Chook Me!

I built a chicken coop out of 1x3's how do I attach the chicken wire to it do I just use a staple gun?

  1. A staple gun would be fine.
  2. Sounds good if it is sturdy. Other wise use nails and bend them over after nailing part of it into the wood, spaced apart.
  3. Staple gun would be adequate. Chickens aren't particularly violent so it'll hold them in.
  4. Staples rust fairly fast - if you're in a moist or rainy area, the staples will rust through in a couple of years. I'd do the bent over nail method.
  5. Just some extra advice. Be sure to bury some chicken wire 12" deep. The issue is to keep something from getting to the chickens, not the chickens getting out.
  6. You can purchase hammer driven staples just for this application. They are a tight "U" shape and pointed on the ends of the legs. They penetrate the wood deeper and will hold much better than a staple driven from a gun. They can be purchased by the box at Lowes or HD.
  7. staples do rust fast unless galvanized. zip ties could be used. putting the wire a foot down is a most excellent piece of advice. trying to use a fincing staple as william suggested will most surely split a 1x3.
  8. Buy a box of regular half inch fence staples. Staple gun staples will rust away in less than one season even if they are galvanized.
  9. I used 1/4" lath strips and covered the edge of the wire with them and then screwed the lath to the main uprights. This saved time and is quite solid.
