My budgies have hatched their first chicks. The chicks are always on their backs, is that normal or a concern?
This is their first batch of chicks. They have been with 3 other families in 5 years. There are 2 surviving chicks and 1 egg left. I am worried about proper leg and wing development.

- I'm sorry I don't have the answer you're looking for, but I was just "enthralled" that someone actually had bred their budgies. I have had them on and off since 1972, and gave, what now appears, meager attempts at getting any breeding going, and yet that was my "dream" back in the '70's, but, all I've been able to do is buy them from the store or a breeder, and have not been able to have them breed in my custody. Of course, there's been a lot of time between 1972 and now that I haven't had any budgies at all simply due to career life and family life, etc., but, if I could do it now, I'd love to. Again, I apologize for not having the answer you want. I just maybe wanted to say "congratulations" at your success and hope you'll always appreciate your success at what may appear something very simple to you. God Bless you.
- If these are newborn chicks this is normal behavior and they will be fine. You will find chicks in all different positions and might even think they are being hurt but that is not the case. I have raised allot of different kinds of birds from Finches, Budgies to African grays And macalls so I have watched all kinds of babies hatch and survive these positions with no problems.
- Congrats on your new babies ... Newborns spend most of their time on their back while the parents are feeding them 2 - 3 day old should be on their feet ... Feeding the parent calicum and having proper nesting materials in the nest box will help reduce the risk of the babies getting splayed legs ..... There is a great Budgie forum ..... www.forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au hope this helps
- its all right and normal b/c at first when babies hatch from eggs they dont got a posture proper .they will be alright in aweek or a couple of weeks
