how to stop neighbors dog!?
asking again how do i fix this problem with neighbors pets? What to do about neighbors animals? they have come into our yard, tore up our fence and tore up the other fence to the chicken coop and killed 12 of our 18 chickens which cost us about 10.00 each PLUS the eggs we sell. what can i do to get rid of these animals! weve told them to keep there animals out of our yard, weve called the authorities they told us that if the animals are on our property we have the right to shoot them. can you think of a less lethal way? 6 hours ago - 1 week left to answer. Additional Details we had a perfectly fine fence brand new before that tank of a lab tore it up ADD: someone had the NERVE to say this is my fault, we bought and have replaced the fence three different times! we have the heavey duty stuff the dog gets out there at night and pulls and gnaws at it until he gets in! we caught him on the survelance camera quote: "Part of it is your fault but also the owner of the animals who keep getting into your yard. " lucky: how in the Hell is this my fault? we have two fences one for the house and yard and another fence that is around and above the chicken coop . there dog and cat are tearing apart new fences! we called the police , humane society and animal control and they say that if they dont see the dogs doing it themselves they only have our word even though we have pictures of those animals in the act. THE PURPOSE OF ASKING THIS QUESTION IS SO I CAN AVOID HAVING TO SHOOT AT THE ANIMALS. i am an animal lover i dont want to shoot them despite the authorities recomendation to do so. god knows that mutt probably deserves it but i wont be the one to do it no dodger doesnt bite or rather hasnt yet, he chases people that walk by his house and ours! he will get close like he might bite then runs off a ways and when you turn your back on him he will rush forward and do the same again. no biting yet we dont use an electric fence because of our own dog he likes to visit the chicks and we dont want him shocked tryign to sniff them through the fence not to mention my little nieces and nephews like to run out there and play with the birdies i dont want them shocked

- does the dog bite humans?? maybe you can trap it and take it to the no kill shelter..thats all i can think of besides shooting it ..sounds terrible but you do have that right if its killing chickens..i know i couldnt do it neither ..id try talking to them one more time then maybe do what you have to.. never thought of the paintballs maybe try that hope it helps.. we have hot wire around our horse fence and doesnt cost alot to put up maybe try that ..it wont kill them but will shock the bee jesus out of them b has a great answer
- Everyone I know in your situation shoots the dog. I understand your hesitation, but if the cops refuse to have anything done, I suppose it is the only solution.
- Put an electric fence up on the outside of your yard where the animals are getting in. If this doesn't stop them...good luck with your aim. Maybe even just try shooting them with paintballs or bb's before you actually kill them. Maybe it will scare them enough that they'll stay away?
- Just shoot them with a bb gun it won't hurt them just stings a little after 3 or 4 times they'll get the picture.
- also spray them with a hose and get trained guard dogs of your own.
- B has a good idea. Maybe you could electrify the existing outer fence instead of buying an electric fence. Nothing that will kill them, just enough to scare them and deter them.
- I'd fire up a pressure washer from Home Depot with 3500 psi. The noise will drown out the dogs as they yelp from being skidded fifty feet on their side. The red nozzle won't kill, but you can write your name in the dog's butt, as they get a bath and have their teeth cleaned.
- What kind of fence are you putting up? consider chain link or electric or a combo, I wouldn't skimp on height either...
- It sounds as if the problem is as much with the neighbors as with the dogs. If the neighbors will not take responsibility, you could try things to cost them money. For example, depending on the exact situation & laws in your area: Fences are usually a joint responsibility - any dividing fence they should presumably pay half the cost of replacing. Are you able to catch or confine the dogs on your property if they get onto it? Even if you cannot prove the full damage they cause, most pounds will charge the owner to release the dogs, sometimes with additional fines for letting them stray. If the owners are really reluctant, perhaps you could shoot the dogs with stink bombs - presumably they spend most of their time with them & this might make them think a little!
- You need an all-the-time deterrent that is stronger than a physical barrier. My solution was a large, aggressive gander (male goose) that would charge anything in the back yard - of course, I had to get really good at getting by him to care for my stock, but the neighborhood dogs, raccoons, and mink all vanished when he showed up. Unless the dog is very vicious, a few rounds of gander treatment should scare him away - and the noise the gander makes will also make sure that you are plenty awake before the dog even gets to the fence. Ganders attack by charging, get a grip with their beaks (ouch!) and then beating with their wings - it feels like a few enthusiastic four-year-olds are having at your shins with baseball bats - but the damage is usually short-term. Make sure to use welded hog wire in addition to chicken wire or hardware cloth, bury it at least 12" and make it at least 4' high. I like the electric fencing idea as well - one wire a foot from the ground and another at the top of the fence should do it. Barbed wire is another option, but less predictable in the damage and deterrent that it would be. If you have photos/video of the dog attacking, I might try small claims court for the value of the birds. If none of this works, you will need to shoot the dog. Give him a good bird shot in the hind parts before taking a head shot or shooting to kill, but this dog is out of control and the brutal deaths of so many animals because of his out of control behavior and unwilling to confine him owners mean it is the kindest thing an animal lover can do - how many chickens will he painfully maul to death if he isn't stopped by a single, virtually painless bullet to the head/heart? Just make sure you aim true.
- There are no bad animals, only bad owners, so shoot the owners, not the pets! Ok, seriously! You have their animals on video damaging YOUR property? You need to CALMLY talk to your neighbor again. Tell them you want to be neighbors and get along and what can YOU do to help them keep their animal from damaging YOUR property, so that you don't have to take YOUR VIDEO of THEIR DOG to small claims court for replacement of your chickens and repair to damage of their property. No matter what they say, remain calm. If you can't work out a deal between yourself and them, then take them to court. Also, the Prosecutor's office in your county should have some sort of dispute arbitration. This allows you to let your neighbors know you are serious without having to pay for the small claims court. (Which they have to refund to you after you sue them and win. It will only cost between $75 and $150 to file - it's not a huge amount.) By the way, since you are an animal lover, when you have your nice, calm conversation with your neighbor, try to get a feel for how they plan to handle the dog. Their solution may be to just dump it at the pound. I like the idea of taking the dog to a no-kill shelter. You usually have to call in advance and make arrangements. I say this, because bad pet owners usually don't care about their pets enough to consider what happens to them. If you really care, you'll take the animal's welfare into consideration. I believe you will, since you have taken the time to ask this question. The IDEAL situation is for the pets to be cared for, healthy and 'containerized' on their property in a loving home, and for you to maintain the sanctity of your fence and chicken coop. I wish you luck.
- Make the owners pay for the destroyed chickens, and the damage. Maybe they will think about restraining their animals if they have to pay for the damage they do.
