Chook Me!

What are some humane ways to rescue chicks?

Links are appreciated I'd love to add chicks to our farm but am looking for a humane manner to do so. I'm a vegetarian. I meant to have some on the farm Most hatcheries are inhumane, thats the problem

  1. main thing.. eat less chicken - for every one you eat.. one is killed at 1 day of age (the males) they are ground up to become pet food - its sad but they are considered pretty much useless, maybe less than 1% are kept for breeding purposes.. you can keep several roosters without hens but they tend to be less friendly.. the hens are what you eat and they are 5 month old babies then anyhow (they would otherwise live 10 or so years) here is a link on pet chickens http://therealowner.com/birds/unusual-pets-chickens/ I honestly dont know why I got a thumbs down... the truth sucks, but it is a fact that the males are killed.. I am not vegetarian.(GOOD FOR YOU!!!). I just suggest people eat LESS chicken... in some areas there are bird auctions and you can buy chickens/chicks/hatching eggs there. (your local livestock feed store might know)... not all breeds of chickens make suitable pets - here is a different link on breeds http://therealowner.com/birds/pet-chickens-which-breeds-are-best/ occassionally you can find a laying operation selling their hens, where I am this happens 2x a year and the birds are 50 cents each. but those are not the friendliest breeds - but at least you are saving them... good luck.. ** If you dont eat the eggs, you can sell them CHEAP this way people buy from you - with your happy hens rather than supporting battery hen farms by buying at grocery store.. I sell mine for $1 a dozen.
