics claim the behavior is the result of overcrowding. I have always bought free-range eggs with the belief that these provide the best conditions for the birds, and I can't help but suspect the RSPCA are doing this to appease egg farms in order to reduce the horrors of battery farming. Are barn hens really in better conditions than free-range chickens?
Raising free range chickens? My family owns a small farm about (70 acres) & we're trying to go organic well i'm wanting to get some free-range hens so we can have fresh eggs. Where can I go to make sure that my chicks are ACTUALLY from free-range antibiotic free chickens? I'm thinking about ordering them from a catalog do you know any names for the catalogs? Also where can I get organic or natural chicken feed from? Like I said I want everything to be organic & humane as possible so any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks most of the farms close by are no longer around bastards sold out now theres suburbs :( so I have no clue where to find other organic farms
Does organic, free range chicken lead a more normal, content life? I am lacto-ovo vegetarian (eat eggs & dairy). I want to know if free range, organic chickens for eggs have a more normal, content life. Are they laying eggs for us their whole life? Will they get kill some point in their life for their meat? I hope animals lovers answer my question. Or those that know about farming. No joke please. Because I eat an egg everyday and wonder how the chicken are treated. Or do I have to give up eggs, also.
Is there such thing as free range milk? After the large spread of footage and information about the cruelty of live exports all over Australia recently i have seriously considered becoming vegetarian. I have also found on the internet how they treat dairy cows at large successful dairy farms and it also disgusted me. Is there such thing as free range milk? where the cows are left to roam free in paddocks untill they are herded in to be milked. Like free range chickens are left to walk about paddocks and their eggs are just collected.
Are Christian religious organizations like chicken farms; some are humane, others or cruel? Some chicken farms have free range chickens. The chickens are allowed to roam around an enclosure, roll in the dust, peck in the dirt for grubs and have little chicken social groups with nerds, sporty types and pretty chickens, just like high school. Other chicken farms are cruel and the chickens are permanently kept in small cages with florescent lighting simulating daytime. They live their short and pain filled lives in these small cages never knowing what real sun looks like; never knowing what it feels like to simply have wind blowing in their little chicken faces. This is analogous to the different kinds of Christian organizations, right?
Question about free range chickens? I have recently had to start eating meat after being a veggie for many years due to health reasons. I am wanting to buy a chicken to cook for a family meal and want to ensure that it has not been in a battery farm or cooped up in a cage etc. Is there a symbol or something that I have to look for on the label? Will it say free range or freedom to roam on the ticket like eggs do? I have heard that some free range chickens are still kept in cages but the cages are a little bigger, so I want to make sure that I am buying the right thing. Thanks.
Do you know any good slogans about chickens? Know any good slogans about Battery Farmed chickens or Free Range Chickens or both?
Whats the difference between free range and farm assured? I am trying to be a more ethical shopper, and have decided to buy fair trade and free range products where possible, but the chicken confuses me, what is the difference between farm assured and free range? I understand the free range but is farm assured the same?
What did people feed chickens before they became known as free range/organic and before the corn fed episode? Im talking about the chickens people kept years ago on small farms/homesteads before the factory farming thing.
