Chook Me!

I have seen differences in dog food preference and took some advice and switched from my brand to Canadae.?

Canadae was not for my dog. She got indigestion and very dry flaky skin. The sales rep said its rare that a dog gets indigestion but it has happened and the dry skin happens more often. Here is what I feed my dog and she seems to be doing well on it. If anyone knows something about these ingredients please let me know as I don't know of a site that deciphers the ingredients. Thanks so much you guys are real knowledgeable. Lamb meal, Ground brown rice, oatmeal, ground grain sorghum, poultry fat (preserved with natural mixed tocopherols, cittric acid and ascorbyl palmitate- a vitamin c ester),ground flax seeds, natural flavors, linseed meal, dried beet pulp, potassium chloride, dried kelp, choline chloride,DL-methionine, yucca schidigera extract, natural antioxidants, vitamin supplements (E,A,B2,B12,D3), niacin, calcium ascorbate, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, inositol, menadione sodium bisulfite complex ( source of vitamin K activity), folic acid biotin, zinc proteinate, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, manganous proteinate, manganous oxide, cobalt proteinate, potassium iodide, sodium selenite, rosemary extract. I fed her Canadae for a little over a month. I found my brand in the 3 star category. I didn't know about the vit K stuff. I will heed this. Man, This dog eats better than we do and it seems it is still not the best. Thank You all for the info. Great stuff, great sites. My dog may not be getting top of the line food but we love her so much. She is our pride and joy. Here is her pic.http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa174/lab_rat15/XL025901.jpg

  1. The first ingredient is meat meal, which is good. However that and chicken fat are the only meat in the food, which means it's likely the food is more grain that meat, which is not good. How long was your dog on Canidae? It can take a month or two to really see full benefits from a new food. But, not all foods work for all dogs, no matter how good or bad the brand is. It doesn't seem like the food you're feeding is the best, but you could also do a lot worse. If you want some other options you can check out dogfoodanalysis.com for some other good brands, and see where your current food ranks AND find out more about the ingredients.
  2. i think it's a great food i was going to use it but they don't sell it near by where i live so i went with evo instead http://www.innovapet.com/products/default.asp?id=1259 and my dog has improved a lot with his weight and coat etc. i also give him a yogurt supplement. does your dog have food allergies? i believe [not sure] that innova or evo is supposed to be good for dogs with food allergies. might want to check into that! ADD: some other foods that i've heard good things about but have no experience with are royal canin, wolf king[?] i think that's what it's called, and solid gold.
  3. I must say that I am really surprised...The Meal being the first ingredient is a great thing, "poultry fat" is not the best it means it is any sort of foul...it also contains grain which is a a known allergen...I hope this works better for you, and like I said, the fact that there is no grain in the Canidae I am surprised at the skin issue...Good luck, make sure you ease him into the new food otherwise indigestion issues can persist!
  4. The sorghum and beet pulp are cheap fillers, but the biggest concern is the use of menadione sodium bisulfite as a Vitamin K. I stopped using Nutro Ultra because of this one ingredient. Here is a link about the additive. This food would probably rate a 3 out of 6 stars on www.dogfoodanalysis.com http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione Here is another link about the use of beet pulp and why it is not good. http://www.botrina.ca/beet_pulp.html
