Chicken Coop Designs Knowledge Base

Looking for chicken coop designs/images and want to know what birds can and can't be together? I'm wanting to build an enclosed coop that is off the ground and fenced in. The coop will probably be placed in an area with a large 8' chain link fence on 2 of the sides and a building on another. I'm mainly trying to figure out how to make a roof and the coop. I'm also wanting to know if all these birds can live in the same area: chickens, ducks, guinea fowl, pheasants, and maybe turkeys. I'd like to make a coop with seperate sections for each bird species. How big of a coop should I have for a small number 3-4 of each type of bird? I do like some of the coop pictures I looked at with the nesting area stuck out some in the back with a roof that lifts up to get to the nests. I'd like to find more pictures of the insides of coops especially for ducks. I assume they would have to be made different. I'm currently living with my bf and his parents on their farm. I have plenty of supplies and aggreed to build the coop myself if his father would buy the birds. Thanks for the replies. My bf's dad has had chickens and turkeys before but were free to roam the whole farm. We have to many cats around and everyone doesn't want the turkeys runnin loose since they got attacked by them. The guinea fowl and pheasants my bf's dad was thinking about them. I mainly prefer chickens and definitely ducks/geese. With the chain link fencing if I put a different type of wire (smaller holes) and dug down 1-2 feet and had a couple feet above the ground would that help avoid predators digging in and also reaching the birds? There are a few other farms around that raise different types of birds for pets that I can ask some information about the birds. As far as babies we will be removing them to an incubator. I was thinking about 5 nest boxes for chickens/ducks each. Probably have 2 females and 1 male each. I'll probably make the coop so I can add extra nests if needed. I'll tell my bf's dad about the other fowl so we can wait or build a seperate coop later on.

plan - design of a chicken coop (poultry house)? I am planning to build a chicken coop (poultry house) for chickens, guinea fowl and turkeys. I am thinking of 20 - 30 birds. Max temp 35C. thanks
Chickens- recipes, care, coop designs...? I want to get a chicken. Like I said, I want to get A chicken. I have enough room for a run that is 14 feet x 12.5 feet. That's enough for one. I am also going to get a coop- enough room for nights and 1 chicken, it will have to be smaller to conserve warmth, so only 2 feet x 2 feet with a perch. I either want to get a Jersey Giant hen or a Silkie hen. I will pay LOTS of attention to it. In the morning I would let it out of the coop, then give it a big breakfast (during the summer and a small one during the winter). Then I would pet it a bit before I go to school. When I get home, I will do homework outside while petting it (unless its cold, then I'll make trips and visit it) and a small dinner (and a big one during the winter). I think I want to make my own feed. I need a recipe, though. If not I will get a feed (that's a last option). What am I forgetting? I need help though and what I'll need to research before getting it. PS I am getting it when I get the coop built and fence put up, so... SOON!!!

how to build a chicken coop? these can't be bigger than 24'x24'. It should be able to keep eggs from cracking, also with water containers that will not putrefy, nor feed become moldy. Also it should have a method for easy cleaning that will not erode the floor of th coop and a natural air filtration system to eliminate odors. When is cold chickens must be kept warm when is hot they must be kept cold. And also the materials can't be too expensive. I know these sounds too specific but this is for a project and i need i ideas in how can i design a chicken coop that can meet these requirements. I Will Appreciate all the help Possible. Thanks. These project is for my Engineering class and yes my teacher might be crazy for asking all these.
Anyone with chicken coop experience? Opinion needed.? I have an 8x12 shed we are getting ready to convert into a chicken coop. After pouring over designs and ideas, I basically know how I want it laid out, but I walked past an old wooden china hutch we were going to junk and got a funny idea. Along with the normal roost and nest boxes, what if I put the hutch in there? It has 4 stair step type shelves on top, two drawers that could be pulled open and a cabinet beneath that could easily be divided into 2 nest boxes. Do you think the chickens would use this? It just sounds like a fun idea to me. Thanks

Can I use shredded paper in a chicken coop? Im looking at getting 3 chucks and have been looking into the various designs of coops,Obviously the new eglu cube would be great but the price is too much,so going for a traditional style with nesting boxes and good size run area etc...it seems to me the great feature on the eglu is the removable trays for cleaning purposes, and so plan to get hubby to make me some for the wood one I choose, but could we put shredded paper in the bottom to aid emptying or what would anyone with more experience than me suggest!?
Need suggestions on building a chicken coop!? I'm going to keep 10 chickens in my backyard. It's very expensive to buy a premade one, isnt it? Plz give me some suggestions or tips to make a one. What matirial? The design? The size?.... Thx in advance!