raiseing meat chickens for people and selling free range pastured eggs on farm, how much should I charge? I do not have a weight scale, so I would charge $3.00 base price per chicken, plus a cost per week that the chicken was on the farm. These will be cornish giants and Rhode Island Reds, and will be raised on fresh green grass free to run on pastures at our farm. The chickens will be picked up at the farm as live birds at what ever age the buyer decides. I live in alberta canada and would need to charge a premium price for a premium animal. It will cost at least $.28/week to grow these chickens. The hens are raised the same as the meat chickens, and live a very happy and healthy life! Egg yolks are orange from their diet and rich in flavour. I am not a company, I am a stay at home mother of three that would like to turn her love of chickens into some money to fix up the family farm and help hubby stay home from work a little more. Any suggestions? These will no be organic chickens or eggs, but they are fed on grass, and grains, and free to eat as much as they can find in the open pastures. I cant charge as much as organic and wont give it away for the same as factory raised. Would you pay 2.50/dozen would you pay $8.50 $7.75 Or $7.00 for live Fryer Would you pay $10.00 $6.50 Or $8.00 for live Roaster
Poll. Primark Or Zara? Free Range Chicken Or Battery Farm..? Would you rather buy your clothes from Primark - Where it is very cheap, however the clothes do not last for long and the majority of it is slave labour.. OR Zara - Where the clothes are more expensive, however will last a long time and you know that the people who payed for the clothes will be payed properly.. AND what eggs do you buy at home Free Range Chicken - The chicken has had a lovely life, running free, giving time for it to lay eggs.. The eggs are tastier, but more expensive. OR Battery Eggs - The chicken has been kept in a small cage for its whole life, in many cases with no space to turn around and spread its wings.. However it is much cheaper. I hope I have not made any of these 'bias' . However if you feel I have sorry :S In the Zara Section, I meant people who MADE the clothes.. Not Paid lol
Lack of co-ordination in chickens? One of our chickens that our friend has is very wobbly on her feet, shifts her weight to balance herself all the time and often puts out a wing to steady herself. She is very underweight, but is the first one to the food and appears to be getting her fair share. My friend also mentioned when she puts her head down to eat, instead of her tail feathers lifting up (you know, as they normally would), they stay down. I didn't see this happening, but it sounds like she was tucked up. Tomorrow I will go to work (I work on a free-range chicken farm) and can ask my boss who will probably be able to advise me and see the chicken in person, but does anyone have any ideas or suggestions of what might be causing it? Thanks!
what do farmers with free range hens do with the hens when they stop laying? I no you could keep them as pets but someone with a big free range farm aint going to do that, otherwise you would have hundreds of non laying hens...so what heappens them? surley their too old to have as a chicken diner?

I'll kill it if necessary just want to know where it comes from before i hand over a tenner ,having a fancy label convinces me of nothing. if i'm paying the premium i want to see the proof, i will not buy an expensive chicken from a shop, and that goes for farm shops also who have bought the supposed free ranger in from a local farm, unless i know where it has come from , i've googled my area but cannot find a much. i'm nipping out to tesco's for some free range eggs .i'll expect good answers on my return. What would be the hardest thing about Chicken Farming? Hoping to start a free-range chicken farm.
im tired of vegans saying meat is unhealthy, what about fish and lean cutts, free range chickens may i go on ? i understand if your a vegan due to animal cruelty or doctors orders but anything else i would call it a mental disorder, there is plenty of meat that is not unhealthy fish being a good example, you can abuse any diet even your vegan diet, if i ate donuts and cakes all day i would probably have shorten my life dramatically, and those of you who say fish is full of chemicals and does the enviroment harm are not educated enough about farming practices and the use of chemicals, sprays, and etc. i understand there is organic and the same goes for fish farming, at the crayfish farm i worked at the farmer and us worked together he used our wasted water as fertilizer and we used his rice to feed our crayfish, we both labeled our product as organically grown, also there is the topic of diseases associated with meat, sorry isnt good enough either, all you have to do is cook your food to get rid of this problem or boil it if your really scared " same process to store canned food " my main question is why do vegans say meat is unhealthy? you are; i come to this site to get some good ideas on side dishes and etc. and when i start looking i always see somebody talking about how unhealthy meat is and etc. it makes me sick to see how " vegans bash meat " our crayfish has little or no fat same with most fish it is very tasty and healthy alternative to pork poulty and cow, my body couldnt cope with the grease and etc, but there was no way i could become a vegan, i cant live on side dishes for the rest of my life aleister: i agree with you there some not all meat will raise chlestorol im living prove of that, but my point is there is a lot of other alternatives to greasy meat, some say the oil in fish will lower your count dramatically some types of fish have no fat content at all asleep: ill repost this topic everytime i see what i call is non-sense and no we were not officialy labeled by the fda as organic but however there is several other fish farms in this area that has the official stamp of approval, " fda certified " and also i am not talking about heavy meats and what i think your trying to say is meat heavy in fat or chlestorol your totally missing my point as usual and the term factory farms, what is the definition and how is it harmful, any farm plant or animal is harmful to the enviroment if done improperly with the use of chemicals or pesticides just look what ddt did to the enviroment and not to mention a few others still used today matt: ur another totally missing the point, there is no such thing as prions or mercury in organic fish, fish farms by law have to submit before even becoming a farm samples of water, soil, and stock before selling onto the market, you can get these samples through research of any company that has a liscense to sell food products people this is my main question why do people say meat is unhealthy? i really dont care how enviromentally damaging it can be because this can go both ways, plant or animal, do your research, and if you want to go clean and healthy with no chemicals or hormones buy organic
What are yore favorite three things that have eggs in them?!? Granny Crabtree: "We may switch from growing vegetables to running a free-range chicken farm! Just testing the market appeal......"
