Chook Me!

Anyone with chicken coop experience? Opinion needed.?

I have an 8x12 shed we are getting ready to convert into a chicken coop. After pouring over designs and ideas, I basically know how I want it laid out, but I walked past an old wooden china hutch we were going to junk and got a funny idea. Along with the normal roost and nest boxes, what if I put the hutch in there? It has 4 stair step type shelves on top, two drawers that could be pulled open and a cabinet beneath that could easily be divided into 2 nest boxes. Do you think the chickens would use this? It just sounds like a fun idea to me. Thanks

  1. yeah i have 12 chickens and they will go into stuff like that
  2. It depends on the chickens. They can be fussy. I would put some soft hay, even alfalfa hay inside the cabinet. You might put a little temporary fence around it so the chicken has to stay there for just a little while, they will then make it home soon. Some chickens don't feel safe on the ground or low, because out in the wild, they could be eaten by a predator. We revised these chicken house plans and our chickens are happy and laying lots of eggs. Here is where my husband found the coolest and easiest how to. Take a look David filmed a short clip showing our chicken coop and then how you can design your own. Hope this helps. http://pinurl.com/to7