Is a 3 by 4 foot by 3 feet high chicken coop, not including the nest boxes, big enough for 6 laying chickens? I am going to be building a chicken coop (playhouse style) and was wondering if it will be big enough for 6 chickens. The coop will be 3 feet off the ground and will measure 3 ft long by 4 ft wide and 3 feet high (tall), not including the 2 nest boxes ( on the end). The remainder of the pen will be fenced in and will have 3 ft long by 4 ft wide, and 3 feet high under the coop and in front of the coop ( still one area) will be 5 ft long by 4 ft wide and 6 feet high. ps- if you don't understand the type of design then maybe you have heard of the Rothwell chicken coop. So in conclusion, will a 3 by 4 coop be big enough for 6 chickens????? please answer

New Coop Design and Location Problems? I'm building a new coop in the school holidays for my 6 chickens and a rooster, plus a separate house for the duck. In the future, I plan on buying two more ducks and three more chickens. Here are my questions: 1# How much room would you need for a large/run yard to home more than 12 chickens, without having problems with lack of grass and manure problems? 2# How to build a roost for a handicapped chicken? I have one hen who has a leg infection in her joint that is close to the hip, which we have tried to fix but it doesn't work with penicillin. She walks in a funny way and has trouble jumping onto her roost to sleep next to her sister. Any ideas on how to design one that would be suitable for her and the rest. 3# Any other tips, tricks, warnings and hints would be great! 4# How much room do you need for 13 standard/heavy chickens in a coop, and 3 ducks in another small house. P.S The 3rd question referred to both chickens and ducks.
I'm interested in raising/keeping chickens? Hello everyone! My question is one that has multiple parts. First a bit of background. I have always loved the Harvest Moon games, and similar games. I know it's not like the real thing, but the idea of keeping animals and having a farm has always been one I've enjoyed. Part of the reason I love minecraft right now so much is that it allows you to make a farm (I'm in the processes of making one right now... will need to find mods to reach its full potential, though... sorry if you have no idea what I'm talking about). Anyways, I was playing minecraft (a sandbox game...google/wiki it :D) and I was having trouble keeping my chickens in my yard. They kept jumping out of my fence, not exactly sure how, though. So, I decided to design and build a chicken coop in the game to keep them in, so there would be no chance of them getting out. As I was finishing up the chicken coop, it hit me. I really want to give this a try in real life. And searching around and such, I found out that a lot of people wanted to try it too. Anyways, I live in a neighborhood and have neighbors in all directions, close to my home. Would it be possible for me to raise/keep chickens in my backyard? Would there be laws that could keep me from doing it? What kind of chickens should I keep if I do decide to? Any suggestions on where to buy a chicken coop, or chicken coop design? What are the prices of feed? What stuff do they eat? Any links or general tips on how to go about everything? I'll be searching for this info myself after posting this, but I feel like I'm getting a more... "personalized" answer to all my questions if I ask directly like this.
what types of chickens do you recommend name lots please? im getting chickens and where can i get chicken coops or design plans online for free
How cold is too cold for Chickens? I'm building my first chicken coop here in Houston, TX and I was wondering how cold is too cold for chickens? I've done a lot of research so I feel like I have a good idea of what they're going to need but I'm not sure if the ventilation windows need to be able to close or if I can get away with an open vent window design covered with chicken wire. Any thoughts?

