Can I really put raw chicken in a crockpot and have it be safe to eat?
I am newly married and recieved a slow cooker for my wedding... some of the recipes i've looked at seem to imply that I just throw the chicken in raw with all the vegetables.... is this really safe considering salmonella and all? or should I cook the chicken first before putting it in the crockpot?

- Just wash the chicken first, then add it to the crockpot with the other ingredients and liquid. It's perfectly safe.
- Yes,. clean it and add with the other ingrediants
- As long as the chicken comes to a boil, it will be quite safe. I am not a fan of cooking poultry for a long time in a crockpot however, the "rubber" factor is really brought out by long, slow boiling. Best wishes!
- Don't worry, it is totally safe. I do it all the time. As long as you cook the chicken thoroughly (until there is no more pink), it is safe. Usually you should cook it for at lest 4 hours in the crockpot for that to be the case. But if you still want to cook it before-hand, then don't put it in until the last hour or so, or it will get tough.
- the only way its safe is if you cook for the right amount of time. I've cooked chicken in the slow cooker many times and nothing has ever happened to me. usually you cook it for 8 -10 hours. good luck. buy some slow cooker cook books there wonderful
- yes you can as long as you clean it good first put it in the crock pot add liquid add a couple of chicken bullion cubes for more flavor cook on low for a least 4 to 5 hours
- Hi.....Oh, yes, it's perfectly safe. I do it all the time. Just keep in mind to always wash chicken with cold water before cooking. Chicken can be great cooked in a crock-pot but I wouldn't recommend using chicken breast simply because it cooks up tough. U can put chicken breast in a crock pot but it's just better using other cooking methods. All other chicken part's turn out quite nice in a crock pot. Don't worry if all the meat comes away from the bones. That's natural when u have cooked meat for a long time; simply discard the bones. Good luck!!!>>>.Zeta
- It doesn't matter if it's raw when you put it in, just as long as it's not raw when you take it out. Slow cookers work over a long time and yield a much more tender product. Enjoy
- Yes, just make sure that you cook it for the recommended time and that slow cooking is one of the main reasons crockpots are so effective and popular.
- it's perfectly safe! It's just like throwing a roasting chicken in the oven raw..it's just that the slow cooker cooks it low and slow for longer times, making it fall-apart tender. I've used mine for years and have never once had any problems with it, and i use mine almost every other day!
- Yes, just make sure its a good quality one before u start,
