Is it normal for chicken to smell odd after the best by date?
Everytime I buy chicken and it has a best by date and I consume it a day or two later, it smells odd. I never got sick but why does it smell odd? It is not expired yet because best by dates are not actual expirations, yet the chicken smells odd and it is slightly yellow. But it is not expired yet! It is not stinking just does not smell quite right. Shouldn't it still be good a day after the best by date?

- Because it is beginning to spoil. So far you have been lucky.
- maybe you should'nt eat expired food!
- definitely do NOT eat it! hope that helped
- yes it is normal, it's rotting flesh. don't corpses stink. you make me sick
- thats not good. maybe your fridge isnt keeping it the right temp.
- if it smells odd dont eat it and switch brands or store
- I wouldn't eat it It sounds like it smells spoiled. If you are not going to eat it before it expires freeze it for later
- Because it is going off. The smell is the clue. The fact that eating this out of date meat has not made you sick is simply a stroke of luck. Surely the best thing is to either freeze it until you need it, or only buy fresh meat when you intend to use it imminently. If it smells off, put it in the bin.
- It is NOT normal for chicken to smell odd in any occasion. Before the best by date means that you better eat it before the date otherwise, it is not best and which means it is starting to go wrong after the best by date. Well, strictly speaking, it is not rotten but it's definitely NOT fresh and going to spoil in a VERY short time or maybe it is starting to...
- your nose will tell if the meat is spoiled or not , sometimes if the chicken is left too long wrapped into plastic it will release gas but this doesn't mean that it is spoiled, rinse it out and cook it .
- if you bey any meat you don't intend to eat in 2 or 3 day after buying it freeze it tell ur ready to eat it it keeps longer and wont smell funny.
- to me most meats/chicken has an odd odor anyway but, yes chicken should stil be just fine a little after the best by date...perhaps its just from what they put in the chicken after its cut up an packaged..the juice/blood that resides in the packaging, etc..smells.... what i do is just rinse the meat or chicken off with cool water before cooking..havent had any issues myself as yet. you can tell by nose if it is really gone bad...but all meat or chicken products do have bit of odor to start with.