How would you make this work? (see description)? This is my Technology brief for this year's project: Design and make a door for a chicken coop which will automatically open during the day and close at night. I know to use an LDR for the day/night part, and a motor with PTB switches to open and close the door, but I don't know how to make the motor re-activate when the LDR resistance changes... any ideas?
I need help choosing a choosing a name for my design project? I am creating a modern and aesthetically pleasing CHICKEN COOP for my school major work. I need a name that is cute, but classy .. any ideas?
how much do you think it will cost to build a chicken house with an add on run for 6 chickens? i want to get an idea of about how much it will cost to build a chicken house with add on run like the Rothwell design with the coop above the ground and an area for them to roam around on the ground below and in front of the coop? i already briefly added it up and got that it will cost around $200 to $300 to build it from brand new material from Lowe's ( plywood sheets and 2x4's) and i know that the wire will cost about $25, so if you think that you have an idea for 6 chickens then please answer and tell me how much you think it will cost. thanks for reading and answering
what can fill my empty chicken pen (other than chickens...)? i have a a chicken pen about 3x3 metres and is surrounded completely with wire mesh (along top and sides and even going underneath the pen itself so absolutely nothing i don't getting in, gets in) and large coop box thing which was designed for use of almost every smallish outside pet. im looking for 2/3 pretty cool and interesting animals of the same species - i was thinking about two medium sized tortoise but then there is the hibernation side of things which could be a bit of a hassle. any other suggestions ? p.s i know by the description of the pen it sounds like a prison, but its not. There are small bushes at the sides, nice green grass cut to a suitable length. very, very shallow water baths for smaller animals in the corner, it really is a lovely coop :) it also has a small gate so it can open up into our main garden. something cool :)
Help!! I'm trying to convince my mom to let me hatch chicks... One Problem! 10 points to best answer? We live in a house and our back yard is kinda big, but apparently she doesn't know where we'd put a full grown chicken. [These words were disappointing because I was hoping chickenS] I've come up with a coop design and a few places we could put it in our yard : ( She basically said no right there! She's not keen on the idea... I've been good and stuff its just she doesn't want a chicken. Let alone plural. :(
Building a bird aviary question(s)? I am going to be building a small to medium sized aviary soon I know where im putting it I have designed it on google sketch up if anyone wants to see then email me. At the moment it is going to have a chicken coop in it too. I want to keep indian ringnecks (a pair to breed) obviously chickens (4 hens) and maybe some cockatiels (I may breed them as well). First of all will all those birds be able to live together? and if I have any breeding could the attack each other or if I have ringnecks and cockatiels breed could that cause trouble? I have had a baby cockatiel in my room for 2 weeks now I got him 1 week out of the nest he has a big cage and he has settled in well and is pretty tame. I wanted a ringneck to start with thats why I got a big cage so next year (going to buy a breeding pair of ringnecks from the pet shop) If I had some baby ringnecks from the breeding pair would it be ok to move my cockatiel in with another cockatiel for him to be friends with or mate with someday? If he bonded to the other cockatiel he would still be tame enough to handle right? Ok now building questions. I was just going to dig up the grass so the ground is dirt then use cheep straw to lay on the bottom so it is easy to clean and so we can compost it. I live in Dunedin in New Zealand we have had mice in our compost bins before and also a few in house from time to time during the year but not so much lately. Do I need to keep watch for holes or should I put the netting or something under it so they cant get in? Or will the chickens scare them away? IM pretty sure the design is good just got a few changes to make on is to make the chicken bit stick out the back so there is more room. I have a good covered bit for the birds but is it a good idea to make a bit of a wall so they can go back into it to sleep? I will be also adding on a nest box for the ringnecks and if I do breed cockatiels too then I will just buy one for them. I also need to know what to put in the aviary for the birds. I will go get some long and right sized pine perches for the birds do I need to do anything to them first if they are in a aviary? Im not sure what else to put I would add some toys and things to play with but what else? For water I was just going to have a big bowl on top of the chicken bit (its raised off the ground) and one of the ground for the chickens and change it everyday. Thats all for now if someone could email with help that would be nice :)
