Chook Me!

Is there dog food out there or a chicken + rice recipe that will keep him from getting sick everytime he eats?

My dog is a very picky eater. He used to eat dry food but has recently decided that he will not eat it any more. He will only eat enough to keep himself alive. We tried giving him wet food and he loves it but he gets diarrhea every time. The vet keeps prescribing him a medication that gives him a temporary fix but as soon as he finishes his prescription the same problem occurs all over again. I have tried multiple different kinds of food and have eased him into each one so it does not hurt his stomach but nothing seems to work. It is being recomended to switch him to a chicken, rice, and vegetable diet. Has anyone experienced a situation like this?

  1. Sound like a case of owner not being firm enough in feeding and labeling a dog with human issues. No healthy dog will starve itself if food is available - if the dog was not eating the first kibble then you should have stuck with that kibble and waited it out. He would have eaten. Dogs are NOT picky unless the food makes them ill or they are unable to eat it (or they are ill.) THey do not "choose" to just not eat (unless they know the human will give in and feed them stuff they shouldn't have.) The reason he is having the runs NOW is because of the wet food. It's mainly water and sugar, which causes mushy poop. Certainly isn't giving him the proper nutrients, which could also contribute. Switch him onto a GOOD QUALITY KIBBLE - no corn, no by-products, named meat meals. Put it down twice a day for 20 minutes. Eventually the dog WILL eat. Changing food often, even if you "ease him into it",can also cause stomach upset. STICK with a food. Stop changing it. Period. A diet of just chicken, rice , and veggies won't do it. Chicken is only one source of protien and meat. Rice is mainly a filler and binding agent. Veggies cannot be digested easily unless pureed. If you don't want to feed kibble, try feeding raw: http://www.rawfeddogs.net/ http://rawfed.com/myths/
  2. YES!!!!!!! I had an Irish Setter. I got the situation completely cleared up by only feeding her one kind of food, absolutely NOTHING ELSE. For the rest of her life she never had another problem.
