Beer Can Chicken Question?
What beer is good for a beer can chicken bbq? Yeah, any suggestions on the spice rub as well? Thanks in advance!

- all beers have worked for us. are you using the kind of stand that has a holder for a can and the chicken? or is it one that has a cylinder to put the liquid in? we have both but have found that with the cylinder holder we have gotten better flavor because of the combination of liquids we used. my personal favorite was dr.pepper with vanilla vodka. wonderful taste.
- Budweiser in the red can is really good. A tip for best results: drink half the beer from the can first. The reason this makes the chicken so good, is because it steams the meat form the inside. The less volume of beer the quicker it will come to a boil. Be sure to plug the neck of the chicken with a large enough onion or what ever vegetable you like to keep the steam in. As far as a rub..... check your grocery store. There are some good rubs premixed and that makes it easy.
- I think you can use pretty much any kind of beer. I've heard people use ale or regular beer. I agree with the person above who said to use only half the can though for the reasons they stated. A really good rub that I use for chicken and pork is really easy and you probably have all the ingredients in your cabinet. Check out Spicy Rapid Roast Chicken on allrecipes.com. I add garlic and onion powder. I also add a little more heat as well as double the spices depending on the size of the bird. Good luck. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Spicy-Rapid-Roast-Chicken/Detail.aspx
- I will settle for nothing less other than straight DIESEL! Bud works great, but don't use anything that's too spendy or that you really like to drink. The beer adds a really good flavor, but you really can't taste it too much and I don't want you to cry if you use your favorite brew that you've been saving since last Oktoberfest. That being said, don't use swill, either. You want this to be edible, so no Stroh's, no Natural Ice, no Pig's Eye- you get the idea. We must be thinking on the same wave length, 'cause our friends are coming over tonight for a little beer can chicken. Oh... and as far as spice rubs go, I like the Field and Stream Ultimate Wild Game Rub http://www.recipezaar.com/Ultimate-Wild-Game-Rub-241191 It's ok if you can't find the juniper berries- it still tastes really good. Use cherry or apple wood for your smoke. Mesquite doesn't really work that well with beer can chicken for some reason.
- Fosters - if you are not using a stand because the extra wide can is more stable. I make a simple rub of paprika, salt and pepper. (Lemon flavored salt is good) too. Put it under the skin and on top. Rub it under the skin with a bit of olive oil. Cut slits in the skin to let steam out about an inch apart. The oil - the loose skin from putting the spices under and the slits help create crispy skin. Note: My daughters still describe with horror the time I made beer-butt chicken and served it. Good times.
