Why do people think a farm is the best place to dump their cat?
I own a duck farm. We raise poultry. And yet, people are continually dumping off their cats in my yard. I know they are ex-pet cats, because they want to get all friendly. The local shelters don't TAKE cats, because they have too many already (I've tried taking in the god forsaken vermin that people keep dropping off). I've called in about them, and been told I can shoot any animal threatening my livestock (yeah, right. Like I could kill a cat.) So, why do people think a duck farm is the ideal re-location habitat for their stupid cats??? We're up to something like twelve or fifteen, and GOD FORBID if these nasty little animals start breeding. Did I say DUCK FARM? For the person who thinks I'm horrible, These little monsters eat Baby Ducks. And they Aren't feral. They try to love up on me. UGH. As for mice in the barn, I raise Muscovy ducks, and I own a beagle. They both love to hunt and eat mice and rats. We don't want no kitties. As for having them fixed? I know, I know, but I don't have the money to run a farm, raise kids, and get every drop off that people feel like abandoning a full vet work up.

- they like to drop them off on farms because cats like open spaces where they can hunt.
- Hmmm....why would a person just dump an animal is beyond me.
- Mice in the barn! lol
- farms has alot of mice they can eat thats why they say farms
- so it cant follow them home
- Joel G should be awarded BEST ANSWER! YES, YOU SAID DUCK FARM..............But you failed to mention that the kitties are eating baby ducks. That is a pretty HUGE piece of information and changes the story a bit. I like Joel G's answer...I guess the only thing you could do is call animal control....which I hate the thought of, b/c they'll probably be put down...but if they're killing your ducks then they are messing with your paycheck. FIRST OF ALL Cats are not nasty! SECOND OF ALL NO ONE SHOULD BE DUMPING ANIMALS ANYWHERE THIRD OF ALL If you live on a farm what you most likely have feral cats (wild cats) not tame house cats. If you going to be a jerk about kitty cats and view them as nasty animals then you deserve to be overrun by them! It's not like you live on a small lot. You're not very nice! I have relatives that live on a farm and have litters of kittens every summer. You know what they do???? ....They name them all and let them take care of the barn mice and rodents that roam their property.
- Good Lord cats multiply like rabbits. On my parents farm people dump cats there to. I suppose that there is a food supply....and can get into barns for shelter. One rescue organization in our town takes these ferral cats spays/neuters them and releases them back in the wild. Cats are pretty good...even in houses they like to hunt so they can survive...maybe you should contact a congressman about what to do. That is hard because shelters are overflowing EVERYWHERE. Do an internet search to see if any cat only shelters are near you to place them there. Hope this helps!
- Yea, I live in Arkansas and this is bad especially people dropping them off in peoples front yards. Farms around here are mass areas of land with a shop or two on them. It is very easy to dump a bunch of cats, or a few junk home appialces off into a field. Or go screw an abondoned wolfhang climpber butt rapers bitch
- well, you could always trap them (the cats) and line them up along your road with a big sign.(Free cats for the taking. Take them now or they will be coyote food.
- I would round them up, tag them and go get then fixed. Then continue to fix any new cat you see and shoot anyone you catch dropping a cat off for trespassing. If you can't shoot the kitty(what monster could?), shoot the moron who owned it(funny that way I am). At least by fixing the cats you won't end up with tons of feral cats. Put up signs that say trespassers will be shot.
- Because they are idiots who didn't stop to think that the cute cuddly kitten wasn't just a cool plaything to have, but an actual living breathing and feeling creature that shouldn't just be dumped when they can't handle them anymore. I'm not a PETA freak or anything...just don't get an animal if you can't f**king take care of the thing. If there was a law that allowed people to dump shitty pet owners on farms and the owners were allowed to shoot them I swear I would buy a farm tomorrow.
