Chook Me!

How do I convince my dad into letting me keep my baby chicks?

My chicken got eaten by an opossum and left behind 12 eggs. With the help of a light bulb, I now have 6 baby chicks and perhaps one more on the way. My dad doesn't want me to keep them, but I just don't want to let them go. Well, he says I can keep a pair, but I've named them all and they're my baby's babies.>.< How do I convince him to let me keep them all?

  1. Think of all the eggs they'll produce that you can sell to your neighbours and friends!
  2. Go online and find instructions for building a simple chicken coop. :) See if you can get your local Boy Scouts to volunteer to come over and help you build it... and see if your dad would be willing to pay for the materials... if you had a proper place to keep them housed, he might be more amenable to keeping them all. The problem will be if you have more than one male chick--you can really only have one rooster in a hen house as if there are more than one they will fight. Show your dad that you are taking respoinsbility for the future care of these little animals... Of course you'll also need to come up with a plan for feeding them... maybe you can raise corn. :) Or maybe you can sell eggs to keep them in chicken feed... Tell him you want to raise them and join a 4H group and exhibit them... You need to demonstrate some intiative and responsibility to your dad.
  3. Congrats on your successful incubation. Do you REALLY want to have 6 chickens? What are you going to do with them all? One or two chickens... ok those are pets, but 7? that's like a small farm operation. :-) Think of it this way: if you had a cat and it had 6 kittens, would you keep them all ? Probably not. You'd give all but one or two away. This is the same thing. Is it sad ? a little. But that's the way it goes.
