Handling baby chicks on stage?

My school's play this year is the Wizard of Oz. One of the scenes calls for baby chicks in an incubator. Does anyone have any advice for handling them. Should we bring several (only one will be held by Dorthy. The rest can be fake if we need them to be)? Any reccomendations for showing them? Don't worry about their care afterwards, we have a place where they will be sent to live afterwards, far away from the slaughter.

  1. Definitely use fake ones. If absolutely necessary have one be real, but fake would probably be best, mainly because they aren't actors themselves and can do what they want. I mean what if one somehow manages to get out during the performance? They may be cute and all but ensuring their cooperation is impossible.
