- I ordered 10 female chicks a few years ago in the spring. They came to me safe, healthy, and I was super pleased because they packed in a few extra males for free as "warmers". A good experience, all of my chicks were vigorous and healthy!
- I was impressed with my order of fifty-five chicks the other year. All chicks arrived safe and sound (except for one silkie). Ideal had even packaged the chicks for the weather, by taping up the holes in the box, except for two for breathing. As soon as I put the chicks in the brooder they were fine, and they grew into beautiful, healthy, and friendly birds. This all may not seem like much above, but I will tell you what happened several years ago with another hatchery (McMurry to be exact). The birds were shipped through a terrible cold spell. McMurry crammed in many warmer chicks, which was very kind, but they didn’t even try to tape up their holed box. I ordered 25 pullets, ended up with over fifty chicks, and only twenty hens survived. I took four days off of school to nurse them, but they just kept dying one by one. After, the terrible death spell was over the chicks grew up and made very sweet pets, however illness seemed to follow them constantly, I had to put down seven of the hens due to health issues. Do understand that when one orders from a hatchery, death can occur, and it is most often not the hatcheries fault, it is the weather and shipping. I also expect several chicks to die before they reach adulthood, either by sickness, or accidents. Also, do not expect showing or breeding quality birds from a hatchery, are you will most likely be disappointed. One of my light Brahmas from Ideal, is so far from Columbian pattern, that we call her a lark brahma, as it appears that there is dark Brahma in her as well. Good luck, and happy ordering. (I have thirty chicks coming this April from them, Dark Brahmas, and Easter Eggers) Jamie/Rhode Runner
