Chook Me!

How many baby chicks(canaries) will survive from the first Clutch?

My canaries have 4 eggs and will hatch in 3-4 days! What is the average of their survival, like how many will surive? The dad and the mom look very caring and I feed them apples, oranges, lettuce, eggfood and so don't worry about that part. I was just wondering what's the average of their survival like 2 out of 4 because I hope some of you own and breed canaries! Thanks!

  1. They should all survive, assuming that all of your eggs are fertile. A clutch of 4 is a perfect size. Watch to make sure that they are all being fed. Have some Kaytee exact babyfood on hand, just in case the runt gets trampled, and hence, not fed. You also want an eye-dropper, or a syringe. Make sure that all of their crops are equally full, and that they are never empty.
  2. Go careful on the lettuce when it's cool they can get real bad diarrhea from greens. Offer the egg yolk and even crush up the egg shells and microwave them to kill bacteria. Place them ground up and offer them in a small treat cup mixed with the gravel and grit you may give. The female will need the calcium. All 4 should live if you are lucky, give them plenty of privacy and do not check to often if they seem to get nervous or upset with you. After the eggs hatch and they leave the nest , take it away or the female will try to lay again. Canary's start breeding in Feb. every year and since they are young I would only let her have the 1 clutch. Some times the females become unhealthy if they have 2 sets back to back.Good luck with the new baby's, keep them warm and happy
  3. my canary eggs just hatched and two days later they died and i'm not exactly sure why. they were fine when i checked on them earlier. i was told to much of one food and not enough of another can be bad, also don't keep them in the kitchen where there are a lot of strong odors because that can do it to. strong food smells when your cooking and the odor from chemical cleaners will harm them to. i was also told that it is common for them to lose their first clutch due to lack of inexperience on the parents part. if they don't make it take the nest out for a few days up to a week to give her some time to heal. out of five eggs of mine three hatched and all died. i hope you have better luck than i did. and i got all of my advice from a bird expert. also if you have to take the nest out because they die, get rid of everything in the nest and give all new stuff to make a nest out of.
