What is with the tradition of having chicken after going to church on Sunday?
I am a big country music fan and in more than one song I have heard the phrase "sunday chicken after church." I'm just wondering what its significance is?

- Chickens were common in the day. They were almost portable food. It was easy for a person to kill a chicken than it was to kill a cow.
- Because the sheep have already been fleeced in church . . .
- It's to keep the chicken from crossing the road to get to the other side.
- It's relatively cheap, can be stretched to feed a lot of people, and is quick to fix after a long service. Women could put on a pot of chicken stew before church and let it simmer while they were gone, or else they could fry up some chicken fairly quickly after the service was over. Now you've made me hungry, thinking about my grandmothers and the Sunday dinners they used to fix!
- In many cultures including rural America, Chicken is the first choice to serve to guests. Traditionally church people invite guests for dinner after church, so chicken became tradition.