- no help on this one, ppl are thoughtless. I lived on a gingseng farm, ppl used to drop kittens in the barn, even in the mailbox. now that i live in the city i dont get as many dropoffs, but i see the skinny stray cats wandering around. id like to get theyre previous owners and let them liv on the streets and scrounge for food
- Ferral cats are mean, nasty and vicious and even loving pet cats are soon the same when abandoned. You do have the right to protect your livestock from preditors. If you trap them? Good luck and wear heavy leather gloves. Relocating doesen't seem to work, they find their way back. Call animal control when you catch them if you can.
- It must be a terrible problem for you! maybe thay are dumped on farms, because some people think farms mean lots of mice and rats, and that all cats actually like to catch and kill them (Ha!!!) Also maybe they think that in the wide open spaces of a farm, no-one will notice them.......... I also couldn't kill a cat (I LOVE my cats) but maybe you will just have to be tough and do just that. Or maybe you could find someone who could do it for you, humanely of course!! Its so sad that these poor creatures are at the mercy of unscrupulous owners who no longer want them.......
- My friend grew up in the country and almost every other day she'd see a kitty or dog wandering around. People dump their animals off in the country for several reasons. 1. The animal is less likely to get ran over and it is in it's natural habitat (not really..the cat has been domesticated for over 1000 years) 2. Out of site out of mind. Dumping a cat miles away into the country means you don't have to worry about it anymore (but someone else will) I would contact your local government and talk about the problem. Government is slow to react but it's a good start for a long term solution. Right now, check into low cost spay and neutering. It may be hard to stop a bunch of peoples behaviors and a "don't drop cats off here" sign likely won't work. To work against the problem you may have to work with it. See if you are eligible for feral spay/neuter and consider a small colony. Cats are great for keeping mice away and can be useful for your farm. It is kitten season right now and there is an epidemic of kittens. Cats are popping out kittens left and right.
- Cats like to roam large places and kill things, as if they are the king of the jungle (if you know what I mean)... plus it is a safe place for them to run around (no cars!)
- People dump their cats and dogs off at farms because they believe the farmer and family will adopt and care for them. They figure because they have so many animals already one more won't be an inconvenience. They also believe that farmers naturally know how to care for animals so who better to burden. Many feel they are doing the farmer a favor because surely there must be mice in the barn,so these people believe the cat will just survive on mice. They feel the dog will chase off varmints. So in the end they decide hey what better place for an animal then a farm.Well at 85 dollars a pop to spade a female cat and 45 to neuter a male.It is much cheaper to just shoot it.Cats are adorable right till they pee all over the hay as well as crap in it.Those dogs which have never seen a chicken instinctively chase and kill them.Oh yes what a favor. Why do they do this because they believe it is the best place for their unwanted pet. They envision the animal living a free life of fun and leisure. That is why they dump them at farms because they are to cheap to take care of the cost of getting rid of it the right way.Or lack the stones to put it down. Then lets add the feed cost for these so called mousers 14 dollars for 40 lbs of cat food.20 cats will eat this in no time at all.Why feed them you ask?????It is simple because all you need is some animal loving idiot to come by see a skinny cat and you have every humane society idiot and their counter parts wanting to charge you for neglect.Because kitty isn't nice and fat.For those who drop your cats and dogs at farms know this most farmers will simply shoot it.Also you should know it sure as hell isn't fun either. So take care of your own problems instead of passing them on.Saying it isn't my cat or dog is not a good enough excuse for the humane society peoples and those who enforce such laws. They will also ask why did you not just bring the animal to a shelter?????Because shelters here charge 35 dollars to take in an animal. That my friends is what you call the passing of the buck.
- The idiots probably think you raise cows - milk for the cats. I witness the same thing every week at my mom's. And she, god bless her, will take them in and fix them, get vaccination shots and feed them. She has a heat lamp in the winter out in the shed for them. I wish people would stop thinking of themselves when they get a pet. Shoot the owners.
- Because they're total idiots. I can't say much more than that, and what I could say has already been said by the likes of Joel G. However, there are often free / very low cost spay/neuter programs run by charities. Try speaking to the Humane society. You could also consider putting signs up around your farm saying "any pets dumped here will be shot on sight" even though I know you wouldn't carry out that threat.
