Chook Me!

something beheaded our chickens, skunk?

we have a chicken coop with what started out to be 2 doz. assorted egg layers. they were born in march and about a couple of months ago we came out to 2 beheaded chickens. i saw a large bird in the yard and thought maybe an owl, so we covered the coop with fencing. about a week later, 2 more were beheaded. we set up hav a heart traps and a view cam. we got a picture of a fox, but caught a skunk in the trap. we let it go about 4 miles away. every night for 3 nights we caught skunks and let them go and haven't had any problems since. all of the sites i've been on say a skunk wouldn't behead. any ideas?

  1. my bet is a racoon.
  2. I think it could be a weasel.Skunks don't usually behead, but still, they can do it.I know what gets to my chickens, those damn weasels and other weasel family type animals >:(
  3. Its most likely a fox.
  4. We used to find headless ducklings surrounded by raccoon tracks by our pond when I was growing up.
  5. Definitely NOT a fox. A fox wouldn't have left it there--they're hoarders and would have taken the chicken once they killed it, and likely buried it somewhere on your property to "save for later" Skunk seems rather unlikely, so I'd say your best bet is probably coons.
