  1. its quite expensive and the coops need to be very very big
  2. Better to just simply eat them
  3. You dont need to spend a lot of money , you can build your own coup as i did , as long as the have enough room to perch and lay they will be happy . I have 8 hens and one cockeral , one of my coups is about 2 metre sq and the other slightly bigger , but my hens run free all day , they are not in a run , if you are keeping them in you need a large run or a coup you can move . banties are about a fiver each if you get them as pullets ,I would recommend blackrocks if you want good layers , and if they are gonna be free range you dont need to pull out as much for feed . mail me if you want more info Di xx
  4. i have just bought bantam eggs on ebay, a mix of 6 for £6 or so, and i am incubating them, that way you can have them hatch and have them be used to you from being babys. Make your own incubator, or if you have a bit of money for it, you can by the r-com 3 egg incubator on ebay for £60 or so. Bantams need only a few meters squared, you can also buy a lovely little coop for 3 chickens.. heres some links. Good luck with your chickens, they are brilliant! :) http://cgi.ebay.ie/NEW-R-Com-Auto-Egg-Incubator-w-Humidity-EXTRAS_W0QQitemZ270207949735QQihZ017QQcategoryZ66905QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p1638.m122 http://www.omlet.co.uk/shop/shop.php
  5. They're expensive, but try ebay, and DON'T EAT THEM.......
  6. It actually dont cost too much. You need a fenced in yard or area with that. And shelter.like an iglu or doghouse. Make sure u put straw in it in winter. And they have a box to lay eggs in. The feed is at tractor supply stores, scratch corn for 9 bucks. Well. if you have a coop with 2/3 chickens in it it should be 12ft by 24 ft. if you have a small yard like me u can make a pen thts safe from preditors(use chicken wire to make a arrier at biottom of cage)I let my chickens and my ducks who stay in same pen with them out in the grass, they always come back in the coop. Make sure u do research, any other Qs ask me bethbethani@yahoo.com
  7. cost will depend on where you get them and how old.. I had bought 5 chicks 1week old for $7 Canadian.. adult birds were about $10-$40 each.. this was at an auction upkeep is low.. you can feed them some veges from your yard, and pick up the ones your local store is gonna throw out for cheap or even free.. yes you need Chicken Food too.. but this will help also you need GRIT and SHELL (often added to the feed) check this site for more info http://www.gomestic.com/Pets/Unusual-Pets-Chickens.76299
  8. Not sure of the cost of the birds but food wise a big sack of layers pellets is around£5 and a big sack of mixed corn around the same and that will last our 4 hens a month, and along with treats like potato peel and table scraps that is all they need. They will need a sleeping hut and a run quite big maybe 6ft by 8ft run for 2 or 3.hope this helps.x
  9. I have a City Biddy Hen House and could not be happier! It is cute, mobile, cheap, and easy to build! PLUS the website has lots of chicken info! http://www.UBuilderPlans.com
  10. Oh!! I love chickens...especially silkies! if you are only planning to get 2 or 3 make sure to only get ONE rooster (they tend to fight). The space doesnt need to be that big at all. 5 feet is plenty! go to www.murraymcmurrayhatchery.com its great! Good Luck! HAVE FUN