am i really helping chickens by buying free range brown eggs? my wife and i buy brown eggs that are certified free range. i'm told this statement isn't worth the carton it's printed on, bc the chickens only get 15 mins a day outside. is this true? or am i actually contributing to humane farming?
How many harnessed chickens would it take to equal one (1) horsepower? Feel free to use free range foster farms to frozen chickens in your answer.
What kind of grass is good for organic free range chicken production? Hello I have a farm and want to give a good grass for my poultry (also hens). Appreciate your help.
Is beef "free range" by definition? We all know that chickens can be battery-farmed or free range. But cows can't be battery farmed, can they? Can I assume that any beef I buy will be from cows that were raised well? We all know that chickens can be battery-farmed or free range. But cows can't be battery farmed, can they? Can I assume that any beef I buy will be from cows that were raised well? --A link or justification for answers (accusations of poor quality, for example) would be very helpful.
Where can I get rid of my chickens in Preston, Lancashire? Okay, my grandad bought me some really feral chickens that are just impossible to tame for a beginner like me. We are going to buy some new, friendly chickens from a proper farm. Can anyone tell me where I can get rid of my chickens near Preston, Lancashire? P.S. A battery farm is not an option, only a free range farm or something like that.
Is there such a thing as gelatin made from free-range animals? I am a synchronized swimmer, and we use gelatin to keep our hair up and out of our faces in competition. If you need to know more about the process here is a list of FAQS about synchro: http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:Ac7haG99c-0J:www.sarasota-synchro.org/SassyFAQ1007.pdf+gelatin+synchro&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=ca (Scroll down to the end of page 2, section on "knoxing") Anyway, I am not a vegetarian, but I do have a problem with the way most animals are treated in mass agriculture. I grew up on a small scale free-range rabbit and chicken farm. That being said, I readily consume free-range and locally produced animals and animal by-products. I'm not looking for an alternative to gelatin, because nothing else works as well. I just need to know if I can purchase gelatin made from free-range animals in Canada. Thanks! I don't need hair gel, I need to know about gelatin, as in the foodstuff. We boil plain gelatin and place it on our head with our hair back. The cold water does not melt the gelatin, and it washed out in a hot shower. Regular hair gel washes out in water, so it is useless in this case.
Free range chicken eggs ? I do not currently eat eggs since I cannot find a farm in my area that properly cares for their chickens (I refuse to fund animal abuse) I do not own my chickens anymore and cannot at the moment due to space. Is there some way to find a farm in my area? A searching tool of sorts? I would also like to see the chickens as well and their regular care. I live in VT so there is no shortage of farms, many of them are not selling their eggs or offering any kind of "tour" for me to see the chickens. Thanks so much in advance!
Which of the violations of the chicken farms in the salmonella case is considered the problem? The FDA sited the chicken farm responsible for the salmonella outbreak for the following violations among others: - Live rodents and mice at the farms - Holes allowing wildlife access - Chickens tracking manure - Live flies - Wild birds flying in and out Organic eggs are gathered from free range chickens. All of these "violations" would be common with organic chickens. So are they really a problem? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38922052/ns/health-food_safety/ "meat and bone meal" - what is the problem? Chickens are not vegetarians.
