Chook Me!

There was a birds nest and it just fell down and there are baby chicks that look like they just hatched in it?

I saw the mother this morning after the nest had fallen. What should I do? What do they eat? Any other info would be nice. Thanks. The babies dont have feathers yet and their eyes arent open either. The nest wanst in a tree it was like in a hole thing in a roof and I cant get it back up there.

  1. Put the nest back. The mother will probably still care for them. Don't worry about getting your scent on it because birds can't smell.
  2. they eat mushed up worms and such. and keep them out of direct sunlight. that's my advice to you.
  3. Use gloves to put the nest back in the tree. Don't use your bare hands incase you get your scent on the chicks in which case the mother may then reject them.
  4. If you touched them already you have to take care of them but if you didnt then put the nest back where it was and with the baby birds in it.(only touch them with gloves if possible)
  5. I wouldn't suggest touching the baby chicks. Some birds are very protective and won't care for their young after a human has touched it. If you do move the nest, don't move it with your hands cause the scent will rub off on it. Otherwise, the mother should be able to handle it.
  6. I would say replace the nest into its original place but if the mother has no care for them you should keep them under a light bulb cut up some worms and mimik parenting of that certain bird. Hop that help but if it doesnt take them to your local animal shelter they will know wat to do.
  7. TAKE THEM TO A LOCAL EMERGENCY VET HOSPITAL.....A SIMILAR THING HAPPENED TO ME..I DROPPED THE BABY BIRD OFF AT THE EMERGENCY HOSPITAL AND THEY TOOK CARE OF IT....NO COST TO ME CAUSE ITS NOT MY PET...JUST TAKE THERE...IF THEY ARE HURT....ANYWAYS...
  8. well, im not saying that you have done this but you definitley have to keep them from being close to the ground outside. I would put them back where they were or if you don know at least as high up as you can get them otherwise predators will KILL THEM.
  9. you should first of all make sure that you do NOT touch the nest. if you touch the nest the mom will not take care of the birds and she will just leave them there and they will die. if anything try usinq a pair of gloves and pick up the nest carefully from the bottom and put it back in its place the mom will come back Your Welcome :]
  10. Well, theres probably nothing the mother can do at this point, depending on the bird. Watch for a while, and if it seems they've just been abandoned(aka the mom doesnt do ANYTHING and NEVER comes back,) go bug hunting, keep them in a padded shoebox with a heatlamp over it, or you can turn an electric blanket on low and let them have that. Water them with an eyedropper, and...well, just mimick the mothers actions as closelly as possible. They'll die out there anyway, you may as well give it a shot.
  11. If you cannot put the nest back, take it inside to keep the chicks from predators and the elements. If you know how to knit, knit a small nest. I raised chicks for years this way. I fed them hard-boiled eggs using toothpicks. Smash the egg and place a bit on the tip of the toothpick. Hold the toothpick tight as you feed their small mouths; the toothpick resembles the mother's beak and they will eat from it.
  12. first off dont ever touch them with your hands because the mother will never want them again so you will kill them your self if you do they need there mother best thing to do is put gloves on put them back in there nest and put them in a safe secure place out of the sun back into the tree and watch it all the time but stay away to see if the mother comes back if she does not seem to be taking care of them take back out put them in your house and buy a very small surenge with a very small tip i would try baby food that real small infints drink for the time being then go out and buy some small small earth worms mash them up then feed them to the babys but you need to be really super carefull not to mishandel them i.e holding them to hard or dropping them etc..... then take them to a vet and see what they can tell you to do you need to do all that i told you if they have any hope of a chance to survive this but i would double and tripple check on the infint food tho
  13. You need to feed them yourself. In case the mother abandoned them, if the mother is still around, don't touch it. The mother hunts for them and chew the food so they can eat, they don't have their digestion prepared yet to do it by themselves. Go to a pet store, ask for new-born birds food. It should be something like baby food (that brown food they eat). Keep them warm. If they don't surive, don't blame yourself, it's not as easy as it looks.
  14. its really up to the mother if they survive, whatever you do if you are going to touch the nest dont do it with your bare hands, if the mother does want to still look after them she will pick up on your sent and reject them, dunno if gloves will be the same though. maybe just somehow protect the nest from other animals and give the vet a call.
  15. you could try to put the nest back with a pair of unscented rubber gloves,no powder,if that's impossible and you've already picked it up pit them on some nesting material, call an avian vet that will take in wild birds and save them, there are people out there.or go to a pet store get baby bird formula eye droppers for how many birds you have and hand feed them. with them looking at you put the dropper in from right to left so you don't choke them ,and make sure it's not too hot, they need to eat every couple of hours.
  16. First, it is ok to touch the nest and the babies. Birds have a very poor sense of smell. Your scent will not bother the mother. Place the nest as close as possible to where it was. If the mother bird is watching she WILL come back to her chicks. Calling the ASPCA or a vet really does no good in most cases. They normally to not have the time or resources to care for baby birds. Do a search for wildlife rehabbers in your area.
  17. Just leave it where it is if you can't put it back. The parents will continue to care for them even on the ground. Don't worry if you have touched the babies or the nest despite what others have said birds have a very poor sense of smell and won't abandoned there babies just because you have touched them.
  18. SO much garbage, so little knowledge . Get help and TRY to put the nest back, intact. IF that's not possible, call the local vets and get the name(s) of rehabbers in your area ASAP.
  19. vet and on the way they must be warm and feed them bird food.
