Can a chicken coop and run stand on bark chippings?

I am thinking of buying chickens and our garden has been laid with bark chippings as we have rabbits and guinea pigs. Would chickens be able to live on the bark chippings in a chicken coop and run? If there is any advice you can give about different ground surfaces chickens can live on that would be great. Jac

  1. You can on farmville :D
  2. Bark chippings are not ideal I'm afraid. It would be Ok site the coop on bark chippings as long as the hens have access to a grassy pen with trees for shade etc. Chickens need to eat grass and love making dust baths and scratting abouy in soil for worms and insects. Keeping them on grass is best. Bark chippings get soiled very quickly from their droppings (poop) and believe me chickens poop a lot. The earth absorbs the poop when it rains if you keep them on grass. You would have to change the bark chippings quite often to prevent build up of disease which would prove expensive.