I want to get chickens, but I'm not sure if I have the right requirements? I have wanted to get birds for a while now, but every time there was always the possibility that we don't have the right environment. I was wondering: If I have two dogs, two cats, live on a medium sized plot of land, have neighbors, and live in Florida, should I get ducks or chickens? I know my neighbors wouldn't appreciate roosters very much, but I also know that ducks cost a lot of money. Also, which kind of them should I get? And how can I convince my parents? And any small coop designs that are cheap and easy would be great, too. Thanks!
Would you like Gecko with your egg's...........? Cook finds gecko in chook egg 15May08 EGGS-CEPTIONAL: Dr Peter Beaumont with the fully-formed gecko he found inside a supermarket-bought egg. Picture: JULIANNE OSBORNE A QUIET Sunday dinner has turned into an eggs-traordinary mystery. Dr Peter Beaumont, 60, was cooking Thai fishcakes for dinner when he found a fully formed gecko inside an egg shell. He believes the discovery may be a world first and may help solve a food poisoning puzzle. "I was cracking the eggs into a pan when I noticed one of them was all cloudy. "I looked at the shell and saw a tiny gecko.'' Dr Beaumont said the lizard had not got into the shell after he had discarded it because the reptile was embedded between the inner-shell and the egg's membrane. He said the gecko may have crawled into the chicken to feast on an embryo -- and got stuck. The egg then formed around the lizard. "If you open up a dead chook, you sometimes see the partly-formed eggs,'' he said. "The gecko could have been looking for a feed and got trapped.'' Dr Beaumont said eggs sometimes contained salmonella, a potentially fatal food poisoning often carried by other lizards. "Maybe this happens all the time,'' he said. "Maybe geckos regularly crawl inside chickens for a feed. "And this one was unlucky enough to get stuck in an egg.'' Dr Beaumont bought the egg from a Darwin supermarket. He took it to health experts yesterday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ads By GoogleAustralian Poultry Wiki Comprehensive online resource for commercial meat and egg production www.poultryhub.org Gotta Getta Gecko Gecko Phone Mobile Phone for Mobile Kids www.geckoworld.com.au Beautiful Feet by PedEgg Stop Wasting Money At Nail Salons PedEgg Removes Rough Callused Skin GlobalShopDirect.com.au Related Articlesweather Darwin Fine and sunny. The best man to quote in politics? A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. He inspires the power and energy to get it done. A society that has more justice is a society that needs less charity. Addiction should never be treated as a crime. It has to be treated as a health problem. We do not send alcoholics to jail in this country. Over 500,000 people are in our jails who are nonviolent drug users. Every time I see something terrible, it's like I see it at age 19. I keep a freshness that way. For almost seventy years the life insurance industry has been a smug sacred cow feeding the public a steady line of sacred bull. I don't think meals have any business being deductible. I'm for separation of calories and corporations. I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers. John D. Rockefeller wanted to dominate oil, but Microsoft wants it all, you name it: cable, media, banking, car dealerships. Let's not just look at it as taking votes away from Gore. Our support comes from a lot of people. Like sex in Victorian England, the reality of Big Business today is our big dirty secret. No presidential candidate should visit Las Vegas without condemning organized gambling. Once you don't vote your ideals... that has serious undermining affects. It erodes the moral basis of our democracy. Our founders did not oust George III in order for us to crown Richard I. People are stunned to hear that one company has data files on 185 million Americans. Power has to be insecure to be responsive. President Reagan was elected on the promise of getting government off the backs of the people and now he demands that government wrap itself around the waists of the people. Sanctions against polluters are feeble and out of date, and are rarely invoked. The corporate lobby in Washington is basically designed to stifle all legislative activity on behalf of consumers. The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers. The liberal intelligentsia has allowed its party to become a captive of corporate interests. The networks are not some chicken-coop manufacturing lobby whose calls nobody returns. The only difference between the Republican and Democratic parties is the velocities with which their knees hit the floor when corporations knock on their door. That's the only difference. The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun. There can be no daily democracy without daily citizenship. This (George W. Bush's) administration is not sympathetic to corporations, it is indentured to corporations. This country has far more problems than it deserves and far more solutions than it applies. Are we prepared to keep chickens? Some questions? I asked this last night, but unfortunately did not get any answers. My mom has a friend who is giving us some eggs that we can raise up into chickens. She gave a great and informative book that i'm reading. She also gave us an automatic egg turner and an incubator. What else do we still need? I know a coop. Can you give me some designs or maybe pictures of your own coop?! Are they loud? I know roosters are louder than hens. Thanks to everyone who answers.
