Chook Me!

budgies chicks born what should i do so the parents wont kill them?

the first time the chicks got killed by the parents there is a female and a male living together. So what should i do so the chicks won't get killed, they got killed when the had started to grow feathers. Also i do not know how to hand feed them so i can not really take care of them until they grow big enough. so what should i do so they wont die?

  1. If the parents won't take care of them and you can't take care of them, then really the only option is to try and contact rescues in your areas and see if there are any experienced people who can take them and handfeed them. If not, there's not much chance that the babies are going to survive. You need to take steps to stop the breeding behavior so this doesn't happen again and no more babies die needlessly. Remove any nest material or nestbox from the cage. Budgies do not need nests unless they are raising young, and they are less likely to breed without a nest. Cover the cage so that they get equal hours of light and dark in the day. This will make them think winter is coming, and it is a bad time to breed. If the female does lay more eggs, pull them out one or two at a time, freeze them, and then put them back. The budgies will eventually lose interest in brooding the eggs and shouldn't lay more.
  2. One makes you think that had you thought of this before breeding this second clutch you wouldn't be in this situation Again. You could have "addled" the eggs, which means pick up the eggs and shake them. This keeps the eggs from developing and the parents never know the difference. Freezing the eggs, the parents will only lay to replace the eggs that you took from them, making them chronic egg layers. Gee that was brillant. Stop the process of breeding chicks that are needlessly dieing. I see no purpose in what you are doing. Remove the box from this pair and don't breed them again unless you learn how to hand feed the chicks and place them in good homes. But then again this is a whole other task and a whole new expense as well.
