- Hey there, While making a chicken coop you need to make a few key decisions. First of, how many birds do you have? Chicken coops come in different sizes and are specifically designed for certain number of birds. A commonly agreed upon rule here is that you should atleast provide 4 square feet of space per bird MINIMUM! more is always better but this much must be provided for the birds to move around freely. As for materials, you really need to decide what kind of a coop you want. If you have like 2 or 4 birds then a chicken tractor of about 16 to 20 square feet will suffice and all you will need for making one is some lumber and chicken wire. Wheels are also a good addition because you can move a tractor around your backyard. If you have over 6 birds then you'd better settle for a medium or large sized coop offering over 30 to 40 square feet of space. For making one you will need wire net, plywood sheets, poultry feeders, and straw apart from lumber and chicken wire. Also remember since these keep chicken confined inside for longer periods you will need to provide saw dust or sand as chicken like taking sand baths. Another important thing to consider is insulating you coop. You should try to find a good balance between insulation and ventilation. This will also depend upon where you live. Wood, spray-foam, fiberglass and loose fill (cellulose insulation) are a few popular methods of insulation.
