Chook Me!

is there any way of cooking chicken wings so they are edible for dogs??

i bought some chicken wings the other day but i didn't use all of them so i was wondering if i could cook them for my dogs so i wouldn't waste food. i know that if you cook chicken bones they get too brittle for dogs to safely eat. but i have this can food that has a chicken drummlets that were cooked in a certain way and they literally dissolve then i touch it with the spoon. is there anyway to cook the chicken so it's safe!!? thanks

  1. No, they are too bony, you should not give chicken wings to dogs, they can and will splinter in their little stomachs....if it is boneless chicken, then boil till very tender, but only if it is boneless. no chicken bones no turkey bones no pork bones all of these will splinter........no matter how much cooked, still splinters....
  2. no pork chop bones oh god thats a new one on me glad you said so
  3. If you pressure cook them in water they will get so soft that they will fall apart. That is probably what is in the canned food. If still not completely soft enough, run them through a grinder.
  4. They are edible in full when they are raw. If you cook them, you have to tear off the meat for the dog and discard the bone. Raw bones do not splinter.
  5. No. Dont cook them. You are better throwing them out to be safe. Ive given my dog raw chicken wings and necks since he was 8 weeks old, they are fantastic for dogs RAW. The bones are full of highly absorbable minerals, and a dogs stomache acid will break the bone down in one hour. When cooked it doesnt break down at all, even when its fully soft due to pressure cooking the minerals cannot be absorbed and their may still be splinters in them. I give my dog old chicken also, old meat is completely safe for dogs. Same as digging up an old bone and eating it. A dog will NEVER get sick from e,coli etc. Let youre dog decide if he wants to eat it raw, if not throw it out.
  6. RAW IS BEST!!!!!
  7. The only way to do this safely is to cook the chicken and then strip the bones of the meat and feed your dog the meat only. All cooked bones can be harmfull to dogs because they tend to break off in sharp edges which can be very damaging to intestines. Cartilidge is safe because it is digestable. I wouldn't like to think about what chemicals are used to break down bones in dog food. Bones have no nutritional benefit, unless they are raw for your dog to knaw on for his teeth. Feed a quality dog food and if you want to spoil him a bit, cook some pet mince with vegies and rice and a bit of gravy, he will like that more than a crusty cooked chicken bone.
  8. Whether you can give the raw chicken wings to your dog is still a matter of controversy. Some say yes, some say no, if the bones get stuck in your dog, it can cause internal bleeding or blockage which will be very painful. Make sure the wings are still fresh and you can do one of the following: 1. De bone them raw and give them to your dogs 2. Cook them in boiling water and then de-bone it for your dogs and give when it's not too hot. You should NEVER give cooked bones to your dog and if the can food really has cooked bones, no matter how samll the pieces are- use another brand. There is no way of cooking something with bones to make the bone tender. For the benefit and health of your dog- NEVER give them cooked bones!
  9. Cook the wings and take out the bones! This is a bit of work but then you are happy as you didn't waste the meat and it is safe for your dog. RAW meat is not good for dog.. I had the experience once!
  10. I thought this was an interesting topic because my great grandma, God rest her soul, used to keep her pomeranian on a strict Church's fried chicken diet. Needless to say, he was the most spoiled rotten dog on the planet. Anyway, its okay to feed the dog cooked chicken as long as you debone it. Chicken bones and other poultry are more hallow (an adaption that allows them to fly) therefore the bones are very brittle and can splinter. Pork bones are also brittle so those are not good either.
  11. Your dogs will be able to eat raw chicken wings - my dogs love them.
  12. Boil them, then take all the meat off. Don't give your dogs the bones, they will splinter.
  13. Is your dog a puppy or older? First off, your vet should have information on 'natural diets for dogs.' It is somewhat controversial...kind of like vaccines for children. It is thought that starting a dog off with raw foods (including chicken) will help develop a Resistance to such problems as ecoli, giardia, etc. I was concerned about these issues when my Vizsla was a pup because I hike with her in the back country and she drinks from streams on a pretty constant basis. But getting to the root of your question, according to the info I got from my vet, dogs can digest WITHOUT bones splintering if the chicken is raw (again, start with out with a puppy...not a grown dog because they will not have the immunity to the bacteria). Cooked chicken bones should NEVER be giving to a dog.
  14. Yeah, don't cook it at all. If you want to give your dog a real treat that's very healthy for them, throw it a raw chicken neck and the chicken back. Heck, throw the whole chicken to your dog.
