Chook Me!

What can baby chicks learn in just a few weeks;how do you train them?

I have a baby chick and want to know what it can learn, what it has learned already, and how I am supposed to train it. He/she really likes me and it thinks I'm it's mother.

  2. Baby chicks are kinda like baby sharks, they come stocked from the egg knowing how to be self sufficent. They instictually know how to do the most basic tasks, this is why hatcheries send them out as day olds and not week olds! More then likely your chick sees you as her or his companion/mom because they are flock animals and like to be in groups. Usually a single chick is quite loney and gets to be very loud because he or she is looking for more chicks to keep comapny with. What your chick has "learned" depends on it's age. They instinctually know how to find food, bathe, preen, roost, and drink. They are actually very smart. Once your chick is feathered, then he or she is a little more sturdy. Meal worms are the best training tool to use on a chicken. My girls got to know what the meal worm container looked like and they would do the silliest things to get to the worms. I had a hen who was one of our show chickens. Muffie was her name and she was one of our showmanship chickens and she was also the kids favorite for the chicken races. The chickens would race on a plank, and the first one across the finish line would win. They raced in 5 heats. She won them all. Her handler would get a mealworm and stand at the fininsh line. She'd run down and get the worm. She eventually got band from racing and had to retire. *sigh* So, anyway, your chicken can learn any number of tricks with patience, practice, love and meal worms. Hope this helps!
