Chook Me!

Can roosters be trained or disciplined to crow and fight less?

My 3 baby chicks all tourned out to be males so - no eggs. However they do eat centipedes, fertilize regularly, keep the weeds down and are generally entertaining except for crowing at inappropriate hours.

  1. They usually crow due to seeing light, can be any source - mine used to crow when they saw my bathroom light go on! I moved them into a roost & locked them in overnight & my problem was fixed. Hope this helps!
  2. Roosters crow whenever they feel like it. I work nights sometimes, and I can pull in my driveway and hear someone wake up and crow out in the barn at... 3 am!! It's not only daylight, they also crow anytime they're awakened. If you have multiple roosters, they will crow competitively, and they will also fight, even without a hen around. My advice would be, unless you plan on expanding your flock enough to accomodate 3 roosters with at least 6-12 hens, then consider getting rid of 2 of them and finding a couple of hens to replace the boys. In addition to having the best natural pest control in the world and free fertilizer, a couple of hens would provide you with fresh eggs as well (and maybe some chicks if you decide to let them brood and hatch).
