How do you educate Chicken to enter their coop at night???? We have recently built a chicken run consisting of a coop on stilts (600mm high) which is entered by a ramp with footbars at 150mm spacing. The coop is contained within a fully enclosed area (frames with chicken wire) with is approx. 12 square metres. Upon purchaing 5 chicken (16 week old Marans) they have settled in remarkably well (providing 8 eggs in first 3 days) and during the daytime they appear happy to climb the ramp and indeed 1 of the hens actually used the nest box on the 3rd day. However at night they have not worked out that it would be prudent for them to enter the coop where there are 2 perches and the floor is covered with sawdust for their comfort. On the second night we physically picked them up and placed them in the coop where they stayed until morning (albeit with the door to the ramp left shut) On the third night it looked as though they would enter on their own accord. Alas, at dusk they huddled together at the base to the ramp. SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

The coop will probably be placed in an area with a large 8' chain link fence on 2 of the sides and a building on another. I'm mainly trying to figure out how to make a roof and the coop. I do like some of the coop pictures I looked at with the nesting area stuck out some in the back with a roof that lifts up to get to the nests. I'd like to find more pictures of the insides of coops especially for ducks. I assume they would have to be made different. I'm currently living with my bf and his parents on their farm. My bf's dad has had chickens and turkeys before but were free to roam the whole farm. We have to many cats around and everyone doesn't want the turkeys runnin loose since they got attacked by them. I was thinking about 5 nest boxes for chickens/ducks each. Probably have 2 females and 1 male each. I'll probably make the coop so I can add extra nests if needed. I'll tell my bf's dad about the other fowl so we can wait or build a seperate coop later on.

Can anyone recommend a good brand of organic feed, for chicks and later layers? I am in the process of building my chicken coop so I can get a dozen or so hens for our own use. I'd like to keep them organic if possible. Or maybe someone has a recipe for making up my own feed for them?

Which nails are best for my air framing nailer ? The nailer has three angle settings for the differnt nail styles.....does it matter which I use as long as they are big enoungh or does the angle have a purpose? I am new to air powered framing nailers, but I need to build a chicken coop and am to old and lazy to swing a hammer!

Chicken Coops with Linoleum Floor? I am planning to build a small chicken coop (4 X8') and the plans call for a plywood floor which I was thinking of covering with linoleum in the hopes that it may make it easier to clean, disinfect or powerwash. I have some questions about burning down an old chicken coop with working water hydrant inside? The hydrant is the frost-free style and the water line has no shut offs and 2 other hydrants. This is at the neighbors, and they want to be able to use the hydrant for their garden after the old building is gone. Is there a way to protect the hydrant during the fire, or do they have to dig up the line and put a shut-off valve in and tear out the hydrant before burning down the old building? There really isn't a place to push the building into a burn pile somewhere else, and it is full of the previous owners junk. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

I want to build a a large bird cage, one that I can walk around in, something? like a chicken coop that I can sit in and play with them. If I decide to get chickens later will they beat up the smaller birds or do they live in harmony? Also will they freeze at night since it sometimes drops to 30 degrees at night? do i need to build my greenhouse in full sun? We live in California and are planning on building a premaculture chicken/greenhouse. The greenhouse on the south side of the coop. We are finding a difficult full sunny spot. We plan to grow herbs, tomatoes and lettuces in it . How much sun will our greenhouse actually need?