Does God care that in chicken FACTORIES chickens are handled carelessly by the people that work there? I am not talking about a free range farm, I am talking about a building PACKED with chickens.
how do I explain to my roommates that cage free is not the same as range free eggs? like cage free just means they are not crammed together in one cage it means that each chicken egg layer has their own cage whereas range free means they chicken egg layer gets to run around on the farm, and that is the most normal chickens work hard to lay eggs and only lay eggs so much before they die, we need to respect them and not buy cheap caged up eggs or even cage free cage free is a misnomer and I cannot believe the FDA allows that false advertising.
Vegans, if you lived out in the country and had chickens roaming freely? well-fed and very happy would you eat their unfertilized eggs? Or at least, some of them? I am very against factory farms. I understand that most "free range" chickens are not even truly free range. However, I do not understand why some vegans would still refuse to eat the eggs in this scenario.
Is chicken bought from the butcher necessarily free range? Or do they sell intensively farmed chicken too?
can someone tell me the Health benefits from eating chicken? any kind of chicken, factory farmed, free range, organic, fried chicken, what benefits do I get from eating chicken?
Where are some brands that sell chicken that are friendly to the chickens? The only real reason I'm a vegetarian is because they're so horrible to animals in the meat corporation. I've heard of free range animal farms but, people say even they treat them badly. Where's a brand I know they can be friendly and somewhat humane to the chickens. thanks!
Hey!!!!!! >:(? I was on PETAs Web Site and they are saying that all "free range" and "natural" Places are lying and that the conditions are just as bad but we run a small free range Chicken farm and our chickens really are!! They are free to roam on all these like 2 acres and every day I go out and collect eggs. They can go in and out of their coop any time they want and lay whenever the heck they want. Alot of farmers I know really are humane and Free Range!!! What the heck? I've even named the magority of them!!! Like (don't laugh) our rooster Mr. Speckles!!!! He's speckled with alot of dif colors.
free range or battery chickens.!? ewwww ive just seen how they are farmed and it is distugusting? how can i lobby the government to stop this barbaraty? ive gone right off chicken.?
Unprocessed meat, free range chicken etc? My family and I are trying to be as self sufficient as possible and don't like processed foods. My question is free range chicken is pretty easy to understand and the ones we get taste loads better than the battery farm ones. How do I know what additives and farming methods are behind the meat I buy in the butcher? I asked the butcher where his meat comes from and he said it was a farm in Limerick. But how I would know what's added to it, it tastes good and he prepares the cuts in his shop. What questions should I ask? And is packaged meat in the supermarkets always "processed"? I nearly keeled over when I saw "Fast Food Nation" and the Jamie Oliver series to see cruel farming methods. I need to know what to avoid. Thanks for any guidance.
Does unfit farmed animals mean unfit food? For instance, high cholesterol levels. If battery-farmed chickens and non free-range farmed livestock have high cholesterol levels, can this be carried on in the food chain? I'm sure that farmers would say "no" but what do scientists think?
Anyone have a easy egg nog recepie for 1 or 2 servings? I have a huge craving for egg nog but I can't venture out into the bad weather. Anyone know a quick and easy recepie that makes 1-2 servings? Also I am concerned about the raw eggs. I am using eggs from my friends farm. They are free range chickens. Are those eggs better to use than store bought?
Starting an Poultry Egg Farm - help - where ? I am looking to start my own medium size free range chicken farm in the midlands - south derbyshire area of the UK. For example do you own or a friend own a chicken farm and would possibly show me arround ? .. many thanks for all your help - adam Contact me at : adamoninternet [at] hotmail.co.uk
Where to buy humanely raised, non-factory farmed chicken? Is there a specific brand that raises free range, non-factory farmed chickens? One where the chickens have adequate space as they are being raised and are treated respectfully? If so, what stores can this chicken be purchased in? I didn't ask for flak, October. I know it's not compassionate to kill chickens, but I'm not asking for your opinion, so don't bother responding if you aren't going to answer. To everyone else, thanks. I'll check Whole Foods or local farmer's markets.
