What is the English word for the food given to chicken at poultry farms?

  8. Feed. Another word you may find useful is "scratch" which is the cheapest type of chicken feed, thrown on the ground to free roaming birds. More intensively raised birds are given a pellet feed.

In Modern English the word scratch is usually a verb, but in Middle and Elizabethan English it was also a noun, meaning a wage, an allotment or allowance. By extension you can see that it could mean poultry food since food is "given" to the birds. Incidently, the archaic menaing of scratch is the origin of the modern slang term, scratch = money!
