- Building a chicken coop is not that easy, and it will be in your best interest to get some detailed plans, trust me. However, here are some things that you need to consider: 1. Size and placement. It must be the proper size for the number of chickens you are taking care of, because this will ensure survival of your chickens and eggs. 2. Security and protection from predators. This is vital. One important thing to remember is to bury your mesh wire deep enough where predators such as a fox or coyote cannot break in. When you build a chicken coop this is an aspect you do not want to overlook. 3. Make sure you use the right materials. You need to decide what materials will be best, as far as price and durability. - wood and nails
- use 2x4's and rip them down the center, use these to make a frame 2 walls and a top but no bottom ,also get some chicken wire after you build the frame ,but before you assemble it put the wire on ,it will be a lot easier that way. i also suggest a pitched roof so water will run off and not stand and make a door large enough to get a wheel barrow through ,believe me you don't want to carry all that bedding in and out . no floor but you might need to run a treated framing piece from wall to wall on the ground to keep the walls from moving apart. use treated lumber on anything that touches the ground ,but not the sides or top. you can leave it open to the weather but cover three sides to keep the wind out and a place to perch off the ground. you can open it up in the summer ,it will smell much better if it can breathe . you can make doors in 1 or both ends ,but remember that wheel barrow .