What are some alternatives to factory farm meat? I am specifically looking for websites that list and explain all of the options with their pros and cons of meat that does not come from factory farms. Examples: grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, kosher beef
Free range eggs, better for you? really? I mean, there was this one topic about free range and cage eggs. That those chickens who are free do also get stress out around the farm due to snakes and other predators. So in the end, both kinds dont really make much difference? Any opinions? I know some animal rights people might offended coz i buy cage eggs, well im sorry that's all i can afford. So please keep it calm and clear.
Vegetarian Rules and Basic Veggie Info.? Hi, I am a 1 month Lacto Ovo vegetarian, and I thought that this was OK. But does this mean that I am not really a vegetarian? I hate the Idea of hurting the Animals, and I don't know if the Milk/Eggs I am eating are OK. Like eggs in: Mayo, Mini Spring Rolls, etc... or the Milk in : Chocolate Bars, Milk (I only drink Beatrice) etc... How do I find out what milk they used and if the Animals were harmed, same goes for the eggs. Currently, I only order my eggs from a free range chicken farm, and I only drink Beatrice. I just want to know if being a lacto ovo is OK. My family is really really tight on Money right now so we can't afford all the fancy vegetarian stuff (I am the only one in the family) and that is the reason why I am Lacto Ovo. I just want to know any rules and if I am breaking them, or if I am still harming animals but drinking milk and consuming egg PRODUCTS. And, WHEN I do go full vegetarian, I would like to know any CHEAP veggie products. Thanks and any websites with info would be greatly appreciated!
Free Range Eggs in Malaysia? Anyone heard of free range eggs? It's eggs from chicken that are allowed to roam freely, both indoor and outdoor. It is healthier since the chickens gets a more balanced diet instead of just eating grains, corn and seeds. Do you think people (in Malaysia) would buy free range eggs or will setting up a farm be a waste of money?
what is sterling salmon? I was told this is like farming "free range" chickens of the sea. are other types of fish "sterling" as well?
What constitutes "free range" in the UK? I keep my chickens in a pen that gives them about a meter-and-a-bit squared each. There are six of them. Which farming method can I advertise my eggs as and what constitutes free range in the UK?
are there still people in the world that think chickens are herbivores? i heard from some people that because chickens in factory farms only get fed feed, they thought that chickens are herbivores. but they arn't, and feeding them just feed isn't good for them, they need bugs too. and i dont like it when people say were better than chickens, so we can do what ever we want to them. Which isn't right. Chickens are the most abused animals in the world too, and sense they feed us and get rid of pests around the house and things like that, we should respect them more, but we still call them stupid and kick them around. Now i know they arn't as smart as us, im not saying that, im just saying, why are we verbally and physically abusing them when we steal everything from them and owe them so much but never give them anything but an occasional life in a free ranged farm where they still are forcfully involved with humans by being hit by cars. I have chickens and have been studying and researching them for some time now.but anyway why do people think they are your right, i did. but i guess i just wanted to know other peoples opinions.
How can I cut back on eating factory farmed animals/milk? I eat meat because I need the protein. I drink milk for the calcium. But I'm concerned about the limits that factory farm animals are being pushed to, cruelty, and chemicals. Lately I learned that drinking milk supports the deplorable veal industry. In short my ethics are catching up to me. I've decided I need to "be the change I want to see". Short of raising my own free range chickens and cows, what are some practical solutions/alternatives?
