Chook Me!

What type of chicken bones should my puppy be eating?

I've been advised that it's healthy for my dog to be eating chicken bones, but what kind? Cooked or uncooked? Some people have been telling me to be feeding it cooked, yet some other people tell me to feed it uncooked chicken bones. I don't know which kind! My parents tell me it's vital for my dog to be eating chicken bones, as it provides lots of nutrients, and believe me, they're quite stubborn and refuse to not feed it chicken bones. Help!? Cooked or uncooked?

  1. Uncooked - raw. Cooked bones are brittle and splinter and can cause serious problems. http://www.barfworld.com/html/barf_diet/barfdiet_specific.shtml http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AphZs.54AgUCmFlg.yBJzYcjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20070309142804AAlPMGu http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgoN1wzCkNdG87ao5KPZ694jzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20070930225526AAjPV4u ADD: Lil Mizz Pinki: STOP lying! 2. NONE AT ALL!!!! chicken bones and other small animal bones splinter and can cause the dog to choke!! if he swallows the splinters it could rip holes in his digestive organs!!! DO NOT GIVE HIM CHICKEN BONES!!!!!!!!!
  3. Chicken bones can be dangerous for a puppy or any dog. the bones are so small that they can become lodged in the throat and can be so sharp as to puncture it as well. Be extremely careful about that!
  4. nonononono chicken bones splinter, and cut up ur pets intestines :(
  5. I think its best to not feed them chicken bones at all, because they can get chocked on them. Chicken leg bones are the worst because they splinter when chewed.
  6. um... i would say cooked as the bones would be softer, I'm assuming that you have a big dog because i wouldn't suggest feeding ur dog chicken bones if he was a chihuahua or something just as small
  7. You really shouldn't feed your dog chicken bones at all. Like the above post said, they can easily splinter and can cause internal trauma including going through the stomach, which will kill your puppy because all of the acid in the stomach will start to leak out and it can not be fixed. It just isn't a good risk to take.
  8. None! Chicken bones are small and splinter easily. They can get lodged in your dogs throat. I thought it was okay to give my dogs bones, too. My vet warned me against it. Dogs should get their nutrients from food appropriate for them. You can buy bones that are flavored and that are specific for your dog.
  9. Do not feed your puppy chicken bones. They should never have chicken bones.
  10. you should NOT feed your puppy chicken bones! they can't digest them properly, maybe buy him one of those giants meat bones from petsmart for puppy treats that are good for his teeth.
  11. NO cooked bones. Only RAW. If yoo want to feed the puppy chicken make sure its only the raw Wing. Anything else is brittle and can break off and lodge in the puppy's throat! Also ham bones are bad for yoor dog. Cooked or raw never feed him/her these. Yes yoor parents r right. Bones are good for giving yoor puppy nutrients so feed him all yoor scraps before cooking them =] Good Luck
  12. You do not want to feed, dogs chicken bones. They splinter very easy. And it only takes one bone and your dog is in big trouble.
  13. Some one is fibbing to you. Chicken bones are the worst. they are thin and splinter easily..that;s bad for your pup. If you use a non grocery store brand dog food your pup will get all the nutrients he needs. Ask your parents to show you in writing rather than "We just know" and check with your vet. Makes a difference as to the type. Give a chicken bone to a Lab and zip, it's gone. Give the same bone to a smaller dog and you could have problems. I think you are just asking for trouble. It is not "vital" I have been a dog owner for years. I'm 62 and raised many dogs and never have I fed them chicken bones. Now I supplement with cooked chicken cause dogs do need meat but bones?. nope
  14. chicken bones do not make your dog healthier, i would now because i am a vet and i am having to remove bones from dogs mouths and stomachs every week at my pratice, cook or uncooked your dog will choke and may even die because of his young age do not feed him them. if you want to give him a bone go buy a big one from your nearest pet store tell your parents that if the feed your dog chicken bones it will choke and could die hop i could help x
  15. Uncooked necks and the wing tips.
  16. my grandfather feeds his dog chicken, but he boils it first! so i would say cooked.although he does not feed the bones just boiled chicken!that dog is very small if that makes a difference?the dog just goes crazy for the chicken. it is hilarious!!!! he says no chicken bones for any dog!!!!
