How do you tell if a chicken egg is fertilized?

My son is 8 years old and he has started raising show chickens. We have now got an incubator to hatch some eggs ourselves. How can you tell the fertile eggs from the un fertile?

1. If I'm remembering correctly put the egg above a light source (flashlight works best) and if you seen the yolk and then a circle looking thing in the yolk with a spot in it its fertilized. Unfertilized eggs will just have the yolk. Hope I am remembering right! Good luck!
2. You can't for a few while. Once the embryo develops for a few days, you can see it if you hold the egg up to a light.