Explain to me why a vegan would have a problem with...? me buying five or six hens, giving them a good, safe shelter and very large yard to enjoy. I would earn their trust and enjoy their company, provide them with everything they need and take care of every nutritional need. Then I would eat the eggs. What is wrong with that? If the chickens aren't using them, why couldn't I? I can understand not eating the eggs of factory farmed chickens or of local 'free range' farms who kill the chickens when they don't lay eggs anymore. But with my example, what's wrong with that? Explain please :) No, if there is no rooster there then the eggs have zero potential to become chicks. So is it simply because it is from an animal? Even though there is no harm or stress being given to the chickens?
Has anyone recently gotten a fertilized egg in their store-bought groceries? I got one from Rose Acre Dutch Farms today....first time in over 30 years.....just curious....I thought all the modern processing separated chickens from roosters....and NO, this company/brand doen't use free-range chickens.
Is meat from a butcher better than the grocery store? I usually just buy meat at the grocery store but there is a butcher in town and I thought about trying it out. Is meat from butchers usually better? Is it usually from local farms or could it be from anywhere? Also, do they have options of "free range" meat, like free range chicken at the butcher? Thanks for any input also is the meat cheaper at a butcher? also, do you have to tell them how you want things cut ro are things pre-cut?
Geese living with Chickens? A local teacher rescued a damaged goose egg and 4 days later it hatched. They are hoping to place it on a farm and we'd be happy to take it except we have no fences and 10 free-range chickens. The chickens sleep in a coop at night- they walk in around 7pm every night. Can we add the goose? Make a separate coop for it? Will they get along? Will the goose stick around? I don't want to take it if it's unrealistic for it to survive.
How many of you didn't know about factory farmed pork products? There's huge awareness now about battery hens and the market for free-range chickens and eggs is growing steadily. But my husband went into a butcher the other day and asked for free-range pork, and they laughed at him. How many of you are aware of the appalling conditions that factory farmed pigs have to endure? How do consumers feel about organic foods? (everyone please look!)? I am doing a project on organic vs. traditional farming. My part in the project is to find out the consumers veiwpoint about organic foods. So if anyone would tell me how they feel about organic foods please answer this question. Thanks! Here are some of the other answers... Organic foods are good for the people who feel the need to buy them. They are good business for people growing them. The are a growing niche market, but will never take the place of traditional farming. I personally would eat and even buy organic food at times but don't feel that I have to have it, and am not willing to pay a higher price to get it. Over all I guess you would say I might be sort of neutral about organic food, but definitely not against it. ~Farm gal. Free range organic chicken, organic milk and organic veggies I'd buy if they weren't prohibitively expensive and consider it money well spent. Particularly chicken. But my thought is the products are over-priced. ~Jack P
Help! My dog killed a chicken, What can I do as an alternative to a muzzle? I just moved onto an organic farm with a shared house. The owner of the house keeps free range chickens as pets. My bassethound/blackhound mix chased a chicken and successfully caught it. He didnt draw blood or act savage. Just playful and proud. He is a happy go lucky pup. The landlord has suggested that I get a muzzle for him to prevent him from going after a chicken again. The thought of doing this to my pup breaks my heart. Any suggestions as an alternative? Besides tying a dead chicken to his neck for a week. I work during the day and I am not able to supervise but dont wish to kennel him, as part of the reason I moved into the place is so that he could be outside on a farm loving life. Any thoughts or solutions?
I have lost 3 ducks. Before death, they seem to have involuntary spasms in their legs and fall down a lot.? I have a small flock, free range-mostly Khaki Cambells. Really docile several days before death. Supplement their free range diet (organic farm) with commercial non-medicated chicken scratch and layer pellets. They have a small pond, large indoor shelter with straw floor at night.
How to sell my free range eggs to the public? I have been selling my free range eggs to a restaurant at a good price per dozen but never know when competition will set in and I know I could get a better price from the public. Trouble is I have had no luck trying to sell by the side of the road or advertising in the paper. There's no use putting a sign outside my farm because everyone around my area has their own chickens. Thing is, I know there is a big demand for free range eggs and people will pay top price for them especially when they are delivered fresh- no more than 24 hours from point of lay. I just can't find those people - I only hear or read about them in the news. Markets and shops are no good because they take too much of the profit. Also, non free range and/or old eggs are often labeled as fresh and free range when they are not. So it seems to me I need a way of proving my product. Any suggestions? Thanks for the answers but with 400 chickens, I'm gonna need more than a garage sale. Free range = not stuck in cages- free to roam the paddocks.
are ufos real? if their are people from outerspace, what must they think of us?are we on their menu? is earth just a breeding farm, we being the cosmic equal to the free range chicken? if we went to there planet would we be seen as illegal aliens, out to steal their jobs and collect welfare?
