- Personally, I think the ideal diet consists of all of that. The fact that salt, sugar, and red meat are all listed as "a little" is reasonable--everything in moderation. In fact, if people never ate ANY salt or sugar, their bodies would suffer from hypoglycemia and sodium deficiency, and red meat is a very rich source of iron. Too much of anything is a bad idea, but an "ideal" diet is really relative to each individual. A marathon runner's ideal diet is completely different from a pregnant woman's ideal diet. Someone who is 500lbs would have a very different ideal caloric intake than someone who is fit and 130lbs. You can't categorize an ideal diet on a single level--it's different for everyone.
