Chook Me!

I have a question about the Dixie Chicks?

Why did so many people respond so negatively towards Natalie Maines comments regarding how she was ashamed of the president being from texas? I'm writing a essay regarding the whole controversial argument and so far...the only things I have are they were unpatriotic to the country, everybody agred with bush at the time, and they said the comments at the bad time (war on iraq). Do you guys have any other suggestions on why americans reacted the way they did towards them?

Public Comments

  1. The main problem a lot of people had was that they didnt have the nerve to say it here in the states, they went to london and said it. They didn't say they were ashamed to be texans, Natalie said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
  2. They said they were ashamed to be Texans because Bush was from there. Whether or not you agree with the war effort, that was an extremely exaggerated and attention-seeking overgeneralization. A bit like a certain Obama being proud of her country for only the *first* time in her adult life.
  3. it was mainly the country fans that responded negatively. the majority of country fans are very conservative, and the majority are republicans. the pop/rock community had less of a beef with them. it was country radio stations that boycotted them but as far as i have heard no rock/pop stations did.
  4. You ask this all the time.Look at your previous answers from the last times you asked it
  5. Ignorance, plain and simple. At the time she made the statement most Americans were buying into the lies about WMD, Iraqi involvement in 9/11 and how easy we were going to have it in a war with Saddam.
  6. Bad Timing and Logistics. You hear celebrities making political statements (pro and con) about politicians and current events all the time. Unfortunately for the Dixie Chicks, the statements were made on Foreign Soil and in such a manner, that it showed total disrespect for our Country and the President. Like him or not, he was elected by a majority of the American people. Celebrities like Ms. Maines needs to understand that when people buy tickets to see the Dixie Chicks, they are not there to hear her expound on her political views. They are there to hear her sing which is what she should "shut up and do"!!
