How deep should a fox barrier be on a chicken coop? We are planning to build a chicken coop and run and note that it is recommended to place a solid barrier below ground level to prevent foxes and other predators from digging their way in. How far below ground level should the solid fox barrier be? ie how deep might they dig? Should we also place a chicken wire roof over the run as well or is that not necessary?

How much should laborers be payed to build a chicken coop? My husband and his friend are building a chicken coop for my husband's boss. The materials were all provided, and the concrete already laid. Even the tools have been provided. All they have to do is the actual construction, there is even an already existing chicken coop for them to copy. What I need to know, is how much should they be paid for the job? Its a fairly extensive structure, 44ft by 16ft, with two windows, a shingled, slanted roof, a door, aluminum siding, and a small insulated room off to the side. They are working an average of 10 hours a day, and we've estimated it will likely take appx 10 days to complete. What is this job worth?

And just recently my dad has become mean and wont help me build a chicken coop thats off the ground for my silkies. I dont want them on the ground bc every time i keep silkies in a pen like my other chickens, something eats/kills them. What I need to know i how to use a power saw. I know how to use a manual 1, Im scared of an electric, but a manual 1 would take to long to cut wood. Also i need help on how to use a drill. I have a very hard time putting screws in hard wood. Normally i keep my chickens on the ground, but with the fox numbers growing, and with them just attacked my chickens last month, i reall need pens off the ground. thanks.
How do you educate Chicken to enter their coop at night???? We have recently built a chicken run consisting of a coop on stilts (600mm high) which is entered by a ramp with footbars at 150mm spacing. The coop is contained within a fully enclosed area (frames with chicken wire) with is approx. 12 square metres. Upon purchaing 5 chicken (16 week old Marans) they have settled in remarkably well (providing 8 eggs in first 3 days) and during the daytime they appear happy to climb the ramp and indeed 1 of the hens actually used the nest box on the 3rd day. However at night they have not worked out that it would be prudent for them to enter the coop where there are 2 perches and the floor is covered with sawdust for their comfort. On the second night we physically picked them up and placed them in the coop where they stayed until morning (albeit with the door to the ramp left shut) On the third night it looked as though they would enter on their own accord. Alas, at dusk they huddled together at the base to the ramp. SUGGESTIONS PLEASE
Looking for chicken coop designs/images and want to know what birds can and can't be together? I'm wanting to build an enclosed coop that is off the ground and fenced in. The coop will probably be placed in an area with a large 8' chain link fence on 2 of the sides and a building on another. I'm mainly trying to figure out how to make a roof and the coop. I'm also wanting to know if all these birds can live in the same area: chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, pheasants, and maybe turkeys. I'd like to make a coop with seperate sections for each bird species. How big of a coop should I have for a small number 3-4 of each type of bird? I do like some of the coop pictures I looked at with the nesting area stuck out some in the back with a roof that lifts up to get to the nests. I'd like to find more pictures of the insides of coops especially for ducks. I assume they would have to be made different. I'm currently living with my bf and his parents on their farm. I have plenty of supplies and aggreed to build the coop myself if his father would buy the birds. Thanks for the replies. My bf's dad has had chickens and turkeys before but were free to roam the whole farm. We have to many cats around and everyone doesn't want the turkeys runnin loose since they got attacked by them. The guinea fowl and pheasants my bf's dad was thinking about them. I mainly prefer chickens and definitely ducks/geese. With the chain link fencing if I put a different type of wire (smaller holes) and dug down 1-2 feet and had a couple feet above the ground would that help avoid predators digging in and also reaching the birds? There are a few other farms around that raise different types of birds for pets that I can ask some information about the birds. As far as babies we will be removing them to an incubator. I was thinking about 5 nest boxes for chickens/ducks each. Probably have 2 females and 1 male each. I'll probably make the coop so I can add extra nests if needed. I'll tell my bf's dad about the other fowl so we can wait or build a seperate coop later on.
How much room per chicken? We're building a chicken coop that is 6 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 3 feet high. The coop will have an opening for the chickens to go outside all day, so they will pretty much just be locked in the coop at night. The outside area is going to be using about 150 feet of fencing, so we will probably have it 37 feet by 37 feet, or about 1300 square feet. We are wanting to get standard sized laying hens. What is a good number to get? Thanks
What size do you think for my chicken coop, for chickens to lay eggs & everything? Okay, I want to build my own chicken coop, I can't find any I like. I want to have a run as well, still don't know what Im going to make that out of.... Anyway, Ive had 12'x12' in mind, until I read that it would be very hard to transport..I need something I can move, we might move in a couple years, and I would want to take it with me...so do you think I should go smaller? I have 6 chicks now, and I want to store their food in their. Please share ideas. I just wanted a bigger area, so they will be happy, I'm already thinking about getting more as well, so I might expand my chicken tribe...I have NO idea how I'm going to build this, its like a shed....has to be made of pressure treated wood, has to have a frame...so if you have any websites that have good plans & detailed items needed list, that'd be great!
At what age do most chickens begin to lay eggs? I am interested in non-production or heritage breeds. A neighbor has chicks now, and has offered to keep them and feed them for me until they are ready to lay. Neither of us know how long this will give me to get the chicken coop built.

Where(website) can I learn some carpentry skills to help me build a chicken coop? Hello, there! We have some pet chickens in our backyard and we're very very happy with them. But I thought that I should build something for our feathered friends. But I tried to build a small coop for more chickens, but I kinda find it difficult - I can't even drive a nail into wood! I suck at carpentry, so I thought of learning some carpentry tips. Do you know a website where I can learn some carpentry so I can be prepared to build chicken things like a big feeder and a small coop? Thanks in advance!
In FarmVille, can you move a building (i.e. horse stable, chicken coop, house) once you build it? I JUST started FarmVille in the past week so I don't know much about it. I know you can move things like plots of plowed land for crops, picnic tables, bales of hay, animals, but I plan on expanding my land to the maximum someday and I don't want to build the free buildings I was given (a horse stable and two chicken coops to be specific) if I can't move them later on to fit my new, bigger plot of land. Can buildings be moved/rotated once built? Thanks!

Can anyone (Tammy R) give me some dimensions for a chicken coop that would be able to house 8-12 standard/largish breeds?Since i live in the north I need a coop that can accommodate these weather conditions. Also when I say dimensions i mean dimensions for EVERYTHING. nest boxes, run, henhouse, and anything else. All I want is a standard chicken coop so please don't give me the blueprints for some fancy shmancy chicken mansion. i live with a lot of space so don't worry about that.

Chicken Coops with Linoleum Floor? I am planning to build a small chicken coop (4 X8') and the plans call for a plywood floor which I was thinking of covering with linoleum in the hopes that it may make it easier to clean, disinfect or powerwash. I have some questions about burning down an old chicken coop with working water hydrant inside? The hydrant is the frost-free style and the water line has no shut offs and 2 other hydrants. This is at the neighbors, and they want to be able to use the hydrant for their garden after the old building is gone. Is there a way to protect the hydrant during the fire, or do they have to dig up the line and put a shut-off valve in and tear out the hydrant before burning down the old building? There really isn't a place to push the building into a burn pile somewhere else, and it is full of the previous owners junk. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
I want to build a a large bird cage, one that I can walk around in, something? like a chicken coop that I can sit in and play with them.
