I'm thinking of upgrading my chicken coop any opinions on how good the eglu is? I've also seen a company called chicube which would supply ex-battery hens with the house itself (I wanted to re-home hens anyway so this is totally brilliant) their hen houses are a similar price to omlet's eglu and also made of easier cleaning material than the traditional wood like the eglu is. I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with the eglu or chicube, like are they as robust and as easy to clean, which is better? Many thanks

Can I use shredded paper in a chicken coop? Im looking at getting 3 chucks and have been looking into the various designs of coops,Obviously the new eglu cube would be great but the price is too much,so going for a traditional style with nesting boxes and good size run area etc...it seems to me the great feature on the eglu is the removable trays for cleaning purposes,and so plan to get hubby to make me some for the wood one I choose,but could we put shredded paper in the bottom to aid emptying or what would anyone with more experience than me suggest!?

Chicken Housing Prices? Ok, I'm in trouble. So, I am on holidays with my mum for four more weeks in America, and my dad and brothers are caring for them at home. In Australia, even if it is hot, the winter is really wet and horrible (that's why I wan snow instead) The area where my hens are now is all wet and boggy, and in the summer doesn't get any sun at all, another reason why there is nothing green in there. We are planning on getting/building a new coop for them in a different place in one of our paddocks, and here is where the problem comes in ... money. At the moment, I own 7 chickens and 1 duck (just lost a hen and a duck to a fox the other day) and I'm planning on housing the duck(s) separately, since it was a bad idea to keep them with the hens. I might be ordering 6 chicks and two more ducks in the summer, so the numbers will increase. I can't improve or move the coop in anyway, and it is horrible metal too. I said to my mum that if we build a big enough coop for them, that will take a veeerrryyy long time. Then I said a better idea was to go an buy one (1,000 + I think, for a big enough size) So what should I do??? I also have a bantam rooster (not mini, but fairly small)

Do chicken coops NEED litter/shavings? I'm planning on converting my garden shed into a chicken coop. It's made out of very durable and sturdy wood, and I'm debating on how to cover the bottom floor of it. Do I absolutely have to? Can I just leave the floor empty and clean out hen droppings with a mop or something? Or can I just put hay under the roasting area where chickens typically leave their little presents? If I have to then I guess I'll use pine shavings/hay...but I'm a bit concerned about the price. Also, should I use the deep litter method? I really don't want it to smell... Thank you!

