Chook Me!

Is a 3 by 4 foot by 3 feet high chicken coop, not including the nest boxes, big enough for 6 laying chickens?

I am going to be building a chicken coop (playhouse style) and was wondering if it will be big enough for 6 chickens. The coop will be 3 feet off the ground and will measure 3 ft long by 4 ft wide and 3 feet high (tall), not including the 2 nest boxes ( on the end). The remainder of the pen will be fenced in and will have 3 ft long by 4 ft wide, and 3 feet high under the coop and in front of the coop ( still one area) will be 5 ft long by 4 ft wide and 6 feet high. ps- if you don't understand the type of design then maybe you have heard of the Rothwell chicken coop. So in conclusion, will a 3 by 4 coop be big enough for 6 chickens????? please answer

  1. I guess it would suffice, but I would want mine to have more room. Especially the "run yard". They really destroy the area they are in, so the more room the better.
  2. THAT IS ONLY BIG ENOUGH FOR 1 HEN -------IT NEEDS TO BE MUCH LARGER
  3. If your chickens were Bantams it MIGHT be big enough. I wouldn't use one that small for regular size birds. I have 11 birds in a henhouse that measures 8ftx12ft with 8ft ceiling. The pen is approx.12ft by 25ft with 4ft fence and though somewhat large for roaming,it allows the chickens the freedom to roam and run. You really could probably get by with your measurements on the coop but they need ALOT more room for running and roaming.
  4. yes, it should be
  5. Not enough room - go big or go home
