Chook Me!

Does nitrogen in car tires help?

I'm in VA where the temperatures can be cold in winter and hot in summer (i.e. wide temperature swings over the year). I drive a sedan (not a high performance sports car) with city and highway driving. Am I going to notice something different over 5 years -- other than the green value caps? Better tire wear? Better gas mileage? Will biker chicks now notice me?

  1. Well essentially nitrogen, holds tire presure better through temperature swings, if you get your oil changed at a jiffy lude and they check the air ever couple months you may see no real diff. but if you fill and forget, yea it may help..
  2. Yes, it would help. But be careful, nitrogen is pretty expensive.
  3. Well, because nitrogen is a bigger molecule, it wont be able to escape from the tire as easily. So, that means you dont need to inflate them as often, which means your tires will stay at a more consistent PSI, and if its the right PSI, it should increase fuel economy by alittle, and should extend the life of the tread. But not by much, but over a 5 year period, that could really add up.
  4. Of course biker chicks will notice you if you put nitrogen in your tires!!! Thats the reason . . . .
