Thermostat for poultry incubator? I am building an incubator for poultry eggs. I have a well insulated plastic box which will accommodate about 50 eggs and have fitted a small computer fan to circulate the air. I am using light bulbs as a heat source and have tried a number of different thermostats in an attempt to maintain an even temperature. I have tried a hot water storage tank thermostat, aquarium heater stat, I have bought two thermostat kits widely advertised on eBay as suitable but without success. I need one that that will maintain a steady temperature of 38.5 degrees. Everything I have tried so far has too wide a margin between shutting off and cutting back in again. Any suggestions?

But i would rather not have to bring so many so I was wondering if you guys and gals know how to make an incubator for ice (to keep them cold) so they wont melt. I have been looking on multiple websites, but they all say "how to make an incubator for poultry". The science fair is on May 12th and I would like to be finished soon but I don't have much time! Any other ideas are welcome also! So far, I have the Ice Babies (ice lenses) in a plastic container with ice cubes in the botom, a cloth, the ice babies, another cloth, and ice cubes on top! * 15 minutes ago * - 4 days left to answer. Additional Details And We are NOT allowed to have a fridge or cooler there so i need to make something small! 8D

What's the differance? What's the differance between a forced air incubator and a still air incubator? (Used for poultry)
Is this considered normal or what, answer please?!? I have 6 day old chicken egg I've been keeping warm in a homemade incubator I made myself using a plastic box, towels, a heating pad and a small container of water for humidity. I turn it over and check the temp like most poultry websites recommend. But thing is when I candled it today, I noticed the inside of the egg has gotten darker and the faint lines inside are somewhat darker and more pronouned. Also, there appears to be some type of dark(almost black) spot in the center of the yoke. Also there's some small black lines coming out of the edge of the yoke. I know there's a possible chance this egg is fertile but is what I'm seeing normal after having an egg for 6 days? I know that by the 5th day you can see the embryo developing but I wanted to hear what someone who's owned or raised chickens has to say about my description.
is keeping chickens in the UK cheap? i want to have 15-20 chickens eventually, at the moment i have only got 5. but when i move too another house, how much will it cost to build a large run, buy a house and all of the chickens, i will probably start out with 10 crossbreeds because there cheap, and then hatch some purebred chicks in an incubator and introduce them to the flock and expand that way. but how much does it cost to start it, and then keep it. and how many poultry birds do you have?
Before During and after chick incubation, i need help with that? first time im going to hatch myself some chicks, im going to buy this incubator http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-BRINSEA-MINI-ECO-INCUBATOR-10-EGG-POULTRY-CHICKENS_W0QQitemZ260535017060QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry?hash=item3ca918de64 any opinions on that? and during what do i do, i understand igotta turn em around every 8 hours but what do i do with water and crap. after, do i keep em in there, if i do what tempreture and etc i absoulty thank whoever answers my question from my heart. thank you so much
Do You Know About Chicken Incubating? i'm doing a poultry badge and one of the requirements is that you have to describe the construction of and incubator and know how it works. will you be able to help me on this? Thanxz
How can i tell if my chicken is a rooster? In my animal science class we are doing our poultry unit and we have an incubator in class. I wanted to bring in some of my chickens eggs but i am not sure we have a rooster. We have one White Cornish Rock chicken and "it" doesn't lay eggs. It has a bigger crest on top of his head and its a little redder than the hens. It is slightly bigger just enough to stand out but not to much bigger. However he doesn't crow and it has no spurs. It once tried to crow but we weren't sure there was any noise because he was to far away. It looks a lot like a rooster. Other than the missing spurs and it's tail feathers aren't very much longer. They are all about 9 to 11 months. I was wondering if he was maybe a late bloomer or something, or maybe she is just a hen that can't lay eggs. If anyone knows that would be helpful. I am unable to put any pics up, sorry. All of the others lay eggs. If anyone could help me out I would be very grateful. I need to know so I don't waste my teachers time and space in the incubator. Thanks
a few questions about Hatching chicken eggs? I'm planning to buy a small incubator to hatch some of my bantam eggs. But I have never done it before... this is they type of thing I want. (I refuse to spend nearly £100 extra for an automatic turner!) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Novital-7-Egg-Incubator-/400227843774?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item5d2f703ebe#ht_528wt_905 1. How do you control Humidity? 2. What temperature should they be kept at? (In C. and F.) 3. When they hatch, how long before I should take them from the incubator? Should I keep a heat lamp where I put them? Any other pointers would be wonderful :) I am willing to turn them, I am only looking at a small one, I only plan to hatch one lot, that way I can make sure I can give them a home. Then I will sell it second hand. I know I will lose money from it so I don't want it to be too expensive :)
What to do with an incubator? My aunt is comign to vist me in September with an old incubator. She knows i love animals so she is giving it to me as a gift. Me and my friend wanted to incubate a duckling but both our neiborhoods wont let you have poultry. We think it would be fun and take care of the duckling but maybe take it to a farm to grow up, where we can vist? What do you think? (Please no; "Just dont do it, you'll ruin the ducks life" because me and my friend are mature and love anials so we wouldnt do anything to hurt them.)
Chicken owners only!... Can anyone give me advice?!? I have 6 day old possibly fertile chicken egg. I've been to a few poultry websites to find out about incubating it. I've been keeping it a homemade incubator I made using a plastic box, towels, a heating and a small container of water for humidity. I candled the egg today and here's a description of what I saw: Its gotten darker, the faint lines that are in it are darker and a bit more pronounced and I've also seen a dark(almost black) spot on the yoke. There's also some dark lines on the edge of the yoke and the air cell on the end of the egg is somewhat bigger then it was earlier this week. This question is for chicken owners or breeders only, can anyone give me any overall advice about what I've just wrote? Also if the egg I have hatches what other signs should I look for other then when the egg gets VERY dark on the inside and it starts moving during the process? I know I can go to various poultry sites for help but right now I'm looking at other options. Also If I forgot to add this then, yes I do candle with a flashlight, also I've heard the egg feels lighter over time and it has been feeling that way lately!
If my hen lays a fertilized egg and I find it cool (temp wise) can it still be incubated? I got my silkie rooster a silkie hen and they mate all the time so I know the egg is fertilized. I have had her two days and have gotten an egg everyday since we picked her up. So in this scenario, I go outside to their coop/run and find an egg. I touch it and it is cool so I run it inside and stick it in the nice, warm incubator. Will it hatch or does it have to be still warm from where a chicken has just layed it? I don't have the incubator yet, and am waiting until Christmas to ask for one (I'm 14) And the model I am wanting hold 70 chicken eggs and is 150 dollars. I only have one pair of silkies but am hoping to branch out and add more to my poultry family :) Thanks for the advice! I will pick best answer!
