Chook Me!

How long until I can get the newly hatched chicks from there mother?

Again, my sister's friend's Society Finch is having chicks, how long after they hatch are we allowed to get them from her?

  1. WHEN THEY ARE EATING ON THEIR OWN. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THEM?
  2. well there isn't an actual time you will be able to tell when the time is right by these steps 1- they have grown all their feathers 2- they can fly by themselves 3- they can eat/drink by themselves 4- they don't stay near their mother all the time this will probley take about two months
  3. You could take the chicks at whatever time you wish. But, I would suggest waiting till they are around 6 weeks old. At this time the chicks will have learned most of what they needed to from mom. They will know how to eat, and will have feathers. If you take them before this time you will have to put them in a brooder and make sure that the temperatures are right. And worry about making sure that they are properly cared for. But, if you leave them with the mother all of these things will be handled. Some people people think that the earlier you get the bird the nicer it will be because it will attach to people. This is true, but I watch my chicks run around the yard with there mother and she does teach them. And they seem happier than the birds that I have raised that never had a mother. There is a difference between a bird that was raised by humans and raised by chickens. You may personaly have to find which type you like best. So the choice is up to you and what you wish to do. Hope this helps.