  17. Raw chicken bones are safe for a puppy. They do not splinter and are easily digested and pliable. My dog has been eating them since he was 8 weeks old and eats them to this day. Raw chicken bones are a great way to get minerals and to strengthen their digestive system. A healthy digestive system will dissolve raw chicken bones in around an hour. My vet is also a nutritionist and she gets everyone into raw feeding their dogs and cats. I started on raw chicken wings and necks. I supervised at first until I was confident he was O.K with them. Your parents are correct. And remember to make any changes to the diet gradual until your pup is used to eating them. Good Luck! 19. roar chicken bones
  20. chicken bones are very bad for your pup dont listen to people say it ok....... do you want a big vet bill or a dead dog? :) i got 5 thumbs down for telling the truth again....... EDIT: IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT COOKED OR UNCOOKED IT CAN KILL YOUR DOG IF......... DONT LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE edit: if you lot feed your dogs chicken bone then you all crazy. i feel sorry for your dogs
  21. I don't know who told you your dog should be eating chicken bones but whoever it was needs a bit of education on the subject, you NEVER give a dog chicken bones, they splinter and stick in the throat, my mother in law lost her beloved yorkie after he choked on a chicken bone.
  22. NEVER, EVER give a dog cooked bones of any sort. I give my puppies raw chicken necks & wings (and have never had one choke yet in 14 years). I often give my adult dogs raw chicken wings - the calcium from the bones is good for them.
  23. always always UN cooked when cooked they become dry and brittle and can splinter and cause issues
  24. Only raw, and not just the bone the meat too. Raw diets done correctly are far healthier than commercial foods. With anything there is risk, hundreds of dogs choke and die kibble, while there is not one documented case of a raw fed dog choking on its food and dying. Not saying it hasn't or can't happen, only that there are far more documented cases of dogs choking on kibble and dying. Let's not even go into recalls, and poor ingredients that most commercial foods use.
  25. Definitely RAW. But lots of your answers have told you that. If I knew the size and age of your puppy, I could suggest the parts of a chicken your puppy could be fed. But it's pretty safe to say that a medium sized puppy could be allowed to have chicken wings and necks. A bigger puppy could also have chicken backs. I'd stay away from thigh and leg bones until the puppy is really capable of crunching them up.
  26. chicken bones for pupies and dogs are excellent choice of food but make sure you only feed them raw never ever feed them cooked chicken bones we feed all our dogs frames and wings and necks always raw great source of calcium up to 5 times easier to absorb in this way instead of dry food .our dogs are in great condition and the bones will not worry them at all if as i said fed raw
  27. uncooked is better. When they are cooked they splinter and can harm the dogs throat or stomach.
  28. uncooked, raw -- NEVER cooked, they can splinter in her throat and stomach.
  29. I cannot believe the absolute crap that is being written about this post. Millions of dogs live entirely on RAW meat, bones and offal and YES that includes chicken. Raw feeders are just not experiencing the so-called dangers of raw meaty bones. These are just myths and half truths spread by ignoratn people! All that is gained by NOT feeding bones is a dog with periodontal disease which can lead to painful abscesses, organ failure and auto-immune diseases. Why pay a dentist to anaesthetise your dog to clean its teeth when a correct diet with prevent the problem? A lot of people have recommended the feeding of wings and necks - while these provide the nutritional aspect of the bone your dog will not gain the full teeth cleaning aspects of eating a raw meaty bone. Depending on the size of your dog think drumsticks, thighs or quarters instead. The idea is to provide a meal that the dog has to work for! The meat will floss the teeth and massages gums while the bones will scrape the teeth free of plaque and tartar. Please read the attached links as there is heaps of information on feeding your dog a species appropriate raw diet. I would also suggest that the majority of the posters read the MYTHS page!!!! A few people have written about the dangers of choking - I have been researching this for some time and the huge majority of incidents are from toys, rawhide, kibble, socks and cooked or artificial bones - some of the respondents to my questions have even had dogs eat fishing line including hooks!!!. While a dog may very rarely choke on a raw bone it is usually because the meal is too small so is swallowed whole.
  30. NEVER NEVER feed cooked! all cooked bones splinter and have extremely sharp edges that can easily puncture the intestines and be deadly. All RAW bones are fine, even chicken
