Are obese people their own fault? Why do we feel sorry for them or offer them handouts?
Let me tell you something, all throughout high school I was 6'1" tall and weighed only 120 lbs. It was humilating, four years of non-athleticism, depression, ostracism and datelessness, but as I got older, my fast metabolism slowed down, at one point I ballooned up to 172 lbs. b/c of an unhealthy diet and a sedentary way of life. However, I no longer eat meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, fried food, alcohol, high fructose corn syrup, cola....I stick to fruit juices, water, beans, rice, pasta, fruits, vegetables, soy....and as a result I am at an ideal weight. Why do people who stuff their faces with fast food and Cola and fried food and high fructose corn syrup lamen their weight gain? Yes, some people have problems with their metabolism (I have been there), but seriously isn't the obesity epidemic really just a result of poor living and bad choices and the fault of those who pursue this reckless way of life instead of being disciplined? I have self discipline when it comes to food, plus I walk home from work which takes at least 40 minutes, so why should I feel sorry for people who don't? The 172 lbs. was pure fat, abdominal fat, therefore it was unhealthy. I really was only 120 lbs. in high school. There are people that underweight. If it had been under 110 lbs. that would have required medical intervention. What I am saying is that I follow a strict diet as I do not wish to be a burden on our healthcare system as that is selfish.

- Well when I was young in the 1960s they usually had a illness. Few fatty's then. But now let them feed themselves without food stamps is my thoughts.
- 172 lbs is not overweight for 6' 1"
- Nobody is looking for your sympathy or handouts, and nobody is interested in what you eat.
- Handouts???? What? My dad's fat and he doesn't get handouts. I don't feel bad for my obese family members, but I am concerned since many of them have had to take trips to the hospital.
- I doubt you were 6'1 120lbs you'd be in the hospital. I'm 6'2 175lbs and rather skinny. I wear 29-30 size jeans (some of the smallest they make for men). If you were 6'1 and 50lbs less you'd be having serious health problems. I generally think obese people are fat by their own doing. I might not feel this way. BUT America seems to be the only Country in the world with this problem. Even when compared to other first world countries. If it was medical it would be global issue not just isolated to America. Some of my friends who are over weight are over weight because they eat more then they should and do little to NO exercise.
- Michael Moore is really enraged with Michelle Obama for targeting people like him. He feels he is a victim of her vicious anti-blubber campaign!
- I hate to tell you this...but HFCS is simply SUGAR... If you substitute table sugar back into the ingredient instead of HFCS, you STILL end up with unhealthy foods...so blaming them as the "bogeyman" is a bit disingenuous...
- Yes, they are responsible for their own health. But it is their life. If they want to be unhealthy, they can. But maybe you should feel sorry for them. After all, you're just so self-disciplined and perfect now. Isn't it sad that not everyone can be as great as you are? :/
