If a recipe calls for fresh ginger, can I use ground ginger? The recipe is for Asian Crockpot chicken.?
I read that ground ginger may be sweeter...does it really make a difference? How about minced or sliced ginger...can I buy it that way?

- I always use ground ginger in recipes that call for fresh ginger. I live in no-wheresville, so stores just don't have fresh ginger.
- no you can not! the fresh ginger will give a totally different flavor and texture to the dish
- yes by all means
- Fresh anything is always better, though you can use dried and it should be fine.
- Yes of course you can substitute ground ginger for fresh.
- Being a professional chef myself, it is definitely safe and OK if you do use it but put half of the ginger in so no one notices.
- Yes, but only use 1/2 as much ground ginger. Bert
- Yes, you can substitute ground ginger, but it's always best used in baking. When a recipe calls for 'fresh ginger,' I would use it. It's readily available in the supermarket, or local asian store. Nothing compares to fresh ginger IMOP; especially in Asian dishes. However, to answer your questions, if you're in a pinch, ground ginger is second best in recipes like yours, and I imagine will turn out well, though not as good as it would with fresh ginger. Also, I have never seen minced or sliced ginger for sale in the grocery stores. If you can, just go to your local store in the produce section and buy the fresh ginger....it's not expensive at all. Depending on how much is called for in your chicken recipe, just break off a piece at the store and it should be fine. Good luck on your dish! Sounds yummy!
- It wont taste the same. Fresh ginger is much better. Ginger is so cheap like 35 cents a root. A must have for a dish. You can buy it mince, in a jar.
- If its a crockpot thing it should be ok. gingers ginger innit. but a stirfry might be a different matter.
