how to tell if your chicken egg is fertile?

I have one roster and 18 hens I have a three egg incubator and last week two of them did not hatch. I wanted to know what happened if they were not fertile. And how do you tell?

1. if the rest of them hatched then they probably were fertile but the chick just died in the shell. if you want to find out you can always break open the shell to find out. i know that may sound disgusting but when i was in school thats what we did when we hatched chicks. a few didnt hatch so we opened up the eggs and gave the chicks a funeral outside school.
2. Hold the egg up to a light. Not all eggs a fertile.
