Chook Me!

is there a reason for chicken eggs being different colors?

there are about 40 eggs in the incubator and they are different colors does that determine there gender or wieght or size or something and the eggs are all different sizes too does that mean one chicken will be smaller then the other?

  1. It just depends on the kind of chicken that laid them. For example, the white eggs you usually get at the grocery store are laid from white chickens, and darker eggs are laid by darker chickens. The size most likely just depends on the variety of hen that laid the egg.
  2. The color and size is usually just in relation to the breed of chicken that laid them. Color doesn't indicate sex, and if they're drastically different in size, I would assume different hens laid the eggs.
  3. This sure is quite an interesting phenomenon! lol Different breeds of chickens lay different eggs.....however it isn't determined by the color of the chicken either. You can actually tell by the color of the earlobe! :) Chickens with white earlobes lay white eggs and brown or red earlobes lay different colors depending on the breed. Here is a link you can find out what color eggs come from what chickens. Just click on a name and under egg facts it gives the color and frequency of laying. http://www.mypetchicken.com/chickenBreeds.aspx Araucanas and Ameraucanas lay the blue and green ones and many breeds lay the brown or white ones. The size of the egg is determined by the age of the hen that laid it. Younger chickens lay eggs more often but they are smaller, while older chickens lay larger eggs but not as often. The gender and weight are not determined by the color or even size of the egg. An eggs size does not neccessarily mean it will or will not hatch. Sometimes some of the biggest eggs will not hatch or vice versa. A chick may emerge smaller from a smaller egg but could grow up to be twice as large. Whew I think that covers it all lol good luck!
  4. above post was close but chickens with that lay white eggs have white ears and red earlobes mean brown eggs. The brown eggs vary in color depending on the breed and the chicken. Size depends on age and cycle of the laying season. Some breeds always lay small and others lay mostly large. There are even some chickens that lay green and blue eggs! To take a guess on the sex a rounder egg usually makes a hen and the pointy eggs tend to be roosters. This is not 100% positive but will prove to be accurate most of the time if they are distinctly pointed or round.
