- IN A PET SHOP?
- look in the yellow pages under chickens or incubators see what you can find out or call around to the pet shops see if they have any info for you.
- Well, you won't be needing an incubator if you have one chicken. You should feed her ( or is it a cockeral ? ) a mix of mixed corn and layers pellets. Go for GM free or Veggie Soc approved ( from the "Smallholder" range ) feeds as these do not have animal protiens in them You need to go to a "smallholder" shop for water fountains and food hoppers. S/he's need shelter, protected from foxes/rats/stoats etc, wood shavings, a night perch and free access to roam during the day. A drink mineral enhancer would help. As would a grit mix. Most farm suppliers will have all this stuff for you. You need to be around at dawn and dusk to let her/him out and lock them up. S/he should also have companions of similar weight and age, although not necessarily from the same breed. It also sounds like you need to buy some poultry keeping books
- A farmer's co-op should have these items in supply.
- You can find the incubators at lacompras.com. Here's the link: http://lacompras.com/egg_incubator.html Good Luck!
- Please buy more than one chicken, they are such sociable creatures. I brought this months grow your own magazine (march 2008) on page 92 it lists 6 of the best incubators, starting at £89.00 right up to £1050.00. Some of the websites listed are; ascott.biz ph 0845 130 6285 or poultryproducts.co.uk ph 0845 090 0560. go to the web site of the poultry club uk, they are a fabulous source of info, or even better, rescue some cage birds, go to Battery Hen Welfare Trust, that is the best wesite of them all.
