I want to get chickens, but I'm not sure if I have the right requirements?

I have wanted to get birds for a while now, but every time there was always the possibility that we don't have the right environment. I was wondering: If I have two dogs, two cats, live on a medium sized plot of land, have neighbors, and live in Florida, should I get ducks or chickens? I know my neighbors wouldn't appreciate roosters very much, but I also know that ducks cost a lot of money. Also, which kind of them should I get? And how can I convince my parents? And any small coop designs that are cheap and easy would be great, too. Thanks!

1. do you live within city limits? most cities wont allow chickens within city limits because they are farm animals.check your zoning codes first and make sure your neighbors don't have an objections against chickens