I'm interested in raising/keeping chickens? Hello everyone! My question is one that has multiple parts. First a bit of background. I have always loved the Harvest Moon games, and similar games. I know it's not like the real thing, but the idea of keeping animals and having a farm has always been one I've enjoyed. Part of the reason I love minecraft right now so much is that it allows you to make a farm (I'm in the processes of making one right now... will need to find mods to reach its full potential, though... sorry if you have no idea what I'm talking about). Anyways, I was playing minecraft (a sandbox game...google/wiki it :D) and I was having trouble keeping my chickens in my yard. They kept jumping out of my fence, not exactly sure how, though. So, I decided to design and build a chicken coop in the game to keep them in, so there would be no chance of them getting out. As I was finishing up the chicken coop, it hit me. I really want to give this a try in real life. And searching around and such, I found out that a lot of people wanted to try it too. Anyways, I live in a neighborhood and have neighbors in all directions, close to my home. Would it be possible for me to raise/keep chickens in my backyard? Would there be laws that could keep me from doing it? What kind of chickens should I keep if I do decide to? Any suggestions on where to buy a chicken coop, or chicken coop design? What are the prices of feed? What stuff do they eat? Any links or general tips on how to go about everything? Would you shop at this store I'm opening? It is a grocery called "Roots" We sell all kinds of FRESH fruit, vegetables, grains, oils, herbs, beans and healthy diary products + eggs.(ONLY) There are no labels or brand names. and no meat or processed food, what so ever. The grains and nuts are in bins (like an animal feed store) and you scoop them and bag them yourself. At the checkstand everything is weighed... and prices are very cheap! There will also be a very SIMPLE website where you can look up every item sold at the store and there will be various cooking directions for it. as for the appearance... It will be a decent sized building with high ceilings and orginal urban influenced art covering the walls. and plank wood floors. plus really good music by local artists and CD's sold at the front . Outside, off to the side of the store will be a big garden. There will be fresh cut flowers sold and a chicken coop providing fresh eggs. There will also be an eco friendly kitchen supply section (pots+ pans+ tea kettles+ water pipes, etc..) In addition, There will be a Medical Marijuana Health Clinic. This is just an idea.. HS: Belated, did you ride today? This is mainly for arburbulalalala. But, everyone is welcome to share their stories on today's riding adventures. Sadly, I did not ride :( I woke up, fed the horses, cleaned the chicken coop, started a few loads of laundry, and then filled up feed containers. THEN..I went to the feed store where I got Luna a new bucket since she likes to destroy EVERYTHING I get her. Then my mom finally decided to introduce me to the coolest place on earth. http://www.tricountyfeeds.com/ They have all sorts of colors for halters, saddle pads, etc. I have never been so overwhelmed, mainly by the prices (which, in reality aren't that bad, but I'd never spend that much!), but it was fun! Then I went home, groomed Luna, fly sprayed everyone. Then I went to work and had to do sawdust, that was not fun in this lovely 95+ degree, humid weather. Then I went back home and fed the horses and then I came home. And my dad needed help moving our two stall duck barn. (There are two of them, so 4 stalls total). Luckily my boyfriend was there to help. But, the mob boss of the ducks, decided he was not going into his new stall, so I had to pick him up. Then he bashed my nose with his ulna (I swear it was broken cuz I have never had that much pain in my face before [I play basketball and volleyball and have been elbowed in the nose quite a few times]) AND he clawed a vein on my wrist. So yeah...so much fun. Tomorrow I teach a lesson, then am gunna do ring work with the QH and ride Lulu! :) Monday I'm taking the paint jumping. :) Super excitteeed! move in with parents after divorce? Over a year ago I managed to find the guts to get a divorce from an abusive pathalogically lieing cheating spouse. It took me 23 years of his mental games and attemps of sucide that wasted my life away. I have 2 grown children out of the house and 2 teens at home, He left me destititute. I''m on disability due to a health probeblem and cannot depend on the smaill ssi monthly wage, and I'm in forclosure. Part of him agreeing to give me a divorce was no alimony-no liability to make house payments -no higher education contribution. Just a measly 100- for the 2 children every 2 weeks. Now faced with this forclusure deadline, my parents have helped me on and off, but with a price. They want to control me, and what my children do, They tell me I casued the "damage"and therefore I only have them now. They are almost senile and that's why i don't fight back, I always say "thank you" and I appreciate the help, but I feel I would be taking 10 step back intstead of forward. Sheriff’s deputies arrested three people in connection with Aguilar’s slaying and the possible killing of his suspected hit man. She is sweet but no overly sweet if that makes sense. She would prefer to eat than anything else. She used to see me-with a halter and lead- come into the pen she would trot off for a while before she stopped a few feet away and let me catch her, now she just keeps eating. Or comes to me if I have grain. She is a real grass-anything green or brown- grabber and it's a pain because she is really well trained and i don't like having to use a bit on her- also because I'm afaid I might be hard on there mouths, but I'm not sure.) so I use only a halter, and it usually works unless she stops to eat. And I like to ride bareback so grass reins are out of the question. She also doesn't like to go faster. you really have to kick her to get going. Her gaits are the bounciest ever. I left a note at the Humane Society- about a block from where I picked her up at. (I'm thinking an escape artist.) No one replied and there was no 'Lost Dogs' in the paper. I've kept her. She's a good dog, but likes to run as well. But she does come back after about a half an hour. They had been inside dogs until mom kicked them out about 6 months ago. Right now the dogs are in a fenced in area with an old gutted chicken coop. I take them for walks daily, but they don't get to really run-unless the escape. It scares me that they are going to get hit one of these days and I'm not really sure what to do with them. I live less than a quarter mile away from a busy highway and railroad. And the way the property is set up there really isn't a way to make their area any bigger for them. I've alwasy wanted a dog that doesn't need to be tied up or fenced in. One that doesn't take off. One that might bark at someone unknow when they pull in and not lick them to death when they get out. I used to have a dog that was like that but he sadly passed away a few years ago and the replacement... aren't what I'm looking for. How to get out and see the world? Hey so this is a really broad question...and it may be a little long so bear with me here. My mother was telling me the other night how she spent the summer when she was 15 in Israel working her ass of in a kibbutz, plowing feilds, digging soil, cleaning chicken coops, and spending about 3 hours a day in school learning Hebrew. I REALLY want to do this-spend one entire summer working, learning a language, and really putting some blood and sweat into it in a foriegn country. Does anyone know of a program or oppertunity where this would be possible? should i make a chicken coop or buy one? and if i do buy one where should i get it from i plan to get 12-20 chickens. i'm just trying to find the cheapest price.
