Chook Me!

Can I put a whole chicken in a crock pot with foil bunched up at the bottom and the chicken will brown?

I have heard that if you put a whole chicken in a crock pot on top of foil bunched up, it will help the chicken brown. Has anyone ever tried this? Do you have any other suggestions for cooking a whole chicken in a crock pot and getting it to brown?

  1. Brown the chicken first in a pan on the stove. Put a little oil in a skillet and let it get hot. Sear and brown the chicken on all sides. Put the chicken in the crock pot with liquid or just follow your favorite recipe. FYI: This cooking method is called "braising". Pot roast is done the same way.
  2. I never tried that, but if you cook it in a crock pot then take it out and put it under the broiler for a few it will brown.....
  3. Eww.... I wouldn't want it to taste like the foil. I would brown under a broiler first - or if the chicken is in pieces in a pan, then add to the crockpot
  4. Yes, it will. Add no water. And use about 5 alum. balls to lift it up. Canning/preserving rings work well, too.