I have 4 hens and one rooster, for laying eggs. In the past month and a half I have found 3 very small eggs? The eggs roughly measure around 2cm in length. Does anyone know why these eggs are being produced. The chickens live free range on a farm and are fed scraps and laying pellets
Chickens kept in horrendous conditions? When you buy eggs do you stop and think about the conditions they are kept in. I always buy free range eggs and get them from farm shops if possible. I know everyone doesnt have acsess to farm shops but please try to buy eggs where chickens are treated well. thanks everone for your replies. I agree we should demand better quality food from supermarkets
Why do vegans say meat is unhealthy...what about fish and other meats low in fat? and if you said fish is bad because of enviromental polutants what about fish from farms? some people might say fish farming is bad for the enviroment but did you think about all the chemicals and insecticides that they spray on plants? even plants are sprayed with hormones, there is organic fish farms just like there is organic produce and free range chickens and what have you, people keep an open mind, i dont want to hear a bunch of hypcritical crap just stay with the post and answer the question I UNDERSTAND ANIMAL ACTIVIST AND DOCTORS ORDERS THAT IS NOT MY DEBATE HERE caring for the enviroment lol you must not have read my post, next please most farms use chemicals sprays and fertilizers chemicals= bad for the enviroment
How much space do chickens need if you want the grass to live? Does anyone know what the area of a run should be per chicken if you want to keep the grass green? On my farm free ranging is not an option, because of our garden, and because there are a lot of feral chickens, and I don't want the wild roosters harrassing or abducting my hens. I figure the next best thing is to fence in an area large enough that it won't be reduced to dirt. Maybe one hundred square feet per bird? Five hundred? We have considerable rainfall, and tropical sunshine, so the grass growing conditions are good. Thanks for any info, anyone.
The future of food? I recently saw Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's program about battery farmed chicken and I was quite impressed by how many people he managed to stop eating battery farmed chicken. I myself always eat organic or free range. However, the program got me thinking, with the continued pace of human population growth are organic and free range farming really viable options for feeding the future population? Or are we going to be forced to revert to battery methods of farming or Genetic modification?
Am I wrong NOT to feel guilty about buying cheap chicken? After the Jamie Oliver programme last week, I resolved to buy only free-range chicken and eggs in future. Then I remembered all the suffering people in the world...... children in Romanian orphanages, people in Africa dying daily for want of clean water, or for lack of a 12p sachet of rehydration salts, kids being neglected and abused in the UK, people being imprisoned worldwide purely for their beliefs...... etc. etc. etc. So, much as I hate cruelty in any form, and much as I'd like to see intensive farming abolished, I refuse to feel guilty about buying a £2.50 chicken instead of a £7+ organic free-range one. I haven't the money to contribute towards solving all the world's problems, and I care far more about one orphanage's-worth of caged children than I do about a million caged chickens, so that's where the money I save by buying cheap chicken is going. Who agrees with this standpoint? Andrea M; the point is I AM doing something for suffering children. I'm donating the money I save buying intensively farmed chicken, to what I consider worthier causes- people being vastly more important than animals in my view. Also.... paying a fiver more for free-range might prevent one chicken from suffering, but it won't ultimately save its life. £5 could save the lives of dozens of children in Africa. Shambo: Interesting. I assume from you attitude that you contribute to ALL the good causes in the world, but if not do you feel "thoroughly ashamed" for the ones you don't give money towards??? We can't all care about everything. I'm giving money to change the injustices I care about.
