Are roosters annoying when they start to crow?
I live in a neighborhood with houses close by but plenty of room for the chickens. Would it be a good idea to get a rooster or would it annoy the neighbors?

- Only at first then you eventually get used to the crowing and dont even notice it anymore. Some breeds such as wyanndottes dont crow as much as other breeds such as silkies so try and find something that crows a bit less if you are going to get a rooster.
- I personally wouldn’t call it annoying I would call it humorous. When those boys start to crow they sound like they got something stuck up their throat. However, when they get older they can sound very pretty, and can be rather loud. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDPnbZuPVV0 a young rooster, and an older rooster for comparison. Since you live in a neighborhood, I would first check to see if you could keep chickens where you live. Then I would ask my neighbors first how they felt about a rooster/hens. And don’t hide the facts from them either, my boys crow at four in the morning, and can be heard across the boulevard, the row of houses, and the creak, to the houses behind it. Thankfully, due to the road, and distance it isn’t loud enough to wake anyone, so no one cares. But, they can most assuredly be heard. But, I see no reason why your neighbors would be against hens. They are less noisy, and more productive then dogs/cats. They also will be clean if well cared for. I would just make sure that they stay in your yard. And above poster is correct, some breeds don’t crow as loud. Stay away from the RIR and Easter Eggers; boy can those buggers make some noise. My Brahma, Silkie, and Game fowl are a lot more quite. Also, you have to be careful with roosters, some can get very aggressive. And if you live in a neighbor hood, you can't have him attacking anyone. And keep in mind that lighter breeds, can fly better, so don't rely on an uncovered fence to keep them in. And if you let them free range, you are going to have to deal with the neighborhood cats, and dogs.
